Wouldnt it be fun to make a thread of words that you find frequently misspelled on TTF? Of course not counting missing apostraphes... ;)
alright I have seen alot (it should be 'all right') Of course alright is used but it is very uncommon...it has a place in the dictionary but that definition gives a paragraph long summay of why it isnt and is used. hehe

a lot (it's TWO words, not one!)
Maiar
it's and its... it's is the contraction of it is, its is used like "The dog lost its ball"

apostraphes
Let's add that word to the list...
Seriously, that might be the pot calling the kettle black, just ask Lantarion about me and Isildur... Iseldir... Isulder...
or Pippin... Pippen...
Or poor Ancalagon... Agaolagn... ACojlaf... AOFHAKLFHLA... BLAH!
And Wonks "Thwacked" me for spelling Definately instead of Definitely...
I'm just careless... that's all.

And have you ever had trouble spelling Hyarmendacil?
Ciryaher
01-15-2003, 04:43 AM
And I know how to spell all of your names! Is Ciryaher Penngristion Hyarmendacil such a hard name to spell? Come on, people... ;)
Personally, I find it harder than the dickens to spell Ainuindale...
Aerin
01-15-2003, 04:43 AM
I don't have trouble spelling names like that, but what I do have trouble with is remembering to call my bestest (and yes, that is too a word!) friends by their internet names on TTF.
The trouble we had at the Rennaisance Fair last summer... I didn't know which name I should use when talking to my friends! And to think, there's one person, whom I know in real life, who still calls me Aerin...

After spending a few years editing a high school newspaper, and the three years since then studying English as my major, I notice spelling and grammar mistakes almost everywhere I go. I think the most offensive one, given our context, that I see in the forum semi-regularily is the renaming of our favorite philologist "Tolkein".

I didn't think you were a girl, Munchkin.
And Pip, if I spelled your name wrong it wasn't cos I don't know how to spell Pippin, and it wasn't a typo.
It was me being drunk and stupid...or my head escaping...or something.

A lot of words like thief and friend, always get deformed into theif or freind. I wonder why so many people have difficulty in getting the order between the I and E correct.
Willie: Now take the hoose..
Nelson: The what, the moose?
Willie: The Hoose, the HOOSE!

Just as a point of interest.
If you cannot find either the proper word or the proper spelling; simply make up your own word.
Just look how many really spiffy words were first used by Shakespeare or Carrol.
Plus, the newest release of the O.E.D. has included the word "Jiggy" and attributes the word to Will Smith.
So make up your new words and maybe you'll get lucky.
RD
But somehow I doubt that my word Nermalesque for sickeningly cute will be accepted.

But somehow I doubt that my word Nermalesque for sickeningly cute will be accepted. I suppose that would be a synonym for Elgeeish.
The words I make up normally are simply used to replace stronger words . . .ie, Goosh which I say instead of swearing.

Just to make a quick note; spelling things the American way is not an excuse to spell things wrong (except with "Theater", which looks better that way).
Also, the word dramastic (dramastically, etc) shall from hereon in be acknowledged as a viable word.
Anybody wellcoming newcomers shall be subjected to the harshest criticism imaginable.
If I spell the word occassion wrong, I shall be immediately forgiven.

And please don’t edit all your old posts! They would lose their ambience and attraction.
