I was having a look around on Amazon and came accross a book called 'The Atlas of Tolkien's Middle Earth" by Karen Wynn Fonstad.
Does anybody here own this, or have read it and have opinions on it before I consider getting it?

I have it. It's absolutely fabulous. When you're reading The Hobbit or LotR, you can really get a much better idea of everything, and tie it all together even more than Tolkien did. I strongly suggest you get it!

Really? Well this leads me to the question of what sort of content it has. Maps, obviously :p but how many, what sort and so on..
Sorry, I just get a bit paranoid about buying books I can't flip through and get a feel for.
Forums are so useful..

Buy it, you won't regret it... it has maps for everything Tolkien! Sil, lotr, hobbit, vegetation, population, climates, etc etc etc! Plus, it has troop numbers for all the battles in lotr, very useful! Other than using it to look up stuff, I like to keep it by me when I read lotr, and follow along with the story in the maps.

I concurr. I got it for Christmas, and it is truely awesome. One caveat, though. I thought I read somewhere that it is very "interpretive" and not "definitive."

Besides maps; the movements of armys, troops and individuals in the different battles is really cool to see drawn out.
