Have any of you sent a reply or message to them yet? I think it might be interesting if we got the moderators here to send them a strongly worded yet apropriate e-mail about why the name "The Two Towers" has absolutely nothing to do with sept 11...

If TTT had come out on September 11th I would understand you making a site and all protesting, but what has tolkien to do with Bin Laden?

Thank you Two Towers Protest for making the rest of us humanitarians look like manuscript circus freaks... We're not going to get anywhere in the human race if we just try to forget everything because it's "sensitive," and frankly, they are pretty stupid to miss the whole point that the book was written even before the WTC existed.

So now so we can fit their little PC "newspeak" we have to rename a classic book? I've got an idea... NO!

Several of our members were already successful at making 20th Century Fox delay the movie "Phone Booth" due to the Maryland sniper attacks.
Um, I wouldn't boast about that...

Yeah, I'd have a laugh if I could see the posts that people made in defense of TTT. I'm sure they put some delightful sarcasm in...

We believe that Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema's actions are in fact hate speech. The movie is intentionally being named The Two Towers in order to capitalize on the tragedy of September 11. Clearly, you cannot deny the fact that this falls under hate speech. We believe that if they will not willingly change the name, the government should step in to stop the movie's production or to force a name change.

Yeah thats right it was named Two Towers specifically for that purpose. Even though the first previews that showed that name were BEFORE september 11th and they were simply keeping a name from LONG before. Also the Government stepping in would in fact violate the Constitution.

After a close examination of their website, I have come to the following conclusions.

1. The hyperlink to the petition is not functional and leads to a blind google/Alta vista search engine; I must conclude that this petition is fraudulent.

2. Nowhere on the site is there a link to read responses posted to said petition (either positive or negative). Therefore, one must conclude that there are either no responses to this organizations petition: or all responses have been negative and thereby a detriment to the aims of this group.

3. Nowhere in their FAQ section is any statement regarding any actual benefit or service rendered to either the families or survivors of the Sept 11 attack. This leads one to believe that this group is more concerned with getting media coverage and publicity than doing any real good.

All in all, I would have to say that this is nothing more than a poor attempt to grab some undeserved attention by playing off the sympathies of others. This is not even a case of over-active political correctness; but simply a cheap stunt meant to manipulate those susceptible to such action.
The best thing we can do to combat this type of asinine behavior is to recognize it for what it is.

Pointing and laughing out loud works too.

Just my two cents.

Good god, what is wrong with these people? They should really use their leisure time for more constructive and sensible activities.
I tried to leave a comment but I didn't see any links to a comment page or something. I wonder why.:p

I think all movie rolls of TTT should be immedialtely destroyed and a new film made: The Couple of Tall Evil-Maia-Infested Structures. Or just leave the title blank. The film would be three hours of perfectly PC blank tape.

I totally agree with you guys, I wonder if they took time to realize that the name of the movie came from the book that its based off of??

The real irony of all this is that Tolkien never really liked that title. It sounds cool, but makes little sense.

Something like this crops up once in a while. First there was that petition, now this. People find them, they get brought up, discussed for a while, then forgotten about. The a couple of months later, someone brings it up again. But, I haven't seen this site before.

There was a petition http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?twotower&1 but in the last couple of weeks, it has been removed. There were thousands of signatures of on it, but I would estimate that 98% (seriously), were just attacking the reasoning behind the petition. It never had any real chance of succeeding.

You've got to wonder about these people. Say, for example, they're being serious, and they find the title distressing because they are reminded about Sept 11th. Why then, do they set up a website and an organisation to campaign about it? I mean, they'll only be reminded about their grief in everything they do. You'd think it would be much easier for them just to ignore it?

Anyway. The Two Towers was written 50 years ago, before the plans for the WTC had even begun! The film went into production before the disaster. And did anyone call the WTC, The Two Towers? I was always under the impression they were called The Twin Towers or the WTC.

Peter Jackson's response to this whole thing was to say that even if he could change the name, the fans would kill him. So, he certainly wasn't going to change it.

So, my conclusion is that we make sure that the Twin Towers are renamed to something like The Big Tall Buildings Where People Traded. So no one is reminded about the film. On the other hand, we could just ignore these people that are obviously very narrow-minded.

Oh, and if anyone that emailed them gets a reply, post it here for us all to chortle at :)

I will admit, I never knew the names of the other two books before 9/11. All I knew was the first one was called "The Fellowship of the Rings" and that was it.

I kinda had this creepy feeling reading the title to "The Two Towers" after the fact, because I went "Oh my word, did Tolkein like, predict this like Nostradamus is said to have?"

And then I hid under my blankie. ;) But I never thought there was an attempt to leech off of the disaster.

I just sent them a email. I don't understand people like that. Did they ever think that maybe PJ named the movie "The Two Towers" because that is what the book is called, and not capitalize on the tragedy on 9/11??

Oh well, as Dr. Ransom says, "There are pinheads everywhere."

Tolkien wrote His books b4 the WTC were ever built so he never knew that was going to happen , and PJ just followed Tolkiens titles for his movies. no harm done, and u can't change the name of a classic!

This reminds me of an old Hollywood legend.

When the Marx Brothers began filming on the movie A Night in Casablanca, they recieved word that Warner Brother's studio had threatened to sue for copyright infringment for using the word Casablanca in their title. Warner Brother's had released Casablanca earlier that year.

The solve the problem, Groucho threatened to countersue Warner Studios for using the word Brother's.

Warner Studios quickly dropped their suit.

I don't see why people go at each other just because they put the same name in a title, I mean its not like New York owns the phrase "The Two Towers", and its not like Warner Bro's owns the word "Casablanca"

*viens start to pop out on neck*

What is this world coming to?!?!?!?!

I'm gonna sue ya!
I'm gonna sue ya!
Gonna sue ya!
Gonna sue ya!
Gonna su-u-ue ya!

That's what it's coming to. The chance for a quick buck from some sort of damage. Pretty soon, when the word "lawsuit" is spoken, it's like a little boy crying "wolf." The important suits are disregarded as another attempt to whine about not getting your way. You should talk to my Business Law teacher about some of the wierdos out there. People will sue for about $5.00 not realizing that lawyer's fees are far beyond that.
