The executive of IMAX theaters may put The Felloship of the Ring on Imax theaters. With the recent success of The Attack of the Clones in IMAX i bet The Fellowship of the Ring might have a chance. go to
www.countingdown.com/movies/twotowers and go to the News section for details.

That would be awesome if they did that. Only I hope they do the EE edition and not the normal one. There is a good chance they'll do that, if it's IMAX.
Gets all giddy
IMAX movies are limited to 2 hours. There's almost no way they'd edit FOTR down to that time limit (as was done with AOTC) so I imagine there'd be a long intermission to change the reels (intermission is good!).

I'd deffinitely want an intermission if it was the EE. :)

I watched FOTR twice on IMAX a few months ago. The nearest IMAX theater to me (located in Perth, Western Australia, and unfortunately now closed) was screening quite a few 35mm films in addition to their proper IMAX stuff.
The picture quality wasn't particularly great... 35mm films just aren't meant to be blown up to that size, and FOTR being a particularly grainy film to begin with, it wasn't a pretty sight. :) But the eyes adjusted, and the sheer size made the film fun to watch.
If the studio were going to do an official IMAX release of LOTR, though, it's more than likely that they'd master true IMAX prints. Given that the films were shot on 35mm originally, they still wouldn't look as good as films shot with actual IMAX cameras, but I'm sure it would look better than simply projecting a 35mm print onto a massive screen.

Supposedly the new word is that RotK will premiere on Imax screens.
As for FotR, it would have to be remastered, obviously. I too saw it on IMAX, and it did look bad. You can't screen prints like that on that sort of screen.

I just saw AOTC in IMAX two days ago. It was great. You really get more involved in it. Twas great to at least see Christopher Lee in his alter-ego as Dooku in IMAX. One bad thing though is the actors better have perfect complexions if they know they will be in IMAX. It magnifies every little flaw.
I am hoping against hope they would do FOTR -
Here is how I would edit it down:
Cut the prologue by 1/3.
Cut the pause out when Frodo and Gandalf meet and before they laugh heartily.
Cut the first half of the cornfield scene with Frodo and Sam.
Cut the worms and spider scene out from under the tree.
Cut the pillows stabbing scene in Bree in 1/2.
Cut out 1/2 the Anduin river trip. (NOT the Argonath part!)
Cut 1/3 off the Arwen / horse chase.
Cut 3/4 of the Cave Troll fight, since it wasn't even in the book.
Cut out 1/2 of the time that Frodo 'thinks' at the boats before leaving.
And cut in half any other scenes that drag longer than absolutely necessary. (But avoid clipping much from Moria other than CT scene.)
I think it could be done without changing the story much.
Or they could just have an intermission and change reels...

They'd have to charge $20 instead of just $10, I think. Plus, if they do all three movies in IMAX, I think 6 hours would be plenty.

I heard that "Lawrence of Arabia" will be put on the IMAX screen sometime too. I would love to see that again.
Ahem, back to topic...

I've never been to an IMAX, but if they had two screens they could put one half on one screen, and the second half on another screen. Then at the end of the first half, everyone files out to the second screen. (again I've never been to an IMAX film, so I don't know if they have two screens or not).

I've never heard of a theatre having more then one IMAX screen. We're talking about a system whos cost is in the millions. To even have one such screen is incredible.
