You can read about the runes in the appendix of Lotr. They are an alphabetical system, though, not an ideographical one.

Go to THIS SITE (http://ring-lord.tripod.com/ringlord.html) and click on ALPHABETS. You will find many useful links.

Yes, Gandalf has his own rune: but it's just his initial, G.

Rhunes were falling out of use, I believe, so he was probably the only one in that area who was using it. However, if one had wanted to use the G rhune to write with Gandalf probably couldn't sue them for copyright infraction.

It would be like if you searched up the S or whatever your real name begins with in ancient babalonian letters and started signing it... though not quite that drastic... Maybe if you started signing in Greek.

It would be individual, but I wouldn't call it yours.

Some of Gandalf's fireworks had his initial letter in runic and some in Tengwar. If you want S (for Spidr) in Greek, use a sigma (like a letter M fallen over to the left) which can be found in the Symbol font. If you invent an entirely different "rune" that is not part of an alphabet, then it is not a rune at all, but a logo. There's no reason why you can't invent your own logo. Tolkien did.

Good luck and tell us how it turns out if you decide to do it...

I have invented my own alphabet, and Cir has one too... There used to be a thread on writers guild called "Languages" where he'd posted a lot of attachments, but it was eaten up when the guild crashed.
