The Bourne Identity was GREAT but the book was better.
And as far as What a Girl Wants I refuse to go see it. Amanda Bynes can't act and the fact that Colin Firth actually did a movie with her disgusts me.
Colin Firth is an amazingly talented actor and he shouldn't waste himself on Amanda Bynes movies. Yuck. Her movies suck..
On another note it sucks even more that that stupid sucky girl got to go to England and meet Colin Firth and I didn't.
I deserve to be in England more than she does!!
Hmm...this sounds like a rant.

I've been in mostly-empty cinemas- this town has a tiny theatre with six tiny screens and incredibly uncomfortable chairs, and when my sister and I go to it it's usually us and maybe a gaggle of middle-aged women. The only times I've ever seen the theatre full were for Daredevil and Chicago.

Daredevil had potential- Affleck was really good as the title character- but in the end it sucked, despite Frank Miller (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) getting a pen stuck in his head (no more then he deserved for the travesty that is Dark Knight 2). The fights scenes were way too Matrix-esque (people outside of computers can. not. jump. that. way!), and the romance side of the plot was a ruin (ok, they're trying to kill each other- no wait, suddenly they're in love. Huh? it made so much more sense in the comic book, where Elektra was just crazy). Actually aside from Affleck in a leather suit there was very little good about the movie.
Chicago I enjoyed, but mostly because it's a musical- I'm a musical fiend. I like the soundtrack. I didn't much care for the costume design or the choreography, though, and while Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah were excellent, ReneeZelleweger and whats-his-face, the male lead, were not; they just didn't have the gumbo required for their parts. The best numbers were the opening All That Jazz (Zeta-Jones), When You're Good to Mama (Queen Latifah) and Cell Block Tango (Zeta-Jones et al).
Annushka
04-21-2003, 10:02 AM
I liked Chicago. It was funny, ironic, no sentiments and the music is of course great. I was humbling All that jazz on the way home. People were kind of scared. I don`t think that Renne Z. and Richard Gere were all so bad. I liked them. They were inspired and having fun with their parts. Altough of course Queen Latifah was the best:)

Chicago does have a plot, yes. Cats does not. YayGollum should avoid Cats. And Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Renee Z. and Richard Gere weren't bad in Chicago, they just weren't up to the strength of the rest of the cast; and the trying to make Roxie a sympathetic character was a mistake. The point of the show is that it's about horrible people doing horrible things and getting famous for it. It took away the edge to try and make us like the characters.
I love musicals. I'm a Broadway fiend, and a lover of 50s movies; I adore Singing in the Rain. I love Phantom of the Opera. The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll & Hyde, Les Miz- love musicals. Love plays. Love theatre! Any kind of live show I love.

Cats is bad? I'm supposed to like it because my evil mom lady does. I like some of those songs. *hides* oh well. Got it. There is a plot to that Chicago thing. Doesn't sound very interesting. People doing evil things and obtaining love for it?
Rhiannon

People committing crimes and using it to propel their careers. Not a new idea.
And Cat's has wonderful music, but is completely plot-less.
The-Elf-Herself
04-22-2003, 01:36 AM
Okay, maybe I spoke too soon. I love Singing in the Rain, although for some reason I see that as a comedy, not a musical, even though it's really both. Yeah, I read the book for the Phantom of the Opera as well, very good. Poor evil phantom guy. I also like the music from Cats, but that's mostly because I'm a fan of T. S. Eliot, who's poems are used for those songs.

Cats has a plot. They're having a cat meeting or something, but then a cat lady who was an Outcast came back, and she wanted back in the club, but they didn't want to let her in. So the whole plot is basically about her getting her way back into the club.:) Or something like that.
YayGollum
04-22-2003, 11:05 PM
Well, you know. It's not much of a plot. They toss some crazy pirate cat story in there. They have a lot of catses introduced for no good reason. Unless you count just to have more songses. Not much has to do with the plot you're talking about, but sure, it's there.

Grease is THE MOST stupid movie of all times. And Sounds of music are a little too sentimental for me. Though they are classic of course.
I think that Chicago is mainly about manipulation. If you`re smart, cinical and know human psychology, you can win everything. What I liked about the movie most of all is that it once again showed how stupid and predictable the masses are. I hate crowds and avoid them as much as I can. They make people lose their own opinion, their voice and their will. Which makes them very dangerous.
Rhiannon
04-23-2003, 08:03 PM
That's a good summary of Chicago, Annushka- I think the producers failed to understand that, which really weakened the film.
And I do not like Grease. I like the Sound of Music, but only once every five years. The book it's based on is really good, though.
Wolfshead
04-23-2003, 08:12 PM
I don't like the Sound Of Music - it depresses me, but has anyone heard this new version of one of the songs which is in those chart-things just now? I heard it yesterday when I was in the hairdressers, it was horrible. And then Madonna's latest song came on, American Life, I think, and it was all I could do not to leave, honestly. I'm sorry, but it really was awful, more deprived of musical talent than most trash in the charts nowadays. Then I was saved after that by Walk Of Life by Dire Straits :)

Let's see. Haven't seen Chicago, but wanted to. Phantom and Les Miz are BEAUTIFUL and worth seeing. Cats has some great dancing and cool music, but doesn't seem to have much of a plot. I've never seen all of Grease, but it seemed rather stupid, and Sound of Music is okay, but I've seen it way too many times to like it much. (My mom is in love with it. )

Am I the only one who thinks powersauce is a ridiculous name? ;)
Anyway, my drama teacher in middle school was like that but I WAS the favourite.
Then in High School I was the favourite freshman year, but we merged our drama department with that of an all-girls school up the hill near my house and so all the girls from that school got the good parts. *sigh*

When I was in 5th grade we were staging Cinderella. I was the fairy. I had a very beautiful golden dress which I was very proud of and was looking forward to wearing. But my EVIL drama teacher didn`t allow me that. Her explanation was so stupid I don`t even remember it. That was the last time I took part in such things.
By the way I have a picture of myself. Though I`m not sure I would be able to attach it. If I do, this was my last birthday party.

Well, I`m really surprised with my success in this case:) I`ll try to help you with that. When you`re posting a reply under the text you can see ATTACH FILE. You click Browse and then find the place where the picture you want to post is located. You click it and that`s it. I hope my explanation is any good.

I live in Armenia. It`s not so far away. though sometimes I feel like it`s an island somewhere in the middle of an ocean. Geografically it`s on the south of Russia, Caucasas. My first language is Armenian. But I know Russian as well. Post-soviet countries, you know. Russian used to be as important as your native language. Actually languages are my passion. I want to know as many as possible. I know a little German and Italian. Hopefuly in summer I would be able to spent more time on that:)

I call Sydney the paris of the south because I am a bit sarcastic. It is a beautiful place, but not very cultured. Its all beaches and rugged sporty type things.
There are people of every nationality living here so I suppose Sydney is good in that way. We probably even have Armenians!
My family have been here since the English arrived about 200 years ago.

At least your family has history.
I'm half Spanish. My grandparents on my mothers side were born in Mexico and moved to the US when they were kids, and their parents moved from Spain.
I'm also German. My dad's dad is FROM Germany, and I'm Irish from my dad's mum.

I believe the first of my family to land on these shores was a pickpocket called Thomas O'Keefe. Transported in about 1810. Another was an Irishman named McCarthy transported for "Uttering oaths against the king". They don't make crimes like that any more!

I'm half Spanish, too. Or Mexican, anyway. My dad is a Mexican. Ironically, he doesn't speak a word of the language, and my mom (who is all-American...or all-Texan, anyhow ...but took Spanish as her major in highschool) speaks Spanish fluently.
I'm learning it right now in school.

I REALLY want to learn Gaelic as well. :)
I knew this girl in HS that didn't really speak Gaelic and actually wasn't even Irish, but she dyed her hair copper-red and pretended to be. She claimed to have lived in England when she was 3 so that she had an English accent when she got mad, and she claimed that she lived in Ireland as well, (which I later learned was a lie) and that she spoke Gaelic, and even dreamed in Gaelic.
So yeah. She was a huge liar.
But I wanna learn it for real. :)

I much prefer English - it's so much more descriptive than other languages.
Anyway, I've finally posted a couple of pics of myself, so take a trip over to these following links
Today, myself and one of my friends, Simon, went out and about in town armed only with a digital camera and some money. We took quite a lot of photographs, usually of completely random things, and here are some of the results And this is my first time posting my picture as well, you lucky, lucky people...
This one is of me, in the local Spar (where Simon works, so we were entitled to do this kind of thing) holding a can of spam. Yes, that's spam.
http://www.thetolkienforum.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=300051
We also met a couple of old ladies, whom neither of us knew. We asked if we could get our picture taken with them, they said yes. They asked us where we were from, we said the North. They asked north of where? Simon said France, we were on holiday getting photos for our album. Neither of us sound remotely French, yet they seemed to buy it
Anyway, this is me with two old ladies we'd never met before. (Psst! I'm the one in the middle)

I don't see what the big deal is about accents. Whether or not the person sounds "cool" or not doesn't affect me, I'd rather pay attention to the words their saying, that's the important part. 1. It is generally rainy a lot, and I love rain.
2. It has lots of old castles and ruins, it has so much more history than the U.S.
3. Because it has great cities such as London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
4. It has Loch Ness.:D
5. It has Stonehenge and the Callanish Standing Stones.
6. All of the people that I've ever met from there have accepted me for who I am, instead of constantly reminding me of how weird I am and trying to change me.

I love Europe in general and Britain (not just England, Britain) in particular because the languages and mythologies and historical happenings I'm most interested in are centered there, for the most part. And my family comes from there (several generations back, pre-Civil War, but still from there).
And I like accents for the same reason I like languages- the variance of sound. Britain accents are the ones I like the sounds of best, is all.

Nature is not boring. It makes you breathe and makes you happy or sad. Well if going for a walk. My Dad was trying very hard to make me enjoy spending time in nature. I can`t take it longer than 2 hours. This summer I had the saddest experience of my life that proved that me and nature don`t get along very well;) I WENT CAMPING with friends. That lasted 4nights during which I was COUNTING the hours to leave. That was so sad:(
Accents are fun. BTW, Tolkien liked Irish people very much but couldn`t stand their accent. Well, I like it very much. It suits them.

YayGollum, avoid the poetry of the Romantics at all costs. Particularly Wordsworth. Blah blah blah nature blah blah blah nature blah blah blah overblown arrogant poety blah blah blah nature you get the idea.
However, despite my strong dislike for Wordsworth (and the Romantics in general, though I make allowances for the ones that don't annoy me), I love nature myself (when it is not making me too cold, too hot, too wet, too sweaty, or when it is not scratching, biting, and tripping me).

Actually, Kaili, I pictured you as a little bird even before your avatar:) A cute little bird. I guess I wasn`t around when you were a fairy girl.
I pictured Yay absolutely not the way he really looks. He has dark hair and is quite tall. I thought he was short with blonde hair and, to tell the truth, not with green skin:)
YayGollum
05-07-2003, 09:05 AM
Hm. Maybe I just look tall in that picture. oh well. I thought I was pretty average. Anyways, Yikes! Me? A blonde? No offense, but Ack! That's just craziness! *hugs his beautiful black hair* My family is going to another Renaissance Festival soon. Maybe we'll take some more pictures.

Okay, that's it, I definitely need to get some pictures up here.;) I have a friend with a scanner and a digital camera...maybe we can play around with it some...
Yes, I used the cute but spastic red haired fairy girl as my avatar back in...oh, Marchish. I liked her. ;) But I recycle my avatars and rotate them with the months.
I always picture Yay with dark hair. He brags about it enough, doesn't he? :o:p;) He wouldn't be Yay without his beautiful black hair. But I've pictured him like that from the beginning, probably because one of the first posts I ever read from him was the one where the picture was posted.

Yay, how long is your hair? You keep saying how you're hugging it, and in the picture you post up there's no way you could possibly hug it. Very confusing. I dunno, just my random curiousity. Anyways, I remember seeing some drawing that you said some friend made of you, The_elf_Herself person. I have no idea how great of a depiction that was, but oh well. It would have been better if it was colored.

It was good enough to give you an idea of what I look like, but too vague for my Mom to have any problem with me posting it. Yeah, I wish it was colored too, but that's also forbidden, since apparently if you guys knew the exact shade of my hair and eye color you'd come stalking me(yes that WAS sarcasm). I WOULD use that word if I knew it.
I love long hair. But I always wanted to have really short haircut. But unfortunately I have curly hair. So I`d look like a puddle. That`s so sad. Once when I was 11 my mom decided to cut my hair. She started from the right side. When she got to the left side there was a difference of 4inches between my hair on the right and left chicks. I still don`t how I could survive such a disaster:D Never trust your moms with your hair;)

Hello, hello, I'm not at home anymore. Forgot to tell any one that I'd be traipsing across the US. So my presence will be sporadic for a week or so. Do please try not to waste away pining, or anything else drastic :p
My hair used to be really long, but I cut it off (to the shoulders) when I was thirteen and it hasn't gone past my bra strap since. It's very thin, fine, and oily, and when it gets to a certain length it gets nasty and stringy. It's also an indeterminate blonde-brown color. The most descriptive word is 'dishwater'. And my bangs had gotten progressively thicker and I didn't like them, so I've been growing most of them out, and it. is. a. pain. Ugh.

People sometimes act absolutely insane. Would either of you come up to someone to touch his/her hair? But anyway, these ladies just wanted to make a compliment. That`s nice of them, isn`t it? Besides hair that change its color under the sun is very beautiful. You have the chance to have two different hair colors without that horrible dying (I can`t remember how that word spells):( Southern people who are mostly dark have this thing for light hair. Imagine a dark scinned woman with blonde hair and black roots. Our professors are mostly perverted old men so I understand what you mean. And D if that makes you feel that bad you should do something about it. Why let strange people make you feel bad? Okay. We've talked about Introverted/Extraverted Outcasts. Now a new spin. Optimists/Pessimists. Which way do GOOers tend to lean?
For those of you who don't know...optimists always look on the bright side of life (heh...Monty Python...okay, sorry, way off topic, just ignore that. ;)). They see the good side of everything...and even when things seem like there is no chance of turning up, the true optimist will truly believe that things are going to miraculously change for the better. Annoying point about optimists: they can be annoyingly cheery.
Pessimists usually see the downsides of things. While more grounded than the up-in-the-clouds optimists, they're more like down-in-the-dirt. Over the top pessimists can usually find something bad to point out in every situation. Kind of like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Annoying point about pessimists: they can be the worst party poopers ever.
Example of optimism versus pessimism. I went to a concert with two friends of mine last weekend. The traffic was pretty bad. Now, while we are waiting in line, my optimist friend is completely unruffled, totally convinced that we'll still arrive on time and get perfect seats at the concert. While my pessimist friend is already calculating in his head how long it will take for us to drive all the way back home after we get to the concert and find that there are no seats left, humming "It's the end of the world as we know it..."
So there you have it, pretty thoroughly. Then you have your realists...but I'll get into that later...

I'm of a rare breed known as a cynical optimist. I have a rampantly optimistic side, or would have one, were it not checked by my thoroughly cynical, calculating bent. All in all they balance each other out, so I can usually understand both optimists and pessimists, without truly sharing either of their views. What I am depends on who I'm with. If I'm with mostly pessimists, I take an optimistic perspective just balance things out. If I'm with optimists, I'll caution them as a pessimist. The thing that baffles me is that there aren't more people out there who are equally made up of both optimistic and pessimistic parts; trying to referee an argument between one of each is crazy and futile.

I swing back and forth too, and I think it depends purely on the company (if I'm with friends and we can laugh and joke and be hyper, or with my family and younger siblings being whiny and things) and my sugar level.

Got it. I'll try to remember what I said instead of sorry about that. Anyways, yes, I hate the touchy-feely types. I've never gotten teachers and students that hug each other and pat each other on backses and high five and even tap shoulders or mess around all the time. I quickly recoil from things like that. oh well. I would think that the teachers should remain distant or that the students wouldn't act especially friendly with the evil people that make them work. Silly ideas, huh? oh well. I'm a pessimist. Not as scary as they were described, though. I would love to meet that friend of yours! Sounds like something I'd do. But then, I wouldn't be at a concert in the first place.

My pessimist friend, Yay? Heh...he's very fun...not always quite as pessimistic as that time I described, but definitely not an optimist. And he has something with that "end of the world" notion/song.
Jam's position is sort of what I would call a realist, minus the swinging back and forth according to company part. A realist sees the bad things as bad and the good things as good, and doesn't really elaborate on either side. Hence the name realist. That's probably the closest to what I am. But I tend to lean towards the optimistic side in situations concerning my friends, and towards the pessimistic side in situations concerning myself. (For instance: If a friend makes a mistake, I immediately reassure him/her that it will be all right, that it probably isn't as bad as it seems. But if it's me who makes the mistake, I immediately think the worst.)
I have this thing about getting my hopes up. I figure that if I put my expectations low, then I have less of a chance of being disappointed. Also, one of the main optimists in my life (that friend I spoke of earlier) is Miss Super Optimist...and has somewhat tainted my view on optimists. Optimism with balance is a good thing. But in heavy doses, it's just too over-the-top to take seriously. (Although pessimism is probably the same way.) Also, this friend of mine is so optimistic that she sees anything that isn't super-hopeful like herself as pessimism, which it isn't. It gets quite annoying after a time. If things are good, then great, I'll be happy with them. But if they're not, then I'm going to say they're not...I'm not going to just pretend them all away.
And there you have it once again. Kailita's ramblings at 11:30 at night. Golden spork for anyone who read this whole post, and golden spork plus stuffed manatee for anyone who read the whole post and understood it.;)

Ack! I understood all of that craziness! Not hard. Anyways, I did not know that pessimists didn't see good things as good and bad things as bad. Or do they just know what most people think and just happen to disagree so they won't be dissappointed?

question; does the golden spork come in the stuffed manatee, or just w/ it?;) cause, I get both:D
as 4 pessimism vs. optimism....+realism....well, out of those 3, I'm probably closest to realism, but, I'm probably closest to the blamer......let me give you a better picture.....euh....
pessimist-"the glass is half empty"
optimist-"the glass is half full"
me-"IAN!!!!!!!!!!!! STOP DRINKING MY Dr. Peppers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that's actually not an exxageration...
hey, K, I love your deep thoughts thingy... that's what I call the hive mind syndrome:rolleyes: :D
BTW, K, your post says 11:30, but the timer thingy at the bottom says 1:30... wackiness:rolleyes:

The thing with high expectations is SO right. You get dissapointed whenever you get very excited about something and picture a perfect situation:( The reality usualy cracks everything:( But there is a good side too. You can laugh really hard on yourself in that situation:D

Wow! More people understand my ramblings than I thought! :) *Is happy now* D, the golden spork comes with the manatee...otherwise you'd have to rip open the manatee to get to the spork, and that wouldn't be good.

Heh...D...that's because I live in California and you don't...
Ugh...the "hive mind syndrome", as you call it, drives me completely insane! I mean, how many girls does it take for one girl to go to the bathroom?? Craziness! When I want to go to the bathroom, I ---> take the huge, achingly painful step of actually *gasp* stepping away from my friends for five minutes (!!) and walking to the bathroom by myself (!!). Same with my guy friends. But my girl friends cannot stand to go to the bathroom by themselves...must have a pack of at least three others to hold their hand. Oi.
See, Shush knows what I'm talking about as far as the whole disappointed thing goes. It's so true. And Yay, pessimists - as I see them - are usually gloomy even in good situations, because they're afraid they're going to turn bad at any moment.

Oh. Well, I don't know any pessimists like that. They are able to enjoy themselves when things are good. They're just ready for the worst. When it happens, they aren't as dissappointed. No huge mental and emotional type problems happen to them because they're ready for it.

I consider myself an optimist, but I will admit when things go bad. Probably the biggest reason why I'm an optimist is because I live by Mike's Three Laws of Stuff.
Law #1: Stuff happens.
Law #2: Stuff always works out.
Law #3: Stuff will never work out the way you think it will.
I hold these laws to be some of life's truths. So based on this, I think that the best way to look at things is to just try and put a good face on it, cause it'll work out in the end, and to be ready for whatever life decides to throw at me, cause I don't know HOW it'll work out.
A golden spork for anyone who understood that. :D
YayGollum
05-18-2003, 11:42 PM
Of course I understood that! *starts a collection of understandable prizes* Those laws make all kinds of sense to me. I just like to remember the first one. Even after the stuff gets to the the third law, you gots to know that more stuff will happen. Expect it. Deal with it. Ack!

I liked it:D Especially the last part. It ALMOST never works out the way you planned it. But that`s really great. Gives space for imagination and surprise.
I don`t know if I`m an optimist or a pessimist. I just do whatever depends on me to get what I want. The rest is beyond my control. If it works good for me. If it doesn`t I`ll always have the wish to do something else. My brother has this Philosophy. He says that life is too small, too short and too unimportant to bother about it. I can`t totally relate to that. I think to deal with the bad stuff you must not take it seriously. And try to find the funny thing about it. Cause if you look at it from a different angle you`ll find something hilariously funny:)

That's how I see pessimist-tinged realists. ;) They see the good as good, but are always ready for the bad.
I understood all of that, HG. :D (Then again, I've heard that speech before from you. ;)) I have a tendency to rebel against the "Rules of Stuff". The first one is definitely true: Yes, stuff will happen. But stuff does not always work out! And sometimes stuff works the way you think it will, though most of the time it doesn't. Still.

That's a good strategy. Helps you cheer up. But there are some things that you just can't find a good angle to, no matter how hard you try. But...that's the pessimist in me speaking...

I disagree. There is always a good angle for everything, it just might not be one for you. Maybe it rains the day of a picnic. Well, the robins will have an easy time getting worms to eat, so it's good for the robins. That's how I get past some really bad things, I think about the good that it might bring to other people. It's the only way I keep from freaking out. Then there are some things that once you get past them, you thank goodness that you will never have to endure them again. Any time I get nostalgic about a certain time in my life, I always remind myself ot the bad things that I had to get through as well. Helps get me out of a funk. Not sure if any of that's particularly optimistic, it's just part of my hybrid philosophy.

It probably is better to find the good in things. That's the advice I would give to anyone who asked me about it. But for myself...I know I wouldn't follow my own advice. I would rather sink into despair for a day...week...month (depending on what's going on) or two, then lift myself up off the floor and force myself to move on. That's probably the hard way. I don't know why I do that to myself. I guess I want my grieving time.

Yikes! Sounds crazy to me. Sure, I've tried helping people out when something bad's happened to them. Usually just by pointing out the obvious and not coming down to their level of depression. Whoops! I just don't let things get to me. maybe I've just been lucky and something especially evil hasn't happened to me yet? oh well.

shush; you're welcome:)
eh, you know, greiving can be very refreshing....its like sleeping, except you can get work done while you're doing it, and if you do enough of it at once, then its a little hard 4 me to be mad 4 a while, for some wacky reason
ACK!!! MORE GOLDEN SPORKS!!! :D EEE!!
*also starts a collection with all her wacky prizes*
as 4 the stuff stuff; well, it depends on what you mean by "work out"
as 4 finding the good in things....well, it isn't hard 4 me 2 find it, its just hard 4 me to care.....I mean, when I'm sad, I'm sad, and I don't really care about anything else...

Ick. Grieving is supposed to be refreshing? Since when? That's just craziness. You gots to not worry about it. You can deal with something that's supposed to make you sad without crying about it all the time. That's just annoyingly self-centered.

Wait, Yay of all people is talking about being annoyingly self-centered? Pardon me while I go into fits of maniacal laughter. *goes away and comes back a few minutes later* All better. :D Actually, I see grief as something you have to push past. Wallowing in it just wastes time, why bother? Better to move on, accept it, all that stuff. Crying isn't particularly useful either and it's evil when something superly bad happens and you start cryi
