View Full Version : ROTK TC longer than 3 hrs?
It's good to know that PJ may not be limiting himself to the 3 hour time limit for ROTK.

"It might be much longer," says Elijah Wood, who plays Frodo Baggins, indicating that the last journey, "The Return of the King," will be inching toward the 3-1/2-hour mark.
"It will be as long as it needs to be," says director Peter Jackson, who is busy editing the film right now.
Who knows what PJ means by "as long as it needs to be" though. Maybe it "needs to be" 3 hours for commercial reasons like the last two...
I think if it's 3 hours like FOTR and TTT, it'll just be either too jam packed of action to have any nice character drama or too much stuff will be cut, so this is encouraging news.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo, on reading that im all excited and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, im like how i felt on the night when i saw TTT for the first time, ITS NOT FAIR!!!

Yes, it is encouraging. After seeing TTT one of biggest concerns was that TTT left off at such an early point that ROTK would end up having a lot of stuff cut, or too rushed. I think they could easily get away with a 3.5 hour movie... maybe then we'll get a RotK EE that is 4 hours. :D

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I really do hope
RoTK is as long as it needs to be. Its the final film, and there is a lot that still needs to happen, and I don't know how/if they could do it all in 3 hours.

More than 3 hours would indeed be rather cool, but Jackson will have problems getting it past the bosses in New Line. 3 hours is really the maximum a film that's going to be in the cinema can be. Maybe us Tolkien fanatics could cope with it, and given that most of us are still young, we can manage to sit down for 3 and a half hours. But, at the end off TTT my ass had gone numb, and I heard various other people muttering the same thing. Plus, some older people are not in too good a shape and couldn't sit down for that long. And what about all those smokers? 3 - 4 hours without a fag...
Basically, 3 hours + would be good, but I don't think he will persuade New Line to give him any more than maybe 3 and a half hours. The EE will be a cracker though!
Wood: "I do have the ring and I keep it in my office. In fact, I haven't seen it for awhile. I wonder what happened to that ring!" Well, my sources tell me a small, slimy green creature was recently seen hanging around the Wood residence ;)

Videos and DVDs: The Ten Commandments is 219 minutes long. Gone With The Wind, 222. Doctor Zhivago, 197. Not sure how long the theatrical releases were, though Ten Commandments had to be pretty long, and of course they had those "Intermissions" way back then. Lawrence of Arabia Director's Cut clocks in at 221 minutes on video and DVD, thought I think I read that the original release was at least 3 hours long.
I say, if ROTK is to be 4 hours, bring it on! There is a lot of ground to cover, seeing where the film TTT left off compared to the book.

That would be nice, however I'd like an intermission. It's hard sitting for 3+ hrs in the same seat w/o sleeping and when you stand up everyone grumbles.

I think it will definitely be longer, especially since they never added Shelob to TTT, thus saving it for ROTK. And since it is the final movie (NO!) they will probably want to make it as good as they can however and how long it needs to be.

Argh, I'll have to take two restroom breaks, and may miss a major scene! 3 and a half hours would be cool, but it may cut down on earnings... Oh, well, I can endure 3 and a half hours!

I certainly hope that PJ disregards the fact that it will not earn as much money for the fact that in order to bring finality to Tolkien's great masterpiece the movie really has got to be more than three hours long.

I dont see how it cant be more than 3 hours long. There's still the Paths of the Dead, Shelobs Lair, Pelennor Fields, introducing Minas Tirith, the march to the black gate, and the whole thing with the capturing of Frodo. Plus there are going to be 2 different storylines that need to be followed. How's PJ going to fit all of that into a RotK 3 hours or less without cutting some major parts of the book?
