Ack! Everybody has an accent to somebody that you think has an accent! oh well. Yes, styrofoam makes a sound. It doesn't bother me, but it's fun to see what it does to some people.

Is this like that hearing the TV on mute thing? *Feels unspecial again*
YayGollum
03-31-2003, 12:25 AM
I wouldn't think it's like that. Styrofoam makes a noise when you rub two pieces together, I guess. It's nothing special. oh well. Those little packing peanut things dissolve if you toss them in fingernail polish remover. *wonders where that random fact came from*

I like to pop the little packing peanut things. But dissolving them would be good, too! :D

This one time I took a whole bunch of packing peanuts (the starch kind) and licked them and stuck them together and built a little ship, and then I put it in water to see how long it would take for it to dissolve. Yeah, powersauce, British accents are cool. But when most people think of British accents they usually think of English ones. Those are cool too, but Scottish ones are much better. I'm going to pick up a Scottish accent one day.:)
Wonko The Sane
04-01-2003, 08:25 AM
And I'm going to pick up an English one! :) SCORE!!
And Roxie...you'll never believe it...but my roommate and I made stuff out of packing peanuts all the time.
We even taped them to our walls for decoration along with bubble wrap and those free AOL CDs. :)
We're so cool.
Ooh, and we made a microphone and stand out of a pizza box, wrapping paper tubes, a paper towel tube, and duct tape.
And I made her a rubber band banjo out of a few rubber bands, a kleenex box, and a papertowel tube!

Oh I'm here alright, but I tend to stay quiet unless I've really got something to say. Besides, been busy with all those last-minute assingments and junk. Huzzah, creamed some people at the fencing tournament today! Team motto: it doesn't matter if you win or lose, as long as you kick butt! Huzzah for coming in second! The girl that took first place was really really superly good, must have a talk with her so I can learn how to counter her attacks. Also, went to really nice place to eat, had steak and mushrooms marinated in wine and cheesecake too. In a very good mood right now.

Yeah, and they're equally fun to participate in. The only thing that ruins it is lousy coachs yelling instructions to their student who happens to be YOUR opponent. This one guy did that, then walked around till he was right next to me outside the strip and continued yelling. Completely threw me off and I lost the bout, which was really irritating since I was about to win. I could have told the ref. but I didn't know that at the time. Fortunately the next time one of his precious pupils got up I ignored him and smoked her. :D Ooops, this sounds like it should go on the rant thread. Ah well.

Hmm...what's something crazy I have done lately? I spent the last ten days in flip flops CONSTANTLY, all day and everywhere. I bet that is more stupid than strange, hmm...oh, I got it! heh heh I like to eat the little green decoration leaves that come with all the fancy-smancy meals. it tastes quite good actually. Then I pick apart the meals of what I don't want to eat.

I was in gym class on a treadmill for the period, and when the lady-teacher-person came over to check off my heart rate, and I turned ever so slightly to give her my chart and I stubbed my foor, fell, and shot off the back of the treadmill and landed on my you-know-what in front of everyone.

Lovely-nice, Lossen. Quite the graceful one, you are. :)
I have a love-hate relationship with Daylight Saving's Time. However, graceful or not, I somehow managed to make the advanced dance class at school! :):D *Is so happy*! Been there. It's very embarrassing, especially since I try to be graceful. I'm tall, so when I first started sprouting up I was knocking over everything. I broke so many things. Now I'm pretty good about that, but I still end up banging my head against things or tripping over my own two feet when I'm not careful.

I think I would agree, if I took fencing. :)
Hmm...today the school voted for the ASB officers. (Forget what ASB stands for ...something Student Body, I think.) Being anti-social, I don't usually do that sort of thing, unless there's an officer that I really want "in power". I guess I have better things to do with my lunchtime then wait in superly long lines just to fill in a ballot to elect people who really have no influence on the school anyway, besides what goes into pep rallies and what colors the homecoming float should be. And...do I go to pep rallies? Do I go to float meetings? Umm...no. I never complain about ASB or the officers, since I figure I have no place to complain if I don't take the trouble to vote, but really their decisions don't effect me much, so I never have much cause to complain anyway.
Anyhow, there was this scarily enthusiastic girl with bleachy platinum-streaked hair trying to convince me and some of my friends to vote for her for treasurer today at school at lunch. Too bouncy. Shiver. I felt bad for her, though, heh...she didn't know how brutal some of my friends can be toward overly-social people. But we were mostly polite. Listened to her little speech thingy, nodded our heads, then calmly explained how we were anti-social and didn't do that sort of thing. She didn't seem to see our reasoning.
"But...but...I thought everybody loves pep rallies!" she stammered. We laughed. I tried not to. Like I said, I felt bad for her. She just didn't understand our side of the spectrum.
But then, when she went on to promise us that she would support our anti-social point of view if she was elected to ASB, I couldn't help laughing along. Craziness.

I like pep rallies, too. I love them! :D Because they give us an hour block to miss class, hang out in the hallways, wreak havoc, and play cards (Spoons! Mau! BS! Hearts! :D) while all the other (normal and sane) people actually go to the pep rallies. At our school, we have the choice of attending the pep rally or not, THANK GOD. Pep rallies are evil. I had to go to some because I was in the choir and we sang the anthems. *shudder* I do. not. get. highschool. I don't get football, I don't get small towns, I do not get the combination of small towns and high school football...
Stuff I do...he he he
Well, I read, for one thing. For fun. And blow all my money on books. I listen to almost no music made in the last decade; just short of the last two decades. When I was 9 I made an entire nativity set out of leaves. A year or two ago, I dressed my younger sister up and took a whole roll of posed photos of her for use in my attempts at artwork. A few nights ago, my sister and I randomly acted out several scenes out of my Complete Works of Willy S(hakespeare), and were very awful, especially when she kept laughing during Macbeth's lines. And just the other night, I went to Wal-Mart at midnight wearing red plaid pajama pants and a bright turqoise shirt with a Hispanic Shakespeare on the shoulder (it was from a drama competition and the coloring didn't work out right).

Me neither. I live in quite a small town in California...and one of the main attractions here is our highschool football team, which has gotten rather good this year and last. So, naturally, the whole town rallies around the team, and if you're not a football fan, you're completely shunned. Doesn't leave much room for us anti-social people to move about.

You need somewhere to channel your craziness into...
Well, I'm the Ruler and Grand Poobah Originator of the Book-End Manor and Island, which is a fictional island centering on a large manor full of books, and populated by my various minions, including but not limited to The Benevolent Anarchist Librarian (Among Other Things), The Perpetual Student (and her minions), Her Clankyness the Armoress Extraordinare and co-Keeper of the Oven Mitts, The Wooden Spoon, War-Leader of the Imaginary Chocolate Minions, Head Satirist and Master of Sarcasm and Irony of the University of Cynics (my brother- Spoon because he stirs up much trouble), and Her Ladyship of the Quill and Brush, Official Artist of the Great Poobah, and The Great Royal Sculptress, empowered by the Great Poobah to make weird bronze-and-stick things of a vaguely sinister nature.
The Great Poobah speaks in the third person, encourages both weirdness and the reading of many books, and bestows titles on people. Also wears big hat.
I didn't mentioned the times I've done things like dance and sing in Tokyo subways and bribed a Wal-Mart employee to give me an LOTR sign.

Hmmm. I hate getting all dressed up. I dress for comfort and what I like, dresses and skirts are definitely outside that restriction. Ick...make-up...I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've worn make-up. And every time it's been by force. (Evil mother...evil girly friends...:p) Let's see...my campaign against make-up: it makes me feel like I have cake on my face, it takes forever to deal with, why spend money on make-up when I could spend it on music or books?, it gets messed up easily, etc. etc..
My campaign against skirts/dresses: Well, basically just that they're restricting. I love to sit with my legs apart - I dunno, it's just comfortable and natural for me - and I certainly can't do that in a skirt or a dress. The only time I wear them is to church, and that's only because my mom makes me. I guess one plus you can give to skirts is that they're very airy and breezy and such, though.
For Outcasts who like skirts, dresses, and make-up (c'mon Yay...I know you like to wear the occasional skirt every now and then...;)): I say if you like it, go for it. Whatever makes you feel comfortable. I don't feel comfortable with those kinds of things, so I don't wear them. But if you like them, then rock on. :)

I don't like to wear make-up; I break out enough without its help. And I like skirts well enough, but only long, and only full enough to walk properly in, and only on Sunday. And never with heels. Heels belong to the Antichrist. They are the invention of the devil- or the French, whichever's worse. I think it was the French. Anyway, heels are satanic and I never wear them. Clunky heels I can handle, especially on boots. Boots are wonderful. Boots are heavenly. The Great Poobah loves boots. Looooooves boots. Especially knee high boots. Knee high boots are to die for.

Oh boots are an entirely different matter. Boots are great. :) I agree, heels are possibly the worst invention of our time. How they ever lasted is beyond me.

yay! i was beginning to think i was the only girl in the world who never ever ever wears makeup. i own nothing of the sort... no makeup, no hair gel or blow dryer or curler. I'm 21 and not once in my life have i used a curler. For me, its boots or tennis shoes... occasionally sandals. I consider it "dressed up" when i wear nice black pants, something besides a t-shirt, and earrings. Whatever that says about me.
Rhiannon
04-17-2003, 05:06 AM
Make up is one of the lesser evils. Blow dryers, now THOSE are antichrists. Hair gel the same. Curlers I can deal with if someone else puts them in- I can't put stuff in my own hair. Totally helpless. I end up strangling myself.
Wonko The Sane
04-17-2003, 05:29 AM
I never curl my hair, I never dry it, and I only gell it if I care...which wait..is never.
I don't do anything to my hair except put it in a pony-tail or sit still to have somebody turn it redder.
And about makeup: I'm really unnattractive and I need all the help I can get. I feel naked without makeup. I never dress up...I'm too self conscious...I'm all not thin and stuff and I get scared that if I wear my nice jeans or my nice skirts or something that everyone will see how yucky I look.
So it's baggy jeans and big sweatshirts for me. (Case in point ALL my pix in the forum photo album.)
I just don't feel comfortable when I dress up.
Plus all my jeans are so tight around the waist...I hate that feeling. :(
I don't dress up for the same reason I wear makeup all the time: I'm ugly.
And no I'm not fishing for compliments and I don't want any, "You're not ugly" comments...Cos I won't listen.
And I don't wanna hear it.
Rhiannon
04-17-2003, 06:49 AM
That's me too. I don't have to look at myself all the time, though, and I'm not forcing anybody to look at me, and make-up takes up a lot of time and feels icky, so I only bother when I feel like putting out the effort to make myself half-way presentable (no small task- I've got one of those squished-potatoe looking faces. No definition at all).
Wonko The Sane
04-17-2003, 07:13 AM
Yeah...pretty much..except I hate looking in the mirror. If I'm gonna do it at all there'd better be some kind of eyeliner and foundation on me.
If I had to survive with no makeup that would be it.
To me that's no makeup.
I hate my eyelashes because they're blonde (Even though I'm a brunette) and I hate my face cos I have evil blotchy skin. :(
Rhiannon
04-17-2003, 07:48 AM
Mirrors are evil. Tools of the Antichrist. I avoid mirrors.
I have evil non-descript brown hair, fine, thin, oily, lank, which is always inclined to do whatever I don't want it to;
Evil horrible blotchy spotty skin (it's broken out big time at the moment, curse it);
Murky grey eyes with near-constant bags under them even I did kinda-sorta get some sleep;
Large, bulbous nose infested with black heads;
Small, scabby lips;
Straight teeth due to four years in braces, but truly evil breath;
Indistinct jaw with double chin *shudder* which gets nasty black hairs on it, evil evil evil EVIL kill the little monsters!;
Plus a figure that most closely resembles....a dumpling. Or Mrs. Potatoe-head. Also gigantic bones and square hands and huge wrists and ankles and large calves. And big, wide, flat feet, which come between me and my great love, boots.
Mirrors are evil. As long as I avoid mirrors, I can feel good about myself because I'm ever so brilliant and cynical and clever and stuff.

If I went on and on about just why I'm ugly I might have to commit seppuku.
How do you do it and continue walking? *sigh*
Rhiannon
04-17-2003, 07:56 AM
I'm coming to terms with it. I have a bunch of Foxtrot comics taped next to the mirror, too; I assume if I have to look in the thing I'll need a good laugh ("Um, those lines aren't in the script." "But they're in the book." "Yeah. We memorized it." he he he). Also I have a kitten on my lap- that helps.
This doesn't mean I don't accidentally glance in the mirror and go 'Argh! Evil troll-ogre thing!'; when that happens I hit the dirt and crawl to safety.
YayGollum
04-17-2003, 08:13 AM
Do you really expect everyone to know what this seppuku thing is or do you just expect everyone to ask? oh well. That's a pet peeve of mine. Anyways, what's so great about bootses? Oh, I mean, the only thing I don't like about you, crazy Rhiannon person, is the hair thing. I like nice hair. *pets his own beautiful hair*
Rhiannon
04-17-2003, 08:21 AM
So, YayGollum, d'you want me to tell you what seppuku is, or are you just being contrary and know already? (it's the ritual suicide commited by Japanese samurai when they were so dishonored the only way to cancel the dishonor was death: the samurai knelt and used his short sword (I can say the name of the sword but not spell it) to cut his belly open crosswise, while another samurai beheaded him from behind- a most honorable position).
Bootses are God's own footwear. They are, as my friend Rax would say, totally kick-tushie. But if you can't comprehend it, you can't comprehend it. We forgive you, though.
And my mother claims my hair wouldn't be so intolerable if I blow dried it, but as mentioned above I think blow dryers are of the Antichrist and won't go near one of my own volition. The world at large is lucky I brush my hair and should count its blessings. It's particularly bad at the moment because my bangs got too thick and I'm growing most of them out. I look like Cousin It.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not know everything. Thanks for the definition. I hope you can see why I might be peeved by someone who just shows up saying something like ---> "Oh, yeah, semper ubi sububi! My favorite Latin phrase for some insane reason. I'm sure you all know exactly what I mean by that." Or ---> "Ever play sabacc?" without saying what it is to anyone else reading the post. oh well. Got it. Bootses are cool. I say they're too much trouble. Give me laceless sneakers any day.
Rhiannon
04-17-2003, 08:49 AM
Heehee, I know all about the samurai because I read Shogun. I learned more about the samurai before I moved to Japan than I did while there. 's funny. Also, a vulgar name for seppuku is 'hari-kari' (not spelled right, but who cares); we found this out when my mom once said 'Do such and such before I commit Harry Carey!', which is something she picked up from my grandmother (like the Medusa Stare, only less potent).
I hope you can see why I might be peeved by someone who just shows up saying something like ---> "Oh, yeah, semper ubi sububi! My favorite Latin phrase for some insane reason. I'm sure you all know exactly what I mean by that."
Victorian novelists like to toss around phrases in French and Latin and assume you know what they're saying. Makes things rough on us uneducated modern people.
Bootses are cool. I say they're too much trouble. Give me laceless sneakers any day.
I wore slip-on white Keds for far too much of my life. You really don't want to know about that.

Cheers, kohaku! Kudos to you! I want to be just like you when I grow up. :D
Let's see. My make-up (all of which my mother bought me for my fourteenth birthday) is still unopened in some dank corner of my bathroom cabinet, collecting dust. Cheers for that! I admit...I do have hair gel. :o But I have to use that to keep my hair from going TOTALLY unruly on me (my hair is quite thick), and it doesn't take up time or feel too weird, so I don't have a problem with it. And it's more of a conditioner thing anyway. Blow dryer...don't have one of my own, but my mom has one. Only use that thing when my hair needs to dry super fast...maybe twice a year. Or when I just get quirky and feel like doing the whole hair-blowing-in-the-wind-super-model thing. Curlers can be fun, but only the little sponge curlers. Not curling irons. Blegh. Take forever, burn your scalp. Icky.
I don't have my ears pierced, so no earrings for me. My mom was going to take me to get them pierced for my fifteenth birthday, but...I'm scared of pain, heh. So I've been avoiding it. The only reason I might relent and go do it is if I find these super cool guitar pick earrings that my friends have been mentioning to me. (*Loves guitar...loves guitar picks, too...*)
Heels are stupid, I think. Ruin your feet. Blegh. What's the point? But boots are cool, even though I don't wear them.
Cheers for unattractive people bursting with character! Ohmygosh...Rhiannon...the fact that you're not super beautiful makes me love you more! :D And you have one of the most shiningly sparkly wonderful personalities ever. :) And BRAVE, too...and brutally honest...Jam (The-Elf-Herself) would be proud of you. And Wonko, I know you said you didn't want to hear this, but I've seen pictures of you and you are NOT the slightest bit ugly. :p It's really how you conduct yourself that matters. And you conduct yourself like you're...well...Wonks the Fox.
Now three random things ---> 1) Seppuku. Wow. New vocabulary word. Didn't know any of that stuff about it, but figured it had something to do with suicide. Hee ;) Whatever you say, dahling, I'm sure you know best.

I lie down in the Seattle airport EVERY time I travel out of there. I usually leave from roughly the same terminal and I have a special corner near a post with a plug so I can charge my phone or use my laptop.
That's GOOey of me. :)
Cos I live in Seattle.
Anyway, whoever it was that said I wasn't ugly. (It was you Kailita I know it was!!!) Is wrong.
Pictures say nothing...if you ever meet me you'll know why.
I'm overweight, I have bad skin, I have big teeth, I have a pointy nose, I appear to be eyelashless, my hair is yucky brown, I somehow always look messy and stuff...like I woke up on the wrong side of the garbage can.
Like...Elgee for example...her skin glows.
Mine kind of rots...and Elgee's all rosy...whereas I'm pale and green.
Ick.
And Yuck.
I won't go into details about why I'm gross because it makes me uncomfy. I'm not cool like Rhiannon.
Just trust me grossness.
And the whole, "Wonks is a fox" thing was a stupid thing I put in polls when I first joined because I wanted a self-esteem boost. Nobody had seen my picture at that point so they were just going off personality.
And it stuck.
It's just a nickname. Like when your dad calls you, "beautiful." It doesn't mean a thing.
It's just words.
PS- In addition to being ugly I'm also dumb. What does "semper ubi sububi" mean?
PPS- Anyone for a round of Sabacc? :D

hmm let me make this clear... females, no matter what their weight, are almost never satisfied with it. i've lived my entire life underweight and i still went through a phase in high school where i thought i wasn't thin enough. but, luckily some say, my huge appetite kept me from acting on my beliefs. eventually i just got over it. even so, i tend to wear baggy clothes... i don't feel self conscious anymore, but it's just much more comfortable. my face, on the other hand... not too bad i guess, but i have acne that will follow me the rest of my life, and my cheeks and chin just don't form a very attractive shape. but there are some people in this world who think i'm beautiful, that's good enough for me. besides, i'd rather everyone see how i really look, whether they like it or not. same story, i used to always think i was hideously ugly, but not anymore. so many people out there with different ideas of beauty, there's always going to be someone who likes the way you look and someone who doesn;t. as for me, i find most deviations from the norm to be attractive.

...never mind, false alarm, what sounded horrible was just a little bit of watery stuff and it was on a piece of paper anyway.
Ahem. I don't wallow. I don't think I'm pretty, but I don't think I'm ugly, and I am content because if I weren't content I would be even crazier than I am. However, complaining is fun, especially complaining in company, particularly with Wonks. So complaing is habitual, but the cynicsm is new; I decided this last year gorgeous people had much less fun than I do, and besides I'm excessively wonderful in all other ways, so...
And changing the topic, I got to skip art class today so that I could work on my Easter clothes. I managed to hem the blouse, but then the skirt pattern had disappeared. Then I found the skirt pattern, made the skirt with only minor mishaps (I am a complete domestic incompetent and I was doing all this without supervision or aid because my mom is gone on a trip), and was working to but the STUPID ELASTIC IN when....
I broke the needle.
The needle. On my mother's sewing machine.
AGAIN.
Actually last time it was one of the needles on the surger, but God help me, I'm cursed. Jinxed. I am so completely jinxed. I can't even make toast without burning it- one of these days I'm going to cause a kitchen fire and maybe win the Darwin award from removing myself from the gene pool (actually I did set fire to my room- on accident!- last year, so there's a melted patch in my carpet, but you really don't want to know about that. I've given up candles cold turkey). I'm surprised I didn't manage to blow the stupid sewing machine up by now.
At least I mostly finished the skirt before I caused it to self-destruct. And my Easter shoes are really cute and comfortable, which is good because I'll need something to be buried in once Mom finds out about the needle.

Will someone explain what ego boosting means. Please:) Most people love complaining:D But I`ve noticed something. In real life if you don`t show or talk about your flaws at all, no body will see them. But as soon as you open your mouth to point others your weak sides, be sure that everybody else will gladly agree:D So, why, knowing all weaknesses, keep the mouth shut?:)
On the other hand all girls like to talk about their problems. So do I.:D This looks the perfect place to do that. I totally agree with kohaku. I could sigh under her post:)

I'm afraid that if I don't point out my flaws somebody else will.
And that would hurt a lot.
So I do it for them. At least then I can say it's my own fault.

Wallowing is okay in moderation. I clearly recognize all my flaws and I'm reconciled with them, so if anyone tries to pick on me about them it doesn't affect me, because they're telling me something I already know and am okay with. Plus, it's nice to brush them off with a disdainful looks that says "duh, I'm not perfect. Any other brilliant things you have to say?" Instead of making me feel uncomfortable, I shift it over so the other person feels uncomfortable.

Psh, of course you're important, Jam. As for pointing out flaws...well, bleh, I don't usually do it, just because I hate for it to be done to me. I try not to take it personally, but it's hard. I'm sensitive to that kind of stuff. Some things more than others, though. Like if you tell me that my biology notes suck, I'm sure I'll nod and agree with you. But if you tell me that my singing sucks, I'll smile but feel bad inside. (Which is why I try to avoid singing in public, heh...I love to sing, but I don't have the best voice in the world. ) I guess criticism hurts me more when it's about things involved with my creative side - singing, dancing, writing, etc. Except for my drawings. Yeah. Constructive criticsm, like 'I think the pacing could be improved' or 'This dialogue is confusing' or 'You're not breathing from the diaphragm' or 'You're scooping on this line' and things, those are great. I love those. I go hunting for that kind of thing. Stupid criticism, like 'That's a stupid story' or 'You sound like a frog' or 'That's an ugly picture' are not helpful and are just ugly and are shin-kick-worthy. Only nasty evil people would give stupid criticism, but since they're the kind of people we don't WANT to be around, we don't CARE what they think, and we ignore them and sashay off to do our thing around people who are good for us and make us better.

Constructive criticism is the best. People who don't know me are afraid to really say what they think(I'm a little intimidating), they're not sure how I'll react. Hehe, so I have fun and pretend like I'm going to bite their head off, then drop the act and thank them.

Constructive critisizm is useful. But one can get that from very few people, I think. They must be people that you trust, you`re not afraid that they will hurt you, you believe that they want the best for you and know you very well.
I remembered an Outcast-type thing I`ve done a few days ago. I was in a mini-bus on my way home. The seats in this bus were facing each other. So I was sitting right in the middle and had the most stupid and uncontrolable smile on my face, from one ear to the other. There was nothing I could do. that smile was just stick to my face. I was sitting there having the strongest feeling that everyone in this bus thought I was absolutely crazy:D

Constructive criticism. Yes, that is good. But rare. A lot of times people criticize for the sake of criticizing, just to hear their own voices, not because they want to improve what you're doing. That's why I go to people close to me when I want good criticism - people I trust and people I know won't say something just to put me down. And I've learned to just ignore the stupid criticism. It just shows the person's ignorance.

I guess not. Maybe they're intimidated by my impressive verbal skills. Anyways, that's great if they value their opinions, someone has to, I definitely don't. Yuck, Helen of Troy was such an annoying myth sometimes. This whole war and everything started because some pretty boy had to ask Aphrodite for the most beautiful woman in the world. Of course, I'm guessing they won't put the mythos into the TV series, they'll just make up some love-story thing to go along with it instead. Still, that's another reason love is bad, although the battle scenes might be impressive. They're also making a movie called Troy on the same subject.

I love greek mythology. It`s cool. Athena is the best, the most intelligent, fair, strong, powerful. Artemis is not as interesting. Yay is right, she never had the chance to do something important or interesting. Personally I hated Appollo. He was always against the characters I loved. Including the Troyan War.
The Troyan War was all about Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysey (my spelling is terrible cause I haven`t read the book in English) and other heros. helena was just the cause for the war. Not even she herself but her beauty. So I can imagine what they have done with the story to make her and Paris (who by the way is the most boring character) the main characters.

Artemis is evil. oh well. Yes, Apollo was always achingly boring to me. Lots think he's a superly perfect type guy, but he was just as mean as his twin. Also, sure, Paris was boring. I never thought much of any of the gods and goddesses of Greek Mythology. They were too tempermental, it got very annoying after a while. Hate some chick? Turn her into a spider! Suspect your husband of cheating on you with this other chick? Have her be able to only echo others words! The only ones who were halfway decent were Athena and Artemis, more Artemis than Athena, since the latter got her feathers ruffled with that whole stupid "who's the fairest" thing that started the whole dang war. The whole thing would never have gotten started if that other goddess Eris didn't throw that stupid apple on the table at the big dinner party. They're all crazy. Yeah, huzzah for Odysseus! Huzzah for mortals who make the gods look bad and live to tell of it!
Annushka
04-23-2003, 03:56 PM
Maybe all these gods are so interesting and intriguing because they have all the weaknesses of mortals? They get jelous, mad, embarassed etc. Naturally they use their powers to solve their problems. I wish I could turn into a spider some people I know:)For me their being tempermental makes them even more appealling. Though I agree that sometimes they get a little paranoid.
I don`t remember very well, but was Athena one of the three to take part in that <the most beautiful> contest?

Not as cool as the Greeks, but oh well. *hides* I always thought that the Greek names sounded cooler. Hephaestus versus Vulcan. Ick. Athena versus Minerva. Ick. I think that only Apollo kept his name.
Diana is boring.
Athena is more fun. Sterile = bad?
Hestia never does anything.

I suspect I'll read more about the British and Irish parts of the Celtic section. I've found a couple of other mythology websites that could be worth mentioning, but I'll have to read them first. I'll do that eventually...
And I'm glad you got away from the goblins :D
EDIT: I'm starting to see more blatant David Gemmell liftings - other than stuff about the Seidh and the Morrigan.
Llew Llaw Gyffes
by Karen Davis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Llew Llaw Gyffes, "the Bright Lion with the Sure Hand", son of the virgin Arianrhod. He could only be killed neither by day nor night, indoors nor out of doors, riding nor walking, clothed nor naked, nor by any weapon lawfully made. Because his mother had cursed him to have no human wife, he married a made woman, created of flowers, Blodeuwedd. She betrayed him with Goronwy, tricked the secret of his death out of him, and led him to it. Llew became an eagle, and was recovered into human form by his uncle Gwydion. He then killed Goronwy, but Blodeuwedd was turned into an owl.
The second last Gemmell book I read, Knights Of Dark Renown had a hero called Llaw Gyffes. The only comparison I can draw is that his wife was murdered - so had no wife...

Blatant liftings off of mythology don't bother me at all, because most of my favorite books are based directly on it, one way or another (the title Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast is a bit of a give-away). I just read Tamsin by Peter S. Beagle, and there was a lot in there about Dartmoor mythology, which I'm going to have to research now.

Hestia does do things...she's just not all over the place like Athena and Diana.
I like her because of what she represents.
And Athena IS boring because she's sterile, war-like, and serious.
But not in any kind of butt-kicking way like Diana. :)
*Knows she's mixing Greeks and Romans and doesn't care.*

Hestia = hearth, home, boringness. *hides*
I never thought of Athena as especially serious. I thought of her as a superly cool and very powerful lady to have on your side. But only if you're a superly cool person yourself. oh well. I love seeing her talk to Ares. Very crazy. Anyways, Ick. Athena is a much better fighter than boring old Artemis, if that's what you're into. I'm more into wits.

I like the hearth and home. :)
I know it's wrong but I like taking care of a house, and cleaning things, and being domestic.
:) Especially if you have someone you love to take care of.

Oh, Ick! *collapses* oh well. That's the only reason you like Hestia more than Athena? That's just craziness. Athena actually has a personality. *raises his hand like a little kid* I know a twin brother and sister named Athena and Hermes! *hides*

Hestia has personality too.
She's warm, and caring and loving.
She's giving and nurturing. She cares for everyone and loves them and protects and looks after them even if they don't appreciate it or acknowledge it.
She's selfless and loving.
She's admirable.
And there's nothing wrong with me liking her domestic qualities.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I think that's wonderful. :) Personally, I'm only 15 and too young to be tied down with thinking about that kind of stuff...but someday I know that I'll probably want that.

But see...you said, "Tied down"...I'm not tied down...
And never will be. You're only tied down if you choose to look at it like that.
And you can be domestic and stuff and still have a job, and go to school, and blah blah blah..
Anyway, enough of that.
I probably look really stupid.

To actually like it?
Don't get me wrong I'm not some boring home-body...I love adventure, and danger, and really wild things baby...*decides to stop quoting HHGTTG*...I just like the domestic side of life too.

I know she doesn't have any cool stories and stuff.
So she's not as exciting as Athena! BIG DEAL!
She's still cool. She doesn't nead "AMAZING STORIES" to make her so.

Artemis was cool specifically because she did not go all over the place and do important things. Instead she had a fun personality and a good time.:D She was smart too, just not overly scholarly and serious like Athena. Not that that's a bad thing.
I don't like Roman mythology too much because I have a grudge against them for rampaging all over Britain and being mean to my Celts.:)
Ack, you're right yay, Minerva is an awful name. My parents almost named me that!

Sounds like you're just saying that you're a big fan of the things this Hestia person represents, crazy Wonko person. Is there anything that makes you especially like the Hestia person? sorry for the confusion. Anyways, got it. Artemis is cool because she doesn't do cool things. Makes all kinds of sense. *hides*

It does make sense. She's cool because she doesn't have to be all important and busy. She gets to swim and climb trees. That's cooler to me than helping heros.:)

sorry, person who's name I won't say, but I'm more of a fan of characters for their personality, not for what they do or don't do. oh well. Whatever you say, crazy person. Anyways, yes, Artemis and Apollo were a lot alike. Both very boring and overly mean. *sniff*

What I meant to say was that since I'm only in highschool, a lifestyle like that would be restricting for me right now, and I would feel like I was being tied down. But in the future, it would be a very good thing. Does that make sense? (Btw...ooh...Wonkses gotses a new avatar...cheers for eyeses. Kailita hearts eyeses. But whose eyeses are they...?)

Mmm...I guess Athena was a scholar...but I didn't really see her as overly serious. Focused, maybe. But she had fun. She wasn't all somber and junk like...umm...you know...those somber gods. (*Can't think of any examples right now...*)

Me too! In fact, when I was younger I used to tape music I liked off of movies with my little portable tape recorder...it came out really scratchy and fuzzy, but that was about all I could do. Now I just go out and buy the soundtrack. ;)

Rhiannon
04-28-2003, 02:34 AM
I've taped music off of movies! Mostly musicals, but I have a tape somewhere of the soundtrack of The Last Unicorn (all the songs, anyway).
And I have not broken a single bone in my body. Not a one, not ever. I have had more than nine teeth pulled, though. And feet taste disgusting, except for baby feet that haven't ever been walked on yet.
Kailita
04-28-2003, 02:45 AM
I've never broken any bones either, nor have I ever gotten a bee sting or had a tooth pulled or even gotten a cavity. *Is very sheltered*.
And, yes, feet are disgusting. Bleh. :p Feet and noses. I've never seen a nose that I really liked, except for LeeLee Sobieski's. Hers is, for some reason, exceptable to me. *Shrugs*
Rhianish, what's the first part of your signature about? And what in the world is "arglefraster"? Oh...btw...my dad was listening to an old Fleetwood Mac tape, and the song "Rhiannon" played, and I thought of you. :) Ever heard that song?
Rhiannon

No cavities here, but big teeth in a small mouth. Urk. Four years of braces, two head gears, Ick ick ick. *puts hand over mouth protectively*
Kaia! You must must must go read The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patrica Wrede this moment. They start with Dealing With Dragons and are hysterically wonderful! Brief explanation- one of the best characters is the very matter-of-fact witch Morwen, who has a sign in front of her house reading 'None of this Nonesense, Please'. Arglefraster you must read the books for. Run run run now!
And I have never heard that song, though you're the second person to mention it. I must seek it out. I don't think we have any Fleetwood Mac in the house (we've got Rush and Led Zeplin and Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd and The Alan Parsons Project, though. And lots and lots of Beethoven).

I`ve broken my arm when I was 11. And that was fun cause I didn`t have to attend jym classes and wasn`t able to write. That was splendid. but now whenever it rains my arn starts bothering me very-very much.
Kaili, why are noses disgusting. And why are people always NOT happy with their noses? I am.:D It gives my face something very unique. Besides it`s our family nose. Every woman in our family has it. The sad thing is that in time it starts to hang down a little:D

No, no, no, no subject changing yet! *Reverts back to old subjects*
Dealing with Dragons! I've heard of it, but never read. Must seek them out! Running, running, running! :)
The Rhiannon song by Fleetwood Mac isn't the bestest song in the world...I don't think it's even called Rhiannon, it just has that name in the chorus...but I heard it and I thought of you. *Shrugs*. Cheers for Led Zeppelin! Hehe...those peoples...so funny...;)
I don't know why noses are disgusting...they just are. Ugh. Kailita abhors noses. Blegh. Especially her own. Well...she's come to accept it the way it is, since there's nothing she can do to change it...she doesn't like it but she's dealing with it. But I'm glad that you like your nose, Annushka. I've broken my arm, twice. Once when I was little, and once a couple of summers ago when I was playing street hockey and some kid tripped me when I was going for a goal. But it didn't really hurt, I just couldn't move it, so I got back up and kept playing. My mum yelled at me for that, didn't realise how bad it was and go to the hos
