View Full Version : Learning Quenya

I am interested in learning Quenya, and I wondered if anyone here speaks it. If anyone does, would they be able to tell me where they learnt it or maybe even give me a hand? Thanks very much!

Calimehtar
01-07-2003, 11:33 PM
I am learning it. I went to www.Ardalambion.com There are some VERY good courses made there. Thats where I am learning it. The Guild of Tolkienology is learning it with that course and I have been working on it there. Maybe we could start that here!

Ardalmabion (http://www.ardalambion.com)

I am going to ask Glorf. about having us start a course here. But first let's see how many people would want to learn. So, if you want to learn Quenya, sign up here.

I would love to learn! Count me in!

Isal Celebalda
01-08-2003, 09:02 AM
Naturally, I'm in. I already know how to say useful phrases such as "May Balrogs eat you" "Get a life" "Hello" "I am an Elf" "I love you" and "Elves invented the art of love"!

Calimehtar
01-08-2003, 02:09 PM
Yeah, I know a little bit. Abour 50-60 words and I know how to make the plurals and I know the rules on writing a sentence correctly. Like you have to have your verbs agree with the subject whether it's plural or singular. Anyways, I'll try to get this thing going. But let's see if more people join.

Isal Celebalda

OK! Can't wait!

Phenix

I would love to learn quenya...

Anamatar IV
01-08-2003, 09:04 PM
I have said it before and I will say it again-it is not a good idea to start a Quenya course as it is already being done by the Guild of Tolkienology.

Phenix
01-08-2003, 09:08 PM
so what your saying si that just becouse they've already done it we can't. I just find that ridiculus and stupid ( no offence) whats' so wrong with two guilds that knows how to speak ( or write) quenya

Isal Celebalda
01-08-2003, 09:11 PM
I agree, Phenix. Just because they have, why can't we? We have a lot of interested members!

Anamatar IV
01-08-2003, 09:19 PM
Well that guild allows outside participants in the Quenya course...meaning even if you are not in the guild you can join its Quenya course.

A question-how would you teach Quenya. Tell me who would teach what it would teach and the such.

Isal Celebalda
01-08-2003, 09:27 PM
Well from what I have heard, the course has already progressed a long way and I would be disadvantaged. As for your question, seeing as Calimehtar had been discussing starting a course I assumed he would be teaching it.

Anamatar IV
01-08-2003, 09:33 PM
Yes they have progressed BUT the threads are still there and you can read them. You answered the question of who would teach it...what would yout teach? the same thing the guild of tolkienology is teaching? Or would you just go down word by word? Are you even ready to both teach and learn Quenya?

Answer me these, please.:)

Isal Celebalda
01-08-2003, 09:42 PM
Well about the teaching, I have no idea, I'm afraid. I don't acutally know, seeing as I was originally going to teach myself but I thought I'd enquire here. At that point the others took over! :) But as for learning, I am indeed ready. And I'm ready to teach myself, if not here!

Calimehtar
01-08-2003, 10:46 PM
Yes, the Guild of Tolkienology is a few lessons ahead. And Anamatar, this was just a suggestion and if a lot of us want to learn Quenya, why not learn in our own Guild. As for me teaching, I was thinking of posting a summary once a week and after the summary of the lesson is posted, people will read the full lesson or atleast the sum. and then work on the excercises and post your questions. If we did this, I suggest we either post the summary on Mondays or Fridays.

And I do see your point... that we'd be posting more or less, the same thing The Guild of Tolk. is but it would be hard to catch up with them. At the least we could have a thread here so we could speak it, but just study off the lessons that The Guild of Tolk. is posting in their forum.

Eöl
01-09-2003, 05:17 AM
And also, they are very far ahead of us. I think they are on lesson 4 and I know that the first lesson thread is gone, because I am a member of that guild! So in other words, we would have to read 4 lessons, one which isn't there, in order to catch up.

Nefmariel
01-09-2003, 05:38 AM
I myself teach but it seems like you all have it under control, I wanted to learn the course but I can't

Maeglin
01-10-2003, 12:24 AM
Isal you know how to say "May Balrogs Eat You", ha ha thats great, could you tell me how to say it, but thats all I want to learn for now.

Calimehtar
01-10-2003, 12:30 AM
I myself teach but it seems like you all have it under control, I wanted to learn the course but I can't

What do you mean? You can't learn it?

And, it's up to all of you whether or not we start learning here and also, we need to have enough people to do it. And I am sure people will drop out. It's down to 4 in the Guild of Tolk. and it started with probably 10-15.

Nefmariel
01-10-2003, 01:29 AM
well I share a comp with my mom and I can't download the thing, I want to though. but I am TRYING to learn it by myself.

Calimehtar
01-10-2003, 03:33 AM
ooooohhhh.... too bad. Are you looking on with the Tolkienology Guild? They can answer any questions you have.

Eöl
01-10-2003, 03:37 AM
I think Calimehtar has made a good point by saying that people have dropped out of this course, and that is in a guild devoted to very serious pursuits! So if you are going to try and start this course I hope we can all finish together, but I don't know if that is a realistic goal. Those lessons are looong. I started number one but couldn't get through it. Calimehtar, you are the teacher right? What I was thinking is that we could have two sets of exercises, the one from the course and another, quiz-like vocabulary test. I think that would help make sure we all knew all the vocab before we moved on. I would be willing to help, if you need it. And another bonus is that I have notes on section one of lesson one. You can use those for your first summary if you want to.

Nefmariel
01-10-2003, 06:50 AM
I may but I may be able to download it how excatly does it work?

Lossengondiel
01-11-2003, 01:55 AM
count me in! please pm me with more info!

Calimehtar
01-11-2003, 02:43 AM
Celebrien, actually you are ahead of me in a way, in the Guild of Tolk. we skipped Lesson One and were going to come to it as the last lesson. I have read and studied Lesson 2,3,4,5, and 6. Lesson One IS LLLOONNNGGG the others aren't even 1/2 that long... if even a 1/3 or 1/4. Did you read the entire thing in one sitting?! I would have never been able to do that! haha.

Anyways, so, you have totally ruled out the Look on with Guild of Tolk? If so, with permission of Glorf. we can start lessons soon. And it's up to you all if we skip Lesson One. (For those of you that haven't looked at the lessons, Lesson One of Course A is on pronunciation.)

And Celebrien, yeah I was going to have more than just the excercises they provided. We would have about 6 different excercises of 10 questions each. And we would each answer a few on the thread.

Nefmariel, I could send you a summary of the lesson through e-mail, that way you dont have to download it, just read it and delete after we are done with that lesson. But here is how you download them:

1) Go to www.ardalambion.com
2) Scroll down a little til you see a list of languages and you see Quenya out to the side of that, there should be a link that says Courses. Click it.
3) Then, there will be an article, scroll down just a little and you will see a link to download "Introduction" and then below it will be a link to download "Lessons 1-5" click "Lessons 1-5".
So, Nef. let me know if you can download it or if I need to send you a summary every week. (Or if you are even in.)

So, here's who are DEFINATELY in if we do it:?
1) Calimehtar (ME!)
2) Celebrien
3) Lossengondiel
4) Nefmariel (?)

Nefmariel
01-11-2003, 06:47 AM
send me if please and I'm in.

I am DEFINATELY in if we do it.

Eöl
01-12-2003, 12:54 AM
Yea lesson one is very long...I think about 35 pages in 12 font. I'm not sure if we should still cover it because even with all of Tolkien that I have read I still do not know Quenya pronunciation well at all. So it's up to you, as you are the teacher but i still think its important.

Hi i am fairly new here and i want to learn how to speak elvish. (if thats possible.) do i have to buy some sort of book, or go to a web site? i would like to learn the language that Legolas speaks in the movie. (by the way out of all of the elves do they speak more than 1 Elvish language on the movies? well thanx for your time!!!

Maeglin
01-12-2003, 01:35 AM
There are 2 forms of Elvish, Quenya and Sindarin (the one that Legolas speaks). I do not think that there is a book anywhere that explains how to speak Elvish, but I believe the Guild of Tolkienology is teaching people how to speak Elvish because apparently some people have learned it, but unfortunately I don't think its the kind that Legolas speaks, but you can check, sorry if this wasn't much help.:(

Ruveriel
01-12-2003, 01:52 AM
Thank you believe it or not u were much of a help!!!! thanx for telling me where i could learn it thou!!!!

Theres a book called the language of tolkien's middle Earth and it has the complete grammar and alphabet of the Elvish language.....it also has a complete glossary of English to Elvish ...just thought i should tell u...

elvish-queen
01-12-2003, 10:44 AM
Please, count me in!!!
We could always learn from the guild of tolkienology, but it's so much easier when you can participate in the lessons.

If possible (with our very different times!) it would be great if we could organise a time when we would all be on here, then we can discuss what we have learnt. Then any queries anyone may have could be answered. How long does everyone think we would need per lesson? A week?
Calimehtar, I hope you're sure you don't mind teaching....!
;)

Yay! This is SO AWSUM:D !

elvish-queen
01-12-2003, 10:50 AM
Liv, you should definately go to http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/

It also looks like we may start a course in the Guild of Elves... look in 'learning Quenya' or something, if you haven't already.

I will be asking a moderator to merge this thread with the longer thread on this topic. :)

Calimehtar

What thread is that? The Learning Quenya thread?

Calimehtar
01-12-2003, 05:36 PM
As for me being the teacher, like posting the summary and making the excercises, I might have to ask someone else to do it sometimes, because I will still be taking part in the Guild of Tolkienology Quenya Course, and sometimes I will have to make a summary and stuff for their Lesson.

-Calimehtar

I can't promise that I'll be able to, but I'll try to help you Calimehtar if you need it. Not that I've done anything but the first lesson, but I guess I could do a summary once in a while. Besides, it would help me learn.
Calimehtar, I think you are very generous. thanx!:p

Fading Evenstar
01-12-2003, 07:34 PM
I'm attempting to learn it... it's difficult, but sheer brilliance :) It sounds beautiful when spoken.. I read movie lines all the time, lol :)

I am definitely in to learn it :) I shall somehow find the time... :)
Then I can go to school and talk in Elvish to.. myself and nobody would know what I was saying... lol. Yes, I'm semi weird, I know.

I'm definitely gonna learn it!! If god is my witness and whatnot... I will

Calimehtar
01-12-2003, 10:57 PM
We can start whenever all of you are ready... Are we going to use this thread for all the lessons or are we going to open a new thread for the lessons....

Isal Celebalda
01-13-2003, 06:40 PM
Ask Glorf if we can start a new thread, this one's too congested.

elvish-queen
01-13-2003, 07:24 PM
I'm ready when you are! I'm so happy this is going to happen.
BTW, please post dates and times that we'll discuss (in GMT or something so I can work out from South African time) so I can be there!
Thanks!

Maeglin
01-13-2003, 08:32 PM
You may start a new thread if you like, just keep the same one for each lesson though, don't make a new one every time a lesson ends, and as soon as you make the new thread I will have this one deleted.

Calimehtar
01-13-2003, 11:24 PM
OK, before I start the new thread lets get ALL details finished right now in this thread. I want to have the other thread as organized as possible.

Details:
One Lesson Per Week
Lesson Summary Posted Every Monday
Are we skipping Lesson 1: Pronunciation?
Is there anything else? And who can do summaries when I can't or will be happy to do summaries just anytime, (so I don't have to do it every time.) It doesnt matter though if I do it.

Maeglin
01-13-2003, 11:32 PM
Calimehtar I don't think you need to go over pronunciation at all, especially since most of the time people will be writing it down here and not saying it out loud to others.;)

Calimehtar
01-13-2003, 11:38 PM
Yes, that was my opinion, also. I just wanted to see what the others thought. I know some wanted to read that lesson. Anyways, if none of you mind, I'd like to skip it til later.

(Personally, I'd like to finish the course by Summer and I think we will be able to finish it by then. So, if its OK with all of you, lets let that be our last lesson. Because here all we will do is write it but if any of you have AOL or Yahoo, we can talk there. And I have a microphone for my computer, so I could actually TALK to you. 20 lessons, 1 lesson per week... how many weeks til summer? (By summer, I mean get out of school.) We have 17 or 18 weeks of school left.

By the way, Glorf. How did you get a link in your signature. I'd like one in mine, but couldn't figure out how. I don't know the "code" for it or whatever.

Maeglin
01-13-2003, 11:59 PM
Ohh that, well its kind of complicated, but I'll explain as best I can. What you have to do is go to Post Reply (it doesn't matter what the thread is), and you know how to put hyperlinks into your posts right? (if you don't PM and I'll tell you how) So what you do is enter the text for your hyperlink and then the address or ubl code or whatever its called and it shows up on your post. Then all you have to do is copy and paste it into your sig and hit submit modifications at the bottom of your Edit Profile screen, it will then show up on in your signature on your posts. PM me if you have any questions about it.;)

Oh yeah and when your on the post reply screen doing that don't post the reply, just close the screen.

Eirien
01-16-2003, 01:27 AM
Hi i was just wondering if ur starting with lesson 2 then was there already a lesson 1: pronunciation... somewhere else?????if there is...where is it?

Calimehtar
01-16-2003, 03:35 AM
We are skipping Lesson I: Pronunciation until later. It is in the course we are using but not on The Tolkien Forum anywhere.
Does that answer your question? (I didn't fully understand it.)

Eöl
01-16-2003, 04:03 AM
I think Eirien meant have we already covered Lesson One...Or is there another place where it has been covered. The reason we are saving Lesson One until the end is
a.It's looong...about 35 pages in 12 font.
b.There wont really be a need to use pronunciation if we're using it in posts. Obviously I don't think you will find many people who speak Quenya outside of this or other Tolkien sites.;)

Marenautha
01-17-2003, 12:30 AM
Do we need to do anything to get into this course? Or do we just go to that web site that you gave us earlier and click on the Quenya course?

OK, I will make a summary and excercises. This time I wont be able to just use the notes I took when I read it a few weeks ago, I'll have to re-read it and make excercises, so I would appreciate it if people would do the excercises or post ANYTHING besides errors I made. Hmm I don't think any of us our quite that skilled yet, including myself with my 30 something word vocabulary...:D Thanks for the offer, if you ever have another contest, say in 3 months or so we'll be ready! Anyways, great news, the Lesson Three summary is up, posted by yours truly! *Bows* So any of you still interested please go check it out and I would love to hear some constructive criticism on my summary format. The summary is in the same thread Lesson Two is in, called **Quenya Lessons**.
