I'd like to ask what am I supposed to do if I become a member?
Maedhros
12-13-2002, 11:02 PM
Well, to become a member, you only have to like Tolkien and like to discuss about his books.
It would be helpful I you like to engage in discussions and do a little research on certain topics. Hopefully, you would like the idea of debating within the guild and with other guilds.
Finduilas

May I join you then?I would be very pleased.:)

Excuse me for bothering you but I just found out that I can't be a member of two Guilds.
I was asking myself if I could then sign out .I'm terribly sorry about that but I really want to become a member of the Tolkienology.
And am I still allowed to post in this threads if I am not a member?
Maedhros
12-16-2002, 06:06 PM
Only in the open topics, not in the athrabeths.

Question: What's the difference between the Guild of Tolkienology and the Guild of Scholars?
The Guild of Tolkienology has been around longer and has a lot more members. They also have wide variety of activies. Now the Scholars' guild was recently restarted and has a much smaller membership, so far the Guild of Scholars have only been discussing and debating... that is, we don't have as many activities here in the Guild of Scholars as they do over in the Guild of Tolkienology.
Both guilds are centered around Tolkien and take part in debates and discusions.
You may want to go to the Guild of Tolkienology and ask them what the difference is, they may offer a better answer than I have.

MATTMAN AND KAELATH:
No one is allowed to be a member of two or more of these guilds:
1. The Guild of Ost-in-Edhil
2. The Guild of the Periaur
3. The Guild of Scholars
4. The Guild of Tolkienology
since these guilds are separate groups and debates are held between them.
You are both members of the Scholars and of the Tolkienologists. Kindly resign from one of these.
Thank you
MATTMAN
02-17-2003, 04:38 PM
Since I am unable to be a memeber of two guides, I guess that I will half to resign from the Guild of Scholars. Thanks for your kindness.:)

I'm here at ithrynluin's invitation, and I would very much like to join the Guild, but I should let everyone know that I am only familiar with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and have only a nodding aquaintance with the Simarillion. I plan to renew my relationship with the Sim soon, as well as introduce myself to the HoME books.
So may this humble hobbit matron join?
Ithrynluin

Mirabella! Wonderful to have you here! It is not important how much one has read - in many instances that doesn't mean much - it is one's eagerness to learn about Tolkien's world and discuss the various aspects of it that counts.
Please feel free to start posting in any of our threads (except in the debate thread, which is exclusive).
Again, welcome to our guild.;)

I am writing to see if I could join this guild.
I am new not only to this forum, but new to forums in general so please forgive me if I commit unintentional errors in protocol. However, I have enjoyed Tolkien's work for a long time and I think I can have a fairly intelligent convesation on The Hobbit (In fact, I am now reading it to my 4-year old and she is enjoying it almost as much as me.), LOTR, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.
Hope to hear from you soon!

Greetings, gondorian45. You have been added to the list.
Tell us a bit about your Tolkien background.
Feanorian
03-19-2003, 06:22 AM
I have been interested in Tolkien's works for well, I'd say the last three years. I have read LOTR twice not even atempting to count the number of times I have skimmed different chapters and sections. I have read The Hobbit, The Sil, and The Unfinished Tales each twice, I have been on two different mailing lists that started out great but have deteriated over time. There are not many things I enjoy more then talking, debating, and reflecting Tolkien's works, that pretty much sums it up, Thank You for accepting me I hope i can be a good addition to the discussions in this Guild.
Lindir
03-19-2003, 07:56 AM
I've been interested in Tolkien for about twenty years now, but have never actually managed to get through the Silmarillion yet. I have on the other hand read The Lord of the Rings about forty times, so in discussions related to this book, I think I might contribute heavily. I have of course also read The Hobbit a fair number of times and also some of Tolkien's non Middle Earth works.
As for my life outside the addiction, I'm an archaeologist who is very much looking forward to the beginning of the field season.

Welcome aboard, perhaps I might interest one of you in an inner debate that will take place in our Guild.

If you were talking to me I would most definitly be interested, however if you were'nt and were just referring to Lindir who appears a notable scholar indeed then that is alright as well.

I'm not sure who I should be directing this to (the Moderators, perhaps?) but thank you for the promotion!:)
I noticed after my last post that I am no longer an "Apprentice". I'm now a "Guildsman".
Ithrynluin
04-05-2003, 01:27 AM
Jim, the so called "promotion" comes of its own accord basically.
Each member is an apprentice until he/she reaches 50 posts I think - though you have 30 so the WM might have lowered the number. Then you become a guildsman (like you are now), and finally, after reaching a 100 posts, you become a loremaster and gain the ability to use a custom title.
There you go.:)

Welcome to the neighborhood, Captain. How did you get interested in JRRT's writings? Have you been a Tolkien junkie for long?
Feanorian, that's a great idea to set up an intra-guild debate inter-mixing the new members with us "old timers". It would give us a great chance to get to know one another, and for the new members to get a feel for how the debates work. Plus, it would be a great dress rehearsal for the new guys before mixing it up with the other guilds in the tournament (assuming they would be interested:) ).
I would be happy to set this up if Captain, cardanas, herendil and Frodo Baggins are interested.

To give you an example, I have enjoyed JRRT for over 25 years. I started out by reading The Hobbit when I was 12 or so, moved quickly to LOTR. I found The Silmarillion rather daunting the first time I tried it when I was in High School, but found it to be 'an acquired taste', like drinking black coffee.
At the moment, I am making my way through the History of Middle Earth series (I'm almost finished with Book of Lost Tales, Vol. 2). I read LOTR every three or four years (it's like revisiting an old friend:) ) and I'm now reading The Hobbit to my children as a bedtime story (editing the more graphic parts, of course).
I suppose the part of the legendarium that interests me the most is the relationship between Men and the other races, how each race seems to embody a particular aspect of human nature.

First off thank you for allowing me to join the guild of scholars Baragund.
I Starting reading Lord of The Rings at the begining this year and i also read the Hobbit also this year. And I am starting the Silmarillion when my friend returns it to the library.
What I love about Tolkien is all the different languages he created for this world. And the land he built. He put much detail in the land almost as if they are charactors themselves.
I like that at a common enemy it will unite all species together weather they dont like each other or not. That i say has a same feel of human nature and or world.

I agree with this point. It seems like it would be easily seen and yet this is the first time I have considered that aspect of it. Such as Saturday, when Saddam was captured, it was many countries working together, though it was US soliders it was a worldwide effort, much like the success of the War of The Ring.
By the way Welcome to The Guild. It is always good to get new members not only in the guild but to the world of Tolkien.
P.S. I am coming back to the guild, because I always found interesting conversation here. I am not going to be participating in the rest of TTF, just GoS and any debates that might arise.

I believe Morgul King (BC) shall be returning to TTF soon, he has found his interest re-sparked as of late, as have I. Elendil I am in less communication with, I forgot what happened to him. Did he leave or simply fade away? He was always a great contributor.

I guess this would be a question asked many a time in this thread, yet may I join?
¤ ~A little about the Turnolwe~ ¤
¤ I began my interest of JRRT about eight years ago with the reading of The Hobbit. I quickly found myself imeresed in the LotR series and was content for a few years. Through those years my interest grew to a love for JRRT and my need for more knowledge began to peak, pushing at my wallet. So it was that I picked up the Unfinished Tales and shifted slowly through them, for I had not read the Silm yet. As of this moment, I am close to the end of the Silm and plan to read it once again so that the information may seep more into my mind.
¤ There has been much time that I have considered that which draws me to the works of JRRT, and the conclusions I have found are these:
1) The multitude of themes that JRRT weaved into the writings
2) The power of the very words, for they seem to leap off the page
3) The lore and history of the entire thing, especially that of the Rings of Power.
¤ ~Of Isthir the Turnolwe outside of Tolkien's works~ ¤
I am soon to reach the age that erases the 'teen' from the end of my age and work full-time. For as long as I can remember my love has always been that of fantasy works, music, and computers. This may explain why it is that I love Tolkien's works so greatly. I am new to TTF, but have been a Ringer for sometime (hadn't found this glorious Forum until just this day). Ontop of that I am in the preperation phase of writing my own book using the same style that Tolkien used so effectivly, though with more action. I reside in the wonderful state of Colorado (where it is freezing right now!) and have been online since I was twelve.
If there are anymore questions of me or my knowledge of Arda, please do ask.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Isthir!! :)
The Guild of Scholars is a small group so it provides a more intimate, less daunting atmoshphere than mixing it up with the forum at large. (Well, that's what attracted me to the guild. I found myself somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer size of our community at first and this was a good place to 'find my feet'.)
You'll find most of the GoS are close to your age though we have a few older members. I officially entered middle age last summer with my 40th birthday. :( Also, you'll find we are located all over the world but most are either in the US or UK.
I'm starting to digest your post regarding the rings of power and it sounds fascinating. Look forward to resuming discussion on that!

Thank you indeed Bara. I have always found the Rings of Power completely fascinating, and though I have not read HoME I have drawn many conclusions about them over the years.
As well, if there is any duties or tasks that I must perform to become of the Guild; I will do them as quickly and accuratly as I may. Though I must agree, the GoS does seem to be more open and less rigourus, though still filled with much tangable knowledge. I was originaly considering the attempt of joining the Tolkeinists, but found their forum, though organized, very daunting and confusing. I hope that I can contribute positivly to the GoS.

Hi, Paul.
Due to long-time inactivity, this guild is scheduled to be archived, unless some 'revolutionary' or highly-original idea what to do with the guild emerges.

It is probably time to archive it, before yesterday no one had posted since February.
