Hmm...Not to be nit-picky or anything....but....

Didn't Gimli pride himself that a dwarf could keep up with the rest of them regardless of his size? They have Gimli about 50 feet behind the other two huffing and puffing....

It's starting already. Let the PJ bashing begin! :)

I highly doubt that it ever said anything in the book about Gimli always being right at the front with Aragorn and Legolas. For crying out loud his legs are half as long as the other two. Aragorn is a ranger and can run quicker than most men and Legolas is an elf. Only thing that could run faster than him in a race would be a horse or something with wings.

My recollection is that Gimli talked big but was kind of a straggler when it came down to it. I'll have to re-read the appropriate passages...

Gimli prided himself on not losing pace. he was just as swift as the others and could run for just as long. *grin*

Hey, theonering.net has just posted two more clips from the two towers. The quality isn't that terrific, but hey you take what you can get.

I hate to defend something I haven't seen, but may I quote from the book:

And yet even I, Dwarf of many journeys, and not the least hardy of my folk, cannot run all the way to Isengard without any pause.

Nobody else was complaining, except Gimili. I think there might even be a direct line saying Gimili was running behind them both. As Ariana points out, this wouldn't be too surprising, considering his height and stature.

Your quote from the book:

doesn't say that probably none of the three could run to Isengard without pause. Gimli was the only one who said it. That doesn't mean that when they were running and had the stamina, that Gimli couldn't keep up with them. Who's to say that the dwarfs were not extremely quick on their feet and could move their little legs faster?

I re-read the appropriate sections too. There's no actual evidence of Gimli being the major straggler of the group (as this clip from the movie suggests). Legolas was by far the most tireless. Gimli and Aragorn were just about even it seemed, but Gimli was the one who did the most complaining - and he was always the first one all over the idea of stopping and resting.

I wonder if they'll explain the aspect of how Saruman's sorcery was slowing and tiring the hunters while aiding the speed of the Orcs? Probably not.

Come again? I've never heard of that. Do you have quotes suggesting this?

indeed:
'To hope, maybe, but not to toil,' said Aragorn. 'We shall not turn back here. Yet I am weary.' He gazed back along the way that they had come towards the night gathering in the East. 'There is something strange at work in this land. I distrust the silence. I distrust even the pale Moon. The stars are faint; and I am weary as I have seldom been before, weary as no Ranger should be with a clear trail to follow. There is some will that lends speed to our foes and sets an unseen barrier before us: a weariness that is in the heart more than in the limb.'
'Truly!' said Legolas. 'That I have known since first we came down from the Emyn Muil. For the will is not behind us but before us.' He pointed away over the land of Rohan into the darkling West under the sickle moon. 'Saruman!' muttered Aragorn. 'But he shall not turn us back! Halt we must once more; for, see! even the Moon is falling into gathering cloud. But north lies our road between down and fen when day returns.'

True enough, but I think the filmmakers are trying to suggest that Gimli is the straggler of the group.

Well, Gimli was already a considerable distance behind Aragorn at the beginning of the scene, (then he stopped to talk, so Aragorn could have gotten further ahead), so if they're both running at relatively the same pace during those sweeping aerial shots, then Gimli shouldn't really be gaining on Aragorn anyway.

Actually, the first thing that struck me when I watched the scene was that Legolas caught up to Aragorn pretty damn quickly, which I thought was fitting seeing as how elves are light on their feet and all that good stuff.

I think it's really quite pointless to try and analyse the way a character is being portrayed from watching one clip from the movie which is about 60 seconds long.

Theonering.net has just provided a link to a new trailer. It doesn't have any new shots but it has a lot of the major stuff packed all into one trailer. Oh, and there is something that is a tiny bit new. In the last major trailer released by New Line Cinema there is a shot of Arwen with a grey veil over her face and she is apparently mourning. This shot has been discussed and speculated about and it is believed that that is a shot of a jump into the future with Arwen grieving over the death of Aragorn. This is definately more apparent as the shot in the new trailer is expanded. In the new trailer you can see that not only is Arwen wearing a grey veil, she is also wearing a golden crown. So apparently in that scene she is queen of Gondor.
