hmmm, Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall, any surrealist. Also Leonardo, and the unknown who made the unicorn tapestries in the cloisters. Also, hmm, John Howe, Ted Nasmith, Inger Edlefelt, Andrew Wyeth, to name a few...

Waterhouse is one of my favourite painters too, one of his paintings hangs in my local gallery - Hylas and the Nymphs - I've got a lot of his prints scattered about the house. Not as well known as he should be...
Two other painters I admire are Van Gogh and Turner, both really innovative I think; and not forgetting JRRT himself - I'm a big fan of Tolkien's art... really unique stuff and a great compliment to his writings.

Ooo, I take it that it's an original painting? That's so cool! I have posters of Miranda and the Tempest, The Lady of Shalott (My favorite painting, the one in the boat), and The Soul of the Rose hanging up in my room.
It's surprising, he's really popular among artists on Elfwood, but is basically unknown to the general public. Rather sad, I think...

Man! What a hard question to answer!
Well Salvador Dali is way up there on my list. I guess he would be my favorite.
Anyone recommend web sites for fellow surrealist fans?

As a fellow surrealist fan, I am afraid i have never used the 'net for anything useful or educational...all games and TTF/Tolkien/StarTrek sites... I'll do some checking around...

Claude Monet is my favorite artist. I love the impressionists. My favorite painting by Monet is 'Spring in Giverny'. It is not his most famous, but my fave nevertheless.

Oh, yes, Waterhouse! I love the "Lady of Shalott", I also recently saw an LotR caption for the water nymph picture, "The real reason Frodo wandered off in the Dead Marshes" or something like that.
I also have sim skins for many of the women from his paintings.

I'm very fond of Impressionism- Monet is my absolute favorite, love him to pieces... There are a few of VanGogh's pieces that I like, especially Cafe Terrace at Night... I like Degas, too. I'm mostly into that old, classical art...
And of course, how can I forget? DaVinci. His pencil sketches are what got me into pencil portraits- we had to do a copy drawing of one of the old masters for extra credit in History two years ago... did The Head of Judah... came out pretty well, considering I really hadn't worked with pencil like that before- I've honed my skill a lot.
So yeah.. I'm fond of that old classic style...
I also have a photographer that I love- Brassai... I don't know if any of you have seen his stuff; he's pretty famous. My absolute favorite photo is "Les Escaliers de Montmarte".
And here I go rambling again. My, I really must learn to control my posts!

Just a really arb comment, but I have just decided I have soo many fave artists! Had my first art lesson as a senior (grade 10, I've chosen my subject package and therefore I'm doing the subjects I love. Art is, obviously, one of them:D )
There's this one artist, I cannot for the life of me remember who, that painted such a beautiful painting of a gay boy (well, I guess it isn't a fact but there are many clues and the painter himself had a male partner.)
It is soo wonderful, you can get so much out of the painting it has so much expression. I just want to be able to do something that people can say the same about my work!! you know what I mean?? (That excludes some people, since people already say that about their work!;)

Yes, he's amazing! "Quirky", you say? Quirky but real! lol! I remembered him because I just saw a Rockwell calander in my band director's office, and it reminded me how much I enjoy his work.
Good stuff, that.

Does anyone else like Brian Froud? He illustrates numerous faerie books such as Lady Cottington's pressed Fairy book.
Uses alot of watercolours.

i love Brassai and and i love that picture......
have you heard of Doisneau? there are two amazing pictures i know the titles in english though..."musician in the rain" and "hotel de ville kiss"-i'm not sure about the latter i'll have to check
anyway i was going to say that my favourite artists are Gustav Klimt, Picasso(as usual), Rembrandt*, and i also like Brueghel
*there is a book by Sylvie Matton called "rembrandt's whore(am i allowed this word? that's what the book is called....) and it's fascinating, it follows the story of Rembrandt's common-law wife and although it's a novel it is based on historical facts
