I've always thought that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were The Red Book of Westmarch.

The Red Book of the West March was the fictional diaries of Blibo, Frodo and eventually Sam and his descendants.

In it was recounted the tales covered in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Although the book does not exist in reality, it was the tales found therein that Professor Tolkien Translated his works from.

I hope this helps.
