View Full Version : What is your favorite quote from the LOTR movie?
FallenOne

Feel free to post your favorite quote from the LOTR movie, so that I can get an idea of what type of person you are.
I'll go first. My favorite quote is:
> In a dream,
> I saw the eastern sky grow dark,
> but in the West, a pale light lingered.
> A voice was crying:
> "Your doom is near at hand.
> Isildur's Bane is found."
> Isildur's Bane...
(Boromir - EE DVD #1: CH 27 "The Council of Elrond")
Thank you for your time...
Later.

Well, I must admit that this is going to be very hard. I can hardly pick a favorite quote because I have so many and it depends on what mood I am in. Ok, I am going to post three.
"Farewell, Frodo Baggins. I give you
the light of Erendil, our most beloved star.
May it be a light to you in dark places, when
all other lights go out." - Galadriel in The Theatrical Edition
"I would have followed you,
my brother, my captain, my king." - Boromir to Aragorn in TTE
"They're going to the harbor beyond
the White Towers, to the Grey Havens.
They're leaving Middle Earth.
Never to return.
I don't know why, but somehow it makes me sad."
-Frodo and Sam concerning the elves leaving Middle Earth

I would rather share one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone. I choose a mortal life. It is mine to give, like my heart.

Boromir:It is long since we had any hope. My father is a noble man, but his rule is failing. Our people lose faith. He looks to me to make things right and I would do it. I would see the glory of Gondor restored.
Have you ever seen it, Aragorn? The White Tower of Ecthelion, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, it's banners caught high in the morning breeze. Have you ever been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?
Aragorn: I have seen the White City, long ago.
Boromir: One day, our paths will lead us there and the tower guard will take up the call: The Lords of Gondor have returned!
----------------------
Boromir: Leave it. It is over. The world of men will fall and all will come to darkness, and my city to ruin.
Aragorn: I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you, I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail.
Boromir: Our people. Our people.
I would have followed you my brother.
My Captain. My King.
Aragorn: Be at peace, son of Gondor.

I am most touched by the Elves. These are my favourite:
"Farewell, Frodo Baggins. I give you the light of Erendil, our most beloved star. May it be a light to you in dark places, when
all other lights go out."
I would rather share one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone. I choose a mortal life. It is mine to give, like my heart.
I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. -Frodo standing by the banks of the Great River, and hearing Gandalf's voice.

Leave it.
Aragorn: I do not know what strength is in my blood.
Be at peace.
It's an excellent scene, no doubt of that, and MOST of it sounds genuine, but I can't place it to the book, except of course the very end. Is it genuine, and if so where does it appear?
The few words that don't sound genuine:
Do trumpets actually RING?
Isn't there something mildly comical about B's question? It reminds me of some Victorian poetry, like "come into the garden Maud".
Leave what?
Does blood have strength in it? Isn't it rather hearts that are usually considered to contain strength?
But mercifully we are left with that great final genuine phrase; it says it all.

Joxy, this thread is for people who want to post their favorite quotes, not a place to provide you with things to bash. So if you don't have quote, don't post.
- Ariana
PS. And yes, the phrase "ringing of silver trumpets" is accurate. I have heard that terminology used other places.

I was asking for information, not bashing - quite the opposite; I said it's an excellent scene.
If you haven't got the information, no problem.
As I said, do trumpets "ring"? If so, where? in Tolkien?

Hey thanks TF; that's amazing; how did you find it?
It's about ancient times when Moria was alive with dwarves; maybe trumpets did ring then, though I think it's more likely that Tolkien was having an off-day and couldn't think of a better rhyme for "rang"!
I wonder whether PJ knew the poem when he invented that odd line for Boromir.

Leave the arrow. Aragorn reached to pull it out. And it is the strength that flows from generation to generation in the blood. I think these answers were a BIT too obvious Joxy.
I loved these gandalg quotes. Some of his wisest sayings right next to each other:
Many who live deserve death. And some who die deserve life. Can you give it to them? So do not be too quick to deal out judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.
So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we can do is <I CANT BELIEVE IM FORGETTING> the time we have.

It's not a piece of dialogue, but rather a bit of description from the first chapter of RotK. It's 4-5 pages into the book, depending on your edition. It goes like this:
Then Pippin cried aloud, for the Tower of Echtelion, standing high within the topmost wall, shone out against the sky, glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, tall and fair and shapely, and its pinnacle glittered as if it were wrought of crystals; and white banners broke and fluttered from the battlements in the morning breeze, and high and far he heard a clear ringing as of silver trumpets.
It's pretty amazing how deep the screenwriters went digging in to find this sort of stuff. There are a lot of other bits like this where they've pulled lines from the most obscure places. I've seen lines from the prologue that were taken from deep within the Silmarillion. My favorite is the opening line of the movie. That is also from RotK, and Treebeard says it. From the chapter Many Partings. It goes like this in the book:
'It is sad that we should meet only thus at the ending. For the world is changing: I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth, and I smell it in the air. I do not think we shall meet again.'

I amar prestar aen. The world has changed.
Han mathon ne nen. I feel it in the water.
Han mathon ne chae. I feel it in the earth.
A han nostron ned wilith. I smell it in the air.
Much that once was, is lost, for none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the great rings.
Three were given to the Elves:Immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the dwarf lords:Great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of men who, above all else, desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern each race.
But they were, all of them, deceived;for another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged, in secret, a master ring. And into this ring he poured his cruelty, his maliceand his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all.
One by one, the free lands of Middle-earth fell to the power of the ring.
But there were some who resisted. A Last Alliance of Men and Elvesmarched against the armies of Mordor. And on the slopes of Mount Doom they foughtfor the freedom of Middle-earth.Victory was near, but the power of the Ring could not be undone.
It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the King, took up his father's sword. Sauron, the enemy of the free peoples of Middle-earth,was defeated. The ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever. But the hearts of men are easily corrupted, And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur to his death And some things that should not have been forgotten, were lost.
History became legend, legend became myth, and for two-and-a-half thousand years, the Ring passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, it ensnared a new bearer. (My precious...)The ring came to the creature Gollum, who took itdeep into the tunnels of the Misty mountains. And there, it consumed him. (It came to me, my own, my precious...)
The ring brought to Gollum unnatural long life. For five hundred years, it poisoned his mind. And in the gloom of Gollum's cave, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a nameless fear.
And the Ring of power perceived:its time had now come.It abandoned Gollum. But something happened then, the ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable:
(What's this?) A hobbit, Bilbo Baggins of the Shire. (A ring?)
For the time will soon come when hobbitswill shape the fortunes of all...

JOXY, will you knock it off. It is one thing to have an opinion about something and it is quite another criticizing something that someone else likes. We know you have lots of problems with some of the lines in the movie, but will you just get over it. It is not a moral issue. If you wanna debate something in the film that was moral issue, fine.

Strictly speaking, yes; but have a thought for the title of the thread you subscribe to. There are plenty of debates and arguments going on which you can join, but when someone has made thread space for quotes from the film, any counter-argument can only be reduced to a childish "yuk!", unless the quote is being corrected.
The quotes on this thread are not being offered for debate, they are personal preferences. If you want to slag off the quality of the film dialogue, there are other threads you can use.

I think the most frightening quote is from Gandalf in the room with Balin´s grave in Moria. He starts reading in the book:
Sie haben die Brücke und die zweite Halle genommen
They have taken the bridge and the second hall
Wir haben das Tor - können es aber nicht lange halten
We have the gate - but we aren´t able to hold it long.
Die Erde bebt - Trommeln, Trommeln in der Tiefe
The earth is shaking - Drumning, Drumming in the deep
Wir können nicht hinaus
We can´t go out
Ein Schatten bewegt sich in der Dunkelheit
A shadow is moving in the darkness
Wir können nicht hinaus
We can´t go out
Sie kommen
They are comming
Sorry for my poor translation, but I know the German version, only.

I've got 2...
"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them?? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement, for even the very wise can not see all ends"
-Gandalf
FOTR
"This day does not belong to one man but to all. Let us together rebuild this world that we may share in the days of peace."

:D Mine has got to be Boromir's speech:
It is a gift...a gift to the foes of Mordor. Why not use this Ring? Gondor theme kicks in
Long has my father the steward of Gondor kept the forces of Mordor at bay.By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe...Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy-Let us use it against him!

Sorry, if my English is bad, but I'm 14 and I'm just learning it, so my message can have an ununderstandable sentences.:) . Well, my favourite quote is Arwen's "There is still hope", "You will fase the darkness and you will defeat it", "The shadow won't lie not over you, not over me", Gimli's "Elf is going to caves and gnome afraids!" I have many quotes, but i can't write them, I saw LOTR only in Russian :( (So I translated all these quotes). Sorry, if they are wrong.

and I want to add some quotes - it's Elrond said "Elrond: I Aear can ven na mar. " (tearfull moment) and when Arwen rose the water of river Bruinen (English knowledge:confused: ) "Nin o Chithaeglir, lasto beth daer, Rimmo nin Bruinen dan in Ulaer! Nin o Chithaeglir, lasto beth daer, Rimmo nin Bruinen dan in Ulaer!" - I LOVE this moment, esspecially "If you want him, come and climb him"

"What did you hear? Speak!"
"Nothing important. That is I heard a good deal about a Ring, Dark Lord and something about the end of the world but please Mister Gandalf Sir don't hurt me! Don't turn me in anything... unnatural."
I always laugh when I watch that scene. :D
One of my favorites...
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as well!

Sorry to do this to you all, after the funny ones... but I've never thought any of the speeches in the book or the film had as much power as the Lament for The Rohirrim. This one grips my heart in a vice, just reading it again...
Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
(Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the sea returning?)
This bit wasn't in the film.
Oh f**k it! I'm brimming just posting the damn thing. I love this speech...

Speaking of the Rohirrim.... Could there be anything more moving then when Theoden made his speech to the Rohirrim before riding to battle at the Pelennor Fields? It's not just a favorite quote of mine but a favorite scene...
Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
I took this directly from the book version of ROTK but it sounded to me like PJ used it for Theoden in the movie and it made for an especially powerful moment. A good choice! :)

And from a bit earlier in the book:Gandalf did not move. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.
And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluin's sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the north wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.I still get goose bumps reading it.
Theoden's speech to the Rohirrim in the film actually is a combination of his and Eomer's words from the book, but it still comes across beautifully and I thought Bernard Hill did a wonderful job. The whole charge of the Rohirrim in the film is so powerful that I am willing to forgive various liberties Jackson took.

Feel free to post your favorite quote from the LOTR movie...
Legolas to barkeep (during the drinking contest): "Pastrami on rye, hold the mustard hold the mayo, and make sure the meat's hot!"

This is my dad's favorite quote from the Two Towers, "And so it begins."

It's short but very sweet.
Zrdravstye Elanimiel! Your English is coming along fine. Tolkien liked the word dwarf rather than gnome, and Arwen was made by PJ to invite the Nazgul to come and claim Frodo, though that was nothing to do with Tolkien.
And to Samweis, thanks for giving us that elegant German translation; it reads better than the English!
