View Full Version : What is Elronds problem?

I just want to know, does anyone else think Elrond comes off as an incredibly arrogant jerk in the movie? He doesn't like the dwarves, and his comments on men just stunned me. Elrond seems to hold all other races in contempt, and while the council was supposed to be a debate between the free peoples about what to do with it, it seems Elrond is acting like a bartender at closing time "You don't have to go home but you can't stay here".
This is my opinion of him and to a lesser extent all the elves (except that dreamy legolas:rolleyes: ) I just wonder if I am alone in this.

What is Elrond supposed to say, "It's too bad that Isildur didn't throw the ring into Mount Doom when I TOLD him to, but you guys can stay here and get all of us elves killed anyway"?

I suspect elves have long memories.

No, but he is suppossed to be one of the wisest beings of middle earth, so how can he blame all men for what Isuldur did not do a few thousand years before? He seemed to know its evil right away, so for the greater good he could have chucked Isuldur into the fire, since he did not, part of the blame lies with him.

I said something like this elsewhere but I don't know were it went:

Even though Elrond in the book did not come off this way, it is not unheard of for old wise elves to have a dislike for other races.
In a way this adds to the similarities to Beren and Luthien that we find in the movie. Luthien's father looked down at men, he wouldn't allow them into his realm even though they had done no wrong. He was especially disgusted when he learned that a man loved his daughter, so he sent the man on a quest that was sure to get him killed. But Luthien helped Beren in the quest and Thingol was all impressed so he changed his attitude about Beren.

But I would like to have seen an Elrond that is more like the one in the book, and less like Thingol.

but if Elrond "chucked" isildur into the fires then you can say goodbye to Elves and Men being in alliances and there would have been worse battles etc, you get my point!

It makes some sense, but that would have made for a short book.

By the way, I do agree that Elrond is a bit rough in the movies, but I would guess that is because PJ believed he needed to have some conflict in the Aragorn - Arwen thread to balance all of the mushy stuff.

Don't forget that Elrond chucking Isildur into the fire would be the same thing as chucking the ring into the fire. We know the One Ring can effect someone without that person actually touching it.

With that in mind, remember that no one can willfulling destroy the One Ring.

Therefore, I say, Elrond just could not have done it.

Maybe Elrond was irked because he looked into Galadriel's Mirror and saw that his twin from another dimension would not be able to get Morpheus to give him the access codes to the Zion mainframe! ;)

Elrond takes some responsibility for the ring not being destroyed in the first place, and if he seems a little arrogant and to the point, it is because he wants the job to be done right this time. He is wise, but he has unfinished business to take care of, and wants everyone to do the job correctly.
