The Purist's Lament in Obtuse Couplets
In telepesgalungwe-tangles
Jackson's adaptation jangles,
Film-clinker's mere approximation;
Screenplay nearer a novel'zation,
As Peter, Philippa, and Fran
Both undercut and overran
The truer heart of Tolkien's Tale:
To "almost get" is yet to fail.
Though Arwen's role (or need we mention?)
Hath rous'ed rather more attention
Rude as a blade behind the ear,
The heedful, weeping, wince to hear
That sadder character-mangling's borne
By poor most-distorted Aragorn,
Who, Elfstone and Isildur's heir,
Such burdens did not wish to bear
And so decided "not to" years ago:
In all PJ's shame no greater woe.
More of this "alas" anon, as time, rhyme, and Iaradanduin's indignation may later permit; passersby of poetical mind are warmly bidden "bring it" in verses of their own devising...
