Outcast-type films? Dunno, really, but my favourite films go as so
The Fellowship Of The Ring
The Matrix
When Saturday Comes
The latter being a British film starring Sean Bean about a guy's rise from non-league football to scoring the winner against Man Utd in the FA Cup for Sheffield United. Of course, with lots of problems along the way. A thoroughly excellent film. And a bit of trivia - Bean has always been a Sheff Utd fan, he's now even on their Board Of Directors.

Well, I am a pretty big film buff, so I have lots of favorite movies, but I'll just list some of those that match my OUTCAST-ish side of my personality (Not counting FOTR, TTT, and ROTK, which I'm sure will be my all-time favorites.)
Valmont
Sunset Blvd.
Barton Fink
Wing Commander
Living in Oblivion
Requiem for a Dream
Lovely and Amazing
Bowling for Columbine
Frida
Gods and Monsters
Still Breathing
Impromptu
The 39 Steps (1930?)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (Had Christopher Lee in it)
Almost any adaptation of any novel by Thomas Hardy, George Elliot, or Jane Austen.
Metropolis (Anime, 2001)
Metropolis (Silent, 1925? With 1985 soundtrack)
Phantom of the Opera (Silent, 1925?)
LA Confidential
1994 Baker Street (TV movie)
The Piano
Outrageous Fortune
Movies I think are way overrated:
Harry Potter
Blair Witch Project
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Monty Python's Meaning of Life.
A Fish Called Wanda

Oh Dearest Mindy_O_Lluin! I think I love you!
Someone who has the same taste in well made movies as I.
especially Barton Fink. I still use the line "You're a sick &^%* Fink" when my friends suggest something stupid.
But tell me, have you ever seen Pi?

I judge movies as directly inproportional to what the critics say
Not a bad idea Dragon.
Of these movies I've seen lately (getting prepared for Oscars)
I'd like to be presumptuous and give MY own ratings, which probably contradict the Critics:
'The Hours' *
BLAH! Boring, wasted my money
'About Schmidt' *1/2
Boring except for last 5 minutes. My friend even wanted to leave early.
'Catch me if you can' **1/2
Sorta fun, but won't draw me for a second showing. (One interesting point is that Tom Hanks was SO transformed into his character, that you totally forget he is even in this movie.)
'Maid in Manhattan' ***
Very good. Modern day Cinderella
'Chicago' ***
Fun, if you like musicals and Chicago history. (I was born there).
'Far from Heaven' *1/2
So-so. I don't recommend.
'Bowling for Columbine' ****
Excellent and should win Documentary Academy award.
'Gangs of New York' ***1/2
Pretty good movie. Hope DD Lewis gets the acting award. He deserves it much more than Jack Nicholson, I think.
'Frida' ***
Very good, but kids won't care about it. Salma H. deserves the best female acting award but probably won't get it cause the Academy is stupid.
'Real Women have Curves' **1/2
Best Indie movie I've seen this year.
[edited in]:
'Two Weeks Notice' *
I can barely even give it a one star since I disliked it so badly.
The Two Towers *****
Best, most exciting, exquisite, emotional, thrilling roller-coaster ride of a movie this year. Every time I've seen one of those dumb, boring movies above, I regret that I didn't spend my money to see this one again, instead.
Ol'gaffer
01-21-2003, 02:03 PM
The Others ****
Brilliant suspence movie that slaps the 6th sense silly.
The Two Towers ****½
Not as great as FOTR but visually so epic that this cannot be ignored, not even by the academy.
One Hour Photo *****
Robin Williams gives his most chilling and best performance in the last 5 years, this movie gave me the willies to talk to nice old guys with white hair.
28 Days Later *****
Scary, real and undeniably brilliant, this movie is this milleniums "Exorxcist"
2 Weeks Notice *½
Another predictable romantic comedy starring Hugh "Grin" Grant and Sandra "I-do-chick-flicks" Bullock, this movie really doesn't throw you either way.
The Believer ****
Provocking, shocking, talkative and a sleeper hit that really got to me. The main actor deserves something for his achievement.
Those were some of the best movies that I saw in the year 2002.

'Two Weeks Notice' *
I can barely even give it a one star since I disliked it so badly. Bad, Bad, Bad, is all I can say.
I think that's why I liked 'Maid in Manhattan' - because I class these two together as light romantic comedy, but MiM was way way better than 2WN.

AAH! I forgot to insert a few from the list:
Spirited Away *****
The most beautiful animation that I've ever seen and the only one that even after numerous viewings still makes me laugh and cry.
Count of Monte Cristo ***½
Very good re-make of a very good book, cool swords and sword fights but the main actor (Jim Cavieziel) is terrible.
007 Die Another Day (½ of a star)
This was so bad. I can't remember ever wanting to walk away from the theater as I wanted to in this one. Bond hasn't aged well, and this new technology that was in this one was ****.
Austin Powers in Goldmember *
A stupid slap stick movie that expects the audience to laugh every time somebody in the movie farts.

Hey, Ol'gaffer - did you not see 'Metropolis'? (also out early this year) I've seen both and was blown away by the artistic animation in 'Metropolis' to the point that I could not appreciate 'Spirited Away' when I saw it. 'Metropolis' is the only other DVD I have bought besides FOTR.

Some Outcast movie recommendations:
Clockwork Orange- Disturbing, dark, violent, funny and thought provoking.
Taxi Driver- Violent, Sad and a classic.
Donnie Darko- Full on psycho.
Life of Brian- He just wants to be one of the gang and gets crucified for it.

Mm...good outcast movies...
Well, as far as the concept goes, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (yes, the Disney version) really brings out the feelings and trials of an outcast...I know it's Disney and aimed at kids, but it's got a good message, I thought anyway.
Umm...oh, I really wanted to see Spirited Away, it looked very interesting. Umm...oh yeah, Spider-Man! I know some people will roll their eyes here, but that was actually a very good movie! And Spidey was such an outcast before...and even after...he got his powers. It was a very well done movie. Oh yes, and I saw Daredevil two days ago...wondering what other people thought of that movie...very dark, not for the weak-stomached (very violent)...but some people thought it was pretty good. I would have liked it better if less people died. So, any reviews on it out there?
YayGollum
02-24-2003, 10:29 PM
Sure, Hunchback of Notre Dame was good. They even have a song all about Outcasts. Not bad. Anyways, I've heard two superly different things about Daredevil. One, that it's a chick flick. Two, that it was better than Spiderman. I haven't seen it. I'll probably wait for it to come out on video.

Ohmygoshness...I have to say that neither are true...in my opinion, anyway. It was sooooo violent...certainly not a chick flick! I do think that the love interest developed a little too quickly to be realistic...but it was much to angsty to be a chick flick. And as far as being better than Spider-Man...well, I think the plot in Spider-Man was a little better developed, same with the characters. But that's just my opinion. :)

Daredevil is not going to be out here in Finland for another month but I got to see it at a press review. I thought that Daredevil was so much better than Spider man. The movie was darker with little or barely no humour in it, and that was a good thing, I thought that Spiderman was spoiled by the childish humour and childrens antics in it, but with DD it was different. Even Ben Affleck was really good. And Kevin Smiths (Director of Mallrats and Dogma, to mention some) did a really funny Cameo for the movie, also look out for Stan Lee as the old guy who DD stops as a child from walking under a car. And in the credits some guy is credited as "Guy with pins in head" LOL!!!!
Wolfshead
03-03-2003, 08:02 PM
The Matrix. There is the Matrix, and the characters, Neo, Morpheus etc are no longer in it. So then, they are outcasts, cast out of the Matrix.
That just occured to me...
Kailita
03-03-2003, 08:03 PM
Yes, definitely less humor in DD than in Spider-Man. But the humor is a way of lessening the overwhelming darkness of the situations, which I guess some people like, but it just depresses me. So I liked Spidey's jokes. And that's how he was in the comics, too, he was always cracking those wry jokes. It's just his personality.
Lol, I saw Stan Lee in the movie, too! The old man behind the newspaper! That was so cool! :) And yeah, the credits were hilarious. Did they ever mention the old lady on the plane? "Choking old woman" perhaps? Heh...well, there's some humor for you, even though it's a bit twisted...
Ok, I won't give away anything more, heh. :)

I might have recommended "Talk to Her" but I hated the concept, and I think Almodovar is a sexist. That one was only a bit less repulsive than "Boxing Helena" so don't bother going to see it.

I`m sorry, but which one is the thread for movies? If you don`t mind I`ll post here until I find it:)
That`s funny cause you named some of my favorite movies of all times: Amelie, Fargo, Snatch (which is the funniest thing I`ve ever seen) and Edward ScissorsHands. I would add Fight club and Stealing Beauty by Bernardo Bertollucci.
Almodovar`s All about my mother was so much better than Talk to her. Actually the whole world is accusing him for being sexist. But I just don`t understand why. He loves women, all his movies are about us. The men are always some kind of freaks according to him. It`s funny. Cause nobody does that. Maybe he`s just proposing the idea that everything happens because of women:) That doesn`t make him sexist. At least women in his movies aren`t this 20year-old dolls with huge breasts and no brains at all;)

As a complete contradiction to the point of this thread, I will say The Lord Of The Rings. Not the decent one by that New Zealander, but the laughable one by Ralph Bakshi. I've had it on video for a while, and after reading the review of it on Flying Moose (http://flyingmoose.org/tolksarc/bakshi/bakshi.htm) again, I decided to go and watch it once more - just to laugh. Oh, and how I laughed, for the first half hour, and then it becomes depressing once again. There are just so many mistakes, badly done animations, plot holes and so on. I could list some of them, but I would get carried away, so here's one or two -
Whilst walking down the road on their way to Bree (with Merry dancing in front of them playing a lute... for some reason) the narrator explains Merry and Pippin have agreed to accompany Frodo and Sam to Bree. Then when Frodo finds out they know he intends to leave the Shire, he acts all cross! How could they have not known he was going to leave the Shire if they had agreed to go to Bree with him?!?
Gandalf and Frodo are in the Shire, walking past a river discussing the Ring. All of a sudden Gandalf reaches down and pulls Sam out of a bush! If it were in the garden that would be find, but what was the bumbling fool doing in a bush, nowhere near Bag End? Or do we not want to know? And then no explaination is given as to who Sam actually is!
And the Balrog wears slippers

You haven't been able to find the LOTR cartoon? Most video stores sell it now, with all the hype around the Jackson ones. I bought mine for £6 in HMV a few months ago. That's about $10. Seeing as I'm a nice fellow, here are a couple of links to it on Amazon.com (American seeing as you are of that persuasian).
The VHS version - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005MP5C/qid=1050878774/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/002-7793562-0462458?v=glance&s=video
DVD version - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005MP5B/qid=1050879058/sr=1-9/ref=sr_1_9/002-7793562-0462458?v=glance&s=dvd
Another thing which I found hilarious about it, was when they were deciding which way to go after being in Lorien. Sam pipes up with "I'm going with Mr Frodo". To which Aragorn replies, "Yes, Sam, I know". The way John Hurt said that was brilliant - you could almost add on the "And will you please stop telling me". Great!

The Bashki LOTR would be a complete insult if it weren't incredibly laughable. We rented is a while ago, just to see, and all of us just about died.
Of course, I still watch the animated Rankin-Bass version of RotK every once in a while- for purely nostolgic reasons, I watched it a lot when I was little. I do love Rankin-Bass' version of The Last Unicorn, though. One of my big comfort movies (second only to The Princess Bride).

Ned Kelly was a famous Aussie bushranger(outlaw) in the 1870's.
The police are very much the bad guys in the film. I don't know how historically accurate it is, but seeing our beloved blonde elf as a 19th century murdering horse thief was highly entertaining.
Ned Kelly is a kind of Robin Hood folk hero to a lot of people in Australia and like a lot of Aussie kids I was told by my parents that we were somehow related to some one in his gang.

Well with Ned it would more likely be "Men in tin cans"(he had some famous home made armour. Not real effective tho' cause when they arrested him he had about fifty bullet wounds).
BTW our beloved blonde elf got shot in the groin(ouch!!!)

They always twist the stories, make them idiotic. The only exception was <The Odyssey> (is the spelling correct?) TV movie a few years ago. I liked it, it was beautiful, true to the story to some level. The gods were amazing, especially Athena.
Same with disney. Have you seen the Heracles? It was disgusting. So I never watch cartoon movies based on something I love. that saves my nerve system from damages.
BTW, Yay, you should watch The Ice Age and then make comments. It was funny. Which is enough for me cause the its main purpose was to be funny:)

I agree with powersauce, Zoolander was one of the most idiotic movies I have ever seen, but because of that it's really hilariously funny. Ah, a gas fight as in these stupid male models spraying each other with gasoline at a gas station, sort of like a water gun fight, only about fifty billion times more dangerous and stupid. Sequels are on average better than the original, Toy Story 2 was way better than the first one and Return of the Jedi is the best Star Wars movie in my opinion.

I agree with that. I don`t get what`s funny about him. Anyway, a few days ago I saw The Experiment. It`s a german movie based on actual events that took part in 1971. That was quite impressive and a little bit depressing. But really unique. In short, they make an experiment: gather about 20 volunteers who randomly are devided into prisoners and guards. They were supposed to spent 14 days in closed location like a prison with certain rules. In real life they had to stop the experiment after 6 days cause it went out of control. After 36 hours one of the prisoners went crazy, the guards did some really bad things. Actually the most frightening thing about that was that the people were absolutely normal, average. In the movie they continued the story. What would have happened if the experiment wasn`t stopped.

That's pretty spooky. But you can see that in everyday global events and even in this forum. People are so easily led by the nose to follow instigators on one side or another.
We did an experiment sort of like that in a race relations class.
About 6 or 7 people at a table were assigned roles (usually opposite of their nature), such as 'rebel', 'appeaser', 'leader', 'shy', 'follower', 'outcast', etc. then we had to treat the persons like that for the next hour. It's amazing how one's personality and ability can change so quickly based on how others treat you.

That must have been interesting. I have read a theory: the idea was that all emotions and feelings and thoughts experienced by people are just programmed. Not by someone, but by nature. It`s like a certain situation creates a certain emotion. Which makes people quite predictable. And that`s why you can`t possibly break that borders. Everybody has the same reaction in similar situations. I liked that idea cause maybe in some way it reduces the responsobility for one`s life:)

That may be, as the hypothalamus part of the brain stores that stuff from early evolution, but still, the emotions brought most often to the forefront of the consciousness in a small impressionable child, may be the ones most indelible, thereby, biasing their self-image in the long run.

emotions are not only subjective for the person experiencing them, but also neurologically based from the levels of neurotransmitters within our brain...these pass from site to site from axon and dendrites in a quasi electrical storm that utilizes sodium (Na) and potassium (K).
In a different yet equally relevant discussion involving emotions is related to behavioral psychology
A + B = C
A = being the antecedent...a triggering event that occurs
followed by B...a behavior that it produces to
C...a consequence or a result with both negative but hopefully positive results.

I'm off to see X2 this afternoon- will report back. Really I'm only going to see Wolverine (I never did read any of the comic books, but X-Men was one of the animated series I used to watch every Saturday morning at the ungodly hour of 5am- after The Fantastic Four and Ironman, and before Spiderman and Batman; Batman being my favorite).
Kailita

Ooh...funness, Rhi, tell us all how it is. I've always loved the X-Men. Superheros in general rock my socks - but my favorites, in order, have always been Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Batman. The first two are Marvel...Marvel characters always seem to have a lot more inner conflict, more angst, which I love. :D But Batman's also incredibly cool, especially because he doesn't even have any super powers, he just has to use his wits and all his cool little gadgets. Never could stand Superman. Way too powerful, way too popular. Ick. Anyway, have fun at the movie. :)
My brothers and I are also going to see a movie today (since it's a rainy Saturday and there's nothing to do), but we're going to see Holes, which has been a topic already discussed here. So yes...going to go see it, then give my Outcast opinion on it as a movie and it as opposed to the book. :)
Also, Annushka, I have discovered from reliable sources (my friend in English class ;)) that Holes is written by Louis Sachar. :) Hope that helps some.

Superman, ICK, Rhian hates Superman. Ugh. But she loves Batman. Batman is the coolest.
X2 was very cool. I was relieved by the total lack of Matrix-esque fight scenes (thank you God!), of which there were many; lots and lots of nameless guys in uniforms died, mostly on the claws of Wolverine, which I have to confess kind of bothered me- action-movie lover I may be, but commandos acting under orders getting knocked off by the good guys isn't a good thing- but that's a military brat being sensitive. Ian McKellan was very good, Patrick Stewart was very good, Hugh Jackman was very good (mm, Wolverine...) and in general it was very good, only I strongly dislike Storm and Jean's haircuts.

I saw X2 also, I'm not even going to say why it was/how good it was, if you even have a splinter of X-men liking in you, GO SEE IT
my friend also saw it, and she had on little complaint, she said she didn't like how they never once mentioned lady deathstrikes NAME, but it doesn't matter, because it wasn't important to the story line...... now, get out of your incredibly comfy spinning leather desk chairs and go to a good theater, get a mr Pibb and a pickle (or popcorn, your choice) AND GO SEE IT!!!!!

Now Billy madision with Adam sandler is a movie 2 worshipp!:D :D
Billy's father isn't an alocholic. He's an out of work miner during the miner's strike in Northern England.
Here's the synopsis.
Billy is a young boy who lives in the County Durham in Northern England, near Scotland, with his father, his older brother Tony, and his grandmother. His grandmother has alzheimers or something and needs constant attention.
Billy's brother and his dad are both miners and are both on strike so times are hard. Billy goes to afterschool boxing lessons, but he's "**** at boxin'." ;)
Anyway, one day he's made to stay after to practice (because he's ****) and he discovers a ballet class. :) And he loves it and continues to go without telling his father.
It's about how he struggles to continue doing ballet even though his father is against it when he finds out. And it has touching moments about how hard it is for Billy to grow up without his mum. (I cried when Billy and his ballet teacher read that letter...) And it's just a touching story about following your dreams.
It's not a chick flick though it may sound like it. And there are a few twists as far as Billy's father goes. :) But he's not an alcoholic by any means. He's just an out of work miner.
Anyway, Snaga and my dad both love it. :)

I probably will end up watching that X-Men movie. What's so cool about Wolverine anyways? He's boring. How was Nightcrawler? :D Anyways, Yay for the summary of that Billy Eliot movie! Sounds like something I could care less about. Not funny or epic at all. oh well.

He has claws that come out of his hands. He is also bad-tempered and angst-filled with a mysterious past.
How was Nightcrawler?
He had big teeth. Made him look kind of weird. Mostly he talked with a German accent and muttered prayers, when he wasn't darting aroung the air.

I absolutely LOVE Alan Camming (Nightcrawler). He`s so funny. His smile is the most hilarious thing I`ve ever seen. I will definetely go see X2 though the 1st one wasn`t as good as I expected.

What's weird with Storm's haircut? But I do agree that Jean's hair was better in the first movie.

No, no, that's a very good point and I completely agree. (Or at least, I think I would once I see the movie... ) I think it just adds to the conflict factor and shows that the defining lines between the "good guys" and "bad guys" would be a lot grayer if these comic book situations happened in real life.

Thank you. I was about to jump into a long spiel to defend my third favorite character out of the X-group, but Rhi saved me the trouble in two sentences. Short and sweet. My favorite X character was always Rogue...even though, I dunno, I feel like they kind of messed her around in the first movie...I miss the strong southern accent. As much as I usually hate those, it sounded sweet on Rogue. And then after her, I love Nightcrawler. Ooh...and Beast, too. I was sad that they didn't put Beast in the movie.
Onto Holes: Well, it was a lot better than I expected. Very true to the book, very well done. I thought the casting was also done very well. Zero was adorable. I don't see what's so bad about Shia LeBeouf (or however you spell his name). He was the perfect choice for a kind of bumbling, unlucky kid. And the end of the movie, where everything comes together, was great. I would definitely recommend reading the book first...the movie will make more sense, then. But still, they did a great job with it, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm glad someone else thinks so- I know it's there for that (to add to the conflict factor), but still I wish they weren't killing them- couldn't they disarm them, or something?- because at no point did I get the feeling that these commando guys were in on the Big Evil Scheme. They were just guys following orders. That's sad.
Nightcrawler and Beast are both very cool- though is it just me and my faulty memory, or was Nightcrawler more...erm, sophisticated in some of the comics? (I never read much of the comics, mind you, I mostly know the characters through second hand knowledge and the animated series). But I seem to remember that Nightcrawler fenced, which, since I was fencing at the time, was beyond cool. And I adored Beast. Wonderful character.
I would go see Holes, but it's Not Showing Here.

Well, I don't claim to be a huge expert on X-Men type stuffs. I just remember that Nightcrawler was definitely the coolest. Anyways, what's so cool about claws and having an evil temper and a mysterious past and being full of angst? There are way too many characters like that. Achingly typical. oh well. Yes, it is. Fear and ignorance will always build up to that kind of a climax. It really is sad.
Nightcrawler fenced? I don't remember that, but if it was true, that's awesome! :D I love Beast's logical but compassionate approach. There's one episode in the animated shows when he's been captured and he's reading the book Animal Farm in his cell. (Animal Farm = really deep, famous book by some famous guy.) And the guards come by and start making fun of him for reading what they think is a baby book. Beast, being Beast, just adjusts his glasses and ignores them.

No Cyclops bashing now. He's not my favorite character, but you have to give him some credit. He has to be the second leader. He's responsible, very caring, and noble. He's got it rougher than people think. Yes, there are a lot of characters like him, but he still deserves some credit.

I have a very clear mental image of a black and white line drawing out of this book about X-Men (listing them and their powers and things) that my fencing coach's youngest son had, of Nightcrawler with an epee in each hand and one in his tail. It was very cool. I wish I had seen that animated episode!

Wolverine ---> How is the guy not typical? How many tortured and reluctant type heroes can you think of? I can think of lots.
Cyclops ---> You are crazy if you can enjoy this character. The only reason I can think of would be because he might seem admirable. Boring.
Beast and Gambit and Nightcrawler and some guy that I barely got to get to know are all the coolest.

It's a very famous novel (intended for YAs, but enjoyed by many adults), in which a young girl, who has lived in India all her life (her father is British military- this is during the hey-day of the British Empire) is sent to leave with a mysterious hunch-back after her parents die in a plague. Complicated plot, but she goes from being a spoiled awful brat to a nice person.

WITHOUT A CLUE. (Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley)
Also, 'Fear of a Black Hat' (Like Spinal Tap with Black Musicians - but 10 times more hilarious.)
Also, ZARDOZ. Nobody else gives it any credit but I think it's seriously prophetic.
Just today I saw 'Identity'. really good. I bet some outcasts will be able to appreciate it!

Monsters Inc. wasn't that bad. It wasn't as achingly hilarious as some people tried to tell me it was. That chameleon guy was cool, though. What are these Without A Clue, Fear Of A Black Hat, Spinal Tap with Black Musicians, Zardoz, and Identity type things about?
Mindy_O_Lluin
05-11-2003, 03:27 AM
I'm going to assume that you are seriously asking for info, Yay.
Without a Clue is a hilarious Sherlock Holmes spoof where Ben Kingsley plays Watson (in the Victorian time period), who is really the brains behind the duo, and THE writer of the stories, and he hired Michael Caine, a drunken out-of-work actor, to play the public persona of Sherlock. It's it's own story, but it hits on a lot of the sherlockiana.
Fear of a Black Hat is a parody of a group of musicians (black) in the same way as Spinal Tap was a parody of a white rock group. But it was much funnier. I never really liked Spinal Tap.
Zardoz was a futuristic movie with Sean Connery where the super elite, rich intellectuals lived under a bubble environment where everything is privleged and perfect-tho a bit boring, but they left the 97% non-elite humans on the outside of the bubble to fend for themselves in the violent, wasted, overpoulated, degraded environment. The same kind of separation of the classes has been alluded to in other Sci-fi movies and shows, such as the Planet of the Apes and Star Trek TNG. But this one was explicit.
'Identity' is a movie out in theaters right now. The critics all loved it as a 'horror' movie with an intelligent plot. (though you have to work your mind a little bit to 'get it'.) It has John Cusack in it. I highly recommend it. I would categorize it along with 'Memento' from a couple of years back.
YayGollum

Of course I was seriously asking for information! Anyways, what's Memento about? sorry for not knowing any of the names of actors you wrote down. Except that Sean Connery guy. Since my evil mom lady loves him so much. oh well. I might just find that Sherlock Holmes movie. Yay!

Memento, (like Identity), is a murder mystery thriller where the outcome is centered around a character's psychological defect - in this case, a total loss of his short-term-memory capacity.
(I won't give away the psycho-problem in Identity, in case you want to go and see it.)
(P.S. The actors might be more recognizable if I would spell their names right! I went back and corrected them. Did you not see Cider House Rules and Ghandi? Or, any of the thousand movies John Cusack has been in?)

Guy Pierce is from Australia. He was in the LA Confidential and The Time Machine. The Creeper thing is a horror about sister and a brother who meet this terrible creater on the road who is awakened every 16 (I might be wrong) year and eats people`s organs to keep himself alive:D But he doesn`t eat everybody. Only people who have something special. Anyway, it wasn`t as stupid as sounds:D

What was the message: look at us, we managed to build the most liberal country through violence and disorder??? Anyway, it was a bit (well not a bit) long and extremely violent. Yeah, and it was about Irish people whom nobody could understand because of their accent:D

Just a few things.
Jeepers Creepers, wasn't it so that the monster was after the person who had somekind of special blood? And I thought that it was a cool, but quite depressing horror movie.
As for Gangs, I didn't find it at all confusing and I never thought that point was to show that they built a city of war, more likely, I found it to be a story of how ignorant the people were back then an how ignorance and intolerance can't bring anything but pain and destruction. The violence was in this case justified since it was portrayed in an extremely realistic fashion and not the hollywood style fighting fashion.

Yep. That about covers it. And I have seen about 90% of them (I've been a fan ever since 'A Sure Thing')
I love the fact that he gets his sister (and other family members) into most of his films. And, some kind of 'message', too. And he only plays as (ultimately) honest and 'galant' characters towards his girlfriends in his movies. He has surprising power to have control over his career choices, and from such a young age.
Oh yeah, you reminded me of one of my favorite animated movies - Anastasia - where he played divinely against Meg Ryan. I LOVED that movie, and it's been highly overlooked. (The artsy animation and the music were fabulous!)

I think I`v already told about it here. It was about this experiment they took back in 1971 locking people in a place like a prison. Some of them as prisoners, others as guards. The best is that it really happened. It`s just in the movie they let hte things go and showed what possibly would have happened if the experiment wasn`t stoped.
I love Joan Cusack. even more than her brother. She`s so ironical and funny. Have anyone seen Working Girl where she playes the best friend? Or In and Out?

Oh definitely, yes. I love watching Working Girl every time it's on TV (Evil Sigorney Weaver!) and Joan Cusack was the best part of In and Out.
(He, he, connecting John Cusack within six degrees to the LOTRs ----- 'Hi Fidelity' was the first movie where I became aware of Jack Black, who later did that great MTV awards spoof of Elrond's Council)

Jack Black is the actor, right? With that Buffy actress. I don`t remember her name. That was really funny.
Back to Joan Cusack. I love her cause she`s not afraid to be unpretty or funny or make fun of herself. The part in Working girl, when Harrison Ford comes along and she has to pretend to be the secretary and asks him with this hilarious smile on her face - can i get you something: coffee, tea, me??

Yeah, that's right. I think that was Sarah Michelle Gellar(?) But who cares - Jack Black is the funniest guy in the world, so no one else can be noticed when he is there. :D

Oh, yeah. Whoops! Yes, you already talked about the The Experiment movie, scary Annushka person. Anyways, what's that Working Girl thing about? And what's so bad about that Weaver lady? Anybody ever seen Galaxy Quest? :D

Yes! We love Galaxy Quest. That's an awesome movie.

I saw Galaxy Quest, and it was pretty good, but I liked 'Trekkies' better. (a documentary)
Yay, you need to get to the video store and catch up on your movie watching! If you cannot drag yourself from the computer, then just rent DVDs and PLAY them on your computer. That way you can stop the movie and talk to us right in the middle of watching.
:D

Yay really needs to do that:) But maybe his <unawareness> is just a trick to make us keep talking about movies instead of something else:D
I haven`t seen Galaxy quest. It`s a comedy right? But Sigorney Weaver is really good. She doesn`t have that typical beauty which makes her even more interesting.
And Sarah Michele Gellar, how could I forget. She`s really annoying. Her voice and manners.

Well, the unawareness isn't a trick, but yes, I am tossing it in here to keep you on topic. sorry about that. Not a huge deal. Anyways, I wouldn't know if this evil computer I have would let me do the little DVD thing. oh well. I'm technologically allergic.

Tootsie is a great movie.
My brother and I rented 8 movies the other night- I got The Odd Couple, which was great fun, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? which was also great fun, and something else that I forget, and Much Ado About Nothing, which I loved. I loved the setting and the way it was filmed and all the principal actors (except for Keanu Reeves who will, sadly, never a be a real boy), and in general that it was wonderful.

My sister and I watched 'The Man Who Would be King' the other day. It was wonderful. Sean Connery and Michael Caine (I think?) were great.

Do you people know what would be cool? It would be cool if you people would say what these movies were about. The people that know nothing about them might suddenly become interested and watch the things all because of you, then you would get to feel achingly good about yourself for tossing some joy at somebody's life.
Rhiannon
06-17-2003, 04:41 AM
Well, The Man Who Would Be King is based on Rudyard Kipling's most famous short story, and begins in India during the reign of the British Empire. Danny (Sean Connery) and Peachy (Caine) are ex-British military men out to make their fortunes. They decide to go off to this other country across the mountains, taking guns with them, and setting themselves up as kings. This plan works splendidly, and everything goes well, and then the locals decide that Danny is really a god (the son of Alexander the Great, to be exact). To say more would be to let out the plot bunnies, but it acting it wonderful, and Danny and Peachy are screamingly funny.

Got it. Yay for that. That movie sounds crazy, though. Argh! What's so bad about letting out the scary things known as plot bunnies? Looks like you already said what the plot was. Or are plot bunnies achingly spoiling plot twists or something? I have no idea. oh well.

Has anyone seen The Virgin Suicides wiht Kirsten Dunst and Josh HArtnett? I watched it yesterday it's really different. SOmehwhat disturbing, but moving all the same. I reccomend.

I thought it was disturbing, too. I am not sure if I enjoyed it. Perhaps it made some helpful points for parents, but twas still hard to watch.
I prefer Kirsten Dunst in 'Bring it On', or other cutsie movies.
You know that next-door-neighbor guy in 'American Beauty'? I don't want to live my life depressive like him, so I immerse myself in the 'fluff' of life.

Anybody seen The Hulk? is it any good? Any body seen Eric Bana's earlier film "Chopper"? that was a great film, if you like scarey crime type films.

That's them.
I've only seen the preview of The Hulk, but I don't think it looks good at all- the Hulk looks way to CG. It messes things up for me.

Hooray for Eric Bana- he's an aussie! There's this crazy substitute teacher at my school who solemly swears that she's friends with the real chopper reed, the fulla that chopper is based on. she reckons she was a prison guard and tell us vile stories. We know that's she's made it up due to some lighthearted investigating. Crazy woman. I haven't seen the hulk and i'm not really planning to..:o

I think Hulk isn`t out yet. Anyway I saw the preview too. And they didn`t show him properly. The director is good though. Ang Lee. He directed The Ice storm and Crauching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Has anyone seen them? Especially

Plate o' shrimp. CT,HD was just being talked about at my other forum.
I loved it, except for the flying thing. That bugged me something awful.

I wonder what happened with my post:confused:
Anyway, CT,HD is certainly very beatiful, but I still can`t figure out what was the point. Maybe somebody can explain it to me.
And the Ice Storm is one of the best movies I`ve ever seen. It`s starring Sigourney Weaver, Kevin Klein, our beloved Elijah Wood, Tobey Maguaer and Christina Ricci. It`s about two families in 70`s who are really messed up. Well, it`s difficult to tell about. It doesn`t have a decent story-line. But it`s a very clever movie. And leaves very strange feelings.

haha!!! actually, no, yay, its a kung-fu--y movie
there's a really special, cool sword that gets stolen from an important person, and these 2 awesome heros/warrior peoples are trying to get it back from the mislead person taht stole it, and there are all these old rivalries that complicate it, but the scenery and stuff is really pretty, but, they do do the flying jumpity thing....if that bugs u, that is...

Crazy. So CT HD is about a fight over....a sword?! Never really had a fine appreciation for fights over ancestral relics, however great they may be. Especially if they don't do anything cool. Must be why I never got interested in the whole "King Arthur" stuff. I'm guess there's no funny weaselly sidekick, no fun bad guy? Very serious probably.

OK Yay. Chopper is a semi-fictionalised account of the life and crimes of one Mark"Chopper"Read. He was a very wacky bad guy criminal who used to make a living by standing over drug dealers and armed robbers with a shot gun.
Eric Bana plays Chopper and is brilliant. He is so much like the real guy its scarey.
Its been a long time since I saw it so I can't give away much more than that except that the movie pretty much covers most aspects of this crazy bloke's life on the run. Some unexpected laughs thrown in there too.
I highly reccommend it. Two thumbs up.

I didn't think that the Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon movie was especially evil. oh well. Not a comedy, but plenty of movies can be good without a joke every two seconds. Anyways, that Chopper movie sounds scary. How entertaining can that be? Especially for the people that aren't looking for this guy's biography? oh well. Maybe the guy is just achingly entertaining to listen to.

Chopper was on the TV here the other night. I'd forgotten how violent it is. I think it is interesting to see a movie about the criminal underworld of somewhere other than New York or L.A.
And yes he is a very funny character. There is one scene where he shoots this drug dealer because he won't cough up any cash, and then he feels sorry for him and drives him to the h
