View Full Version : A question about the Special Editions

I have a question about the differences between the special edition of the DVD and the Collectors edition. My understanding was that both sets contain exactly the same extended version, with exactly the same additional 30 minutes of restored footage. Now I have recently heard a tall tale that the collectors edition, with the carved statues of the Arganath (or however it is spelled) and the National Geographic making of LotR DVD has a slightly different rated-R version, with extra violence, gore, and blood. Can anyone confirm for me that the extended version is the same as that version that is included in the collector's edition?

Um... I don't have any physical proof to help you out, but I highly doubt that they made a "bloodied-up" version. I have the Gift Set EE with the Argonaths and 'tis rated PG-13, just as any other version of the film is.
It would be altogether ridiculous for Peter Jackson to make a different, more violent version of the film.

Yes it has a bit more violence and more intense things no its not rated R since most of the extra footage isn't like that at all.

If I understand correctly you are comparing the 4-disc Extended Edition with the Collectors editions, which had the 4-disc plus the National Geographic DVD and the statues. They both have the exact same 4-disc Extended Edition DVD. The only difference between them is that the collectors edition "gift set" has a National Geographic "behind the movie" DVD, a couple statues, and some trading cards (or so I'm told ;)). In terms of the actual movie and it's content, however, there is no difference between the two editions. They both have the exact same 30-minutes-longer DVD, with the exact same making-of documentries and so on. They are both rated PG-13.
There were rumours that the longer version of the film might be rated R, because some minor "graphic" scenes were added. The film still got PG-13, however. As for TTT, PJ himself has said the EE (Extended Edition) will be rated R. Hope this helps ;).

Interestingly, in the UK the Collector's Edition only contains the Argonath, not the National Geographic CD.
Would that be worth the money to buy separately?

The National Geografy DVD is only in the SE Gift Set in the USA and Canada. Also they included 3 cards for the TCG in the USA/Canada.
The statues are the same.

Well, I personally think that it is worth to get the statues and extra Nat. Geographic DVD. The statuettes are really cool, and it adds to my collection of assorted LOTR pieces around my room. Plus, I didn't pay for it, it was a Christmas gift!
If you just want the EE FOTR, then just get the normal set, without the statuettes and extra DVD. It's the same thing, anyhow, only cheaper.

Oh, I have the Argonath, they are super, and I look forward to the day when all three EE DVD's will be lined up in between them!
I meant just the National Geographic DVD - is that worth buying separately?

That's pretty much what I thought. I don't know why, but my brother seems to have got this funny idea in his head, I don't know why. And he never believes what I tell him! But for some reason he would never believe it unless one of us bought the stupid thing, and had two of the same version of the same movie!
The National Geographic DVD has some information about Tolkien.. were he grew up, and it talks about things that are said to have influenced his writings.
If you don't know these things but want to, then it is probably worth it.
I got the Argonath set simply because I was too sick to go to the store in the morning and when I made it out at night all the stores were sold out of the regular set and I had more money than I knew what to do with and I couldn't wait so I got it. hehehe

OK, here's a related question.
You can buy the Nat'l Geographic DVD separately. Is it the same one that's included with the gift set or does the DVD with the gift set include extra stuff?
I've seen it listed as as a DVD and a DVD SE (special edition) in online auctions.
Purchasing the Platinum Edition and the Nat'l Geographic DVD separately is cheaper. I don't care about the bookends, mag and trading cards. But I would be ticked if the Gift Edition folks got to see more film footage than I did!

This is actually one place where I think the Nat'l Geographic DVD does defer. I believe they said that the one you got with the gift-set had some extra production-photos or something trivial along those lines. My opinion is that the gift-set includes largely trivial extras, at least as far as I'm concerened. I have the Nat'l Geographic DVD, but I bought it separately for $10. It is deffinitely nice, but I'm sure you can find all this info out from any Tolkien biography. Some of the old Tolkien photos are also interesting, but there is nothing here you can't get elsewhere.
