The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is THE key battle in The War Of The Ring, in that it is Gondor's "last stand" against the forces of Mordor. Since you say that you haven't read the books, I won't say any more about that battle, but I will tell you that there are a few other armed confrontations of note within the book, and I doubt that PJ will be able to resist including any of them. In terms of how the Pelennor battle should look on film, in various interviews and comments, PJ has discussed ALL of the other battles in the films, including the Siege Of Barad-Dur shown at the begining of FOTR and Helm's Deep as being nothing but precursors to this battle. Given the high quality of PJ's fighting sequences thus far, I'd be surprised if this battle was not among the better ever captured on film.

The Battle of Pelennor Fields will make Helm's Deep look small:D

All I'll say is that Helms Deep had 10,000 orcs, and Pellenor Fields has over 100,000 (or so I'm told). But numbers aside it is an extremely epic battle, with some of the most epic moments in the whole trilogy.

I forgot to ask good Talimon. Will there be Elves at Pelannor Fields in the movie???? :):D;)

I'll wet myself if they are in there. The final battle was the time for Man to accept his inheritance of Middle-earth. The Elves were fading. If the quest failed, they could no longer wear their Rings and their lands would begin to slowly decay. If the quest was successful, the power of the Three Elven Rings would disappear also and the hidden power that kept the Elven Kingdoms free of decay and aging would begin to fade away with the ravages of time.
The Elves saw no recourse but to leave. The sooner the better and they were certainly not involved in any direct conflict with Sauron except at the greatest need. AKA Thranduil and Celeborn protecting their realms from invasion.
I hope we see no Elves in RotK. They don't belong... except for Legolas.
Grond - I've heard no rumor of Elves at Pelennor. However, seeing as the 3 Rings subplot has so far been excised (insomuch as that their power will fade if the One is destroyed), does this change anything for you?
Personally, I too hope that we don't see any elves in ROTK, it's a time for Man to step up. I won't be too distraught if we see some though. It would make sense that there might be a small company of Helm's Deep survivors* that replace the band of Dunedain which travel with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli.
*The last I saw, two elves were dragging Gimli off to the Hornburg. It's still hard to say whether or not all the elves at Helm's Deep died.

My main fear is that the RotK will feature Arwen bringing Anduril to Aragorn and that she will be accompanied by a force of her people. I can live with Arwen's presence (though I like it not) if she does it against the will of her father and "by herself". If she is accompanied by a troupe of Battle-elves, I will be greatly saddened. The book is just too good to continue to add plot where it isn't necessary.
Since they've already established that Aragorn doesn't have the sword with him yet... someone has got to bring it. Let's just hope is is Arwen alone.

Have not viewed TTT movie, and I'm almost afraid to ask: what's this about Aragorn not having Anduril, that is Narsil re-forged? Tolkien makes it quite clear that Aragorn received the Sword-That-Was-Broken and re-forged in Rivendell before setting out with the other Nine Walkers. Surely the sword he carries in the movie is Anduril? Mr. Jackson takes some liberties with the story line, I know......
Nope. Aragorn carries the same ranger sword throughout all of FOTR and TTT. This decision to reforge Narsil later was all part of a change to Aragorn's character where he gradually accepts his king-to-be role, rather than (as in the booK) intending to pursue the kingship all along.
Grond - I agree. Hopefully Arwen will not bring an army of Elves with her. If nothing else (i.e. faithfulness to the book), they already did this in TTT.
The Battle of Pelennor Fields will be awsome it'll make helms deep look like a little skrimish.

The battle of the pelenor is THE MOST epic battle in th whole trilogy. in the book, Helm's deep was small. In the movie PJ made it huge. The battle of the Pelenor is going to make the Helm's deep battle in the movie look like atiny taste of what was to come...

Hey, im a new member...
What about the battle at the black gate? How big do you think that will be? I have the recording of the book, but i think i missed a part some how. I don't remember them fighting at all in Mordor, and i saw someone write about Pippen killing a troll. Help, im confused!!!
The Black Gate Battle would be huge, but the *spoilers* Ring is destroyed so all the Mordor armies are defeated, and all that is left are evil men.

Seeing that Elves were at the Battle of Helms Deep I wouldnt doubt if Elrond sent some elves from Lorien or somewhere to else to help the outnumbered forces of Minas Tirith. But i agree with Grond and others that this would just be wrong and would make it worse since the book is so good. All i want to see are the swaneknights of Dol Amroth and the oliphaunts and i wonder if they will portray variags of Khand? I always wondered what they would look like.

Well, if I remember correctly there were three times as many Elves at the Pelennor Fields than Helm's Deep in the books, so perhaps PJ will stick to that ratio....

You can't count Elladan and Elrohir as Elves because they were Perehil. :);)

There is so much left to do in the return of the king. Does anyone know if the black gate battle will be cut out and have the destruction of the ring happen during the pellenor fields battle?

The only person who knows for sure if the Black Gate will be included is PJ. But one of the ROTK calendar pics is of Aragorn in full Gondorian armor, so I'm guessing this pic is Aragorn leading his army to the Black Gate.
Certainly there is a lot of material to be covered in ROTK...makes me worried about what may be in or out.

Seeing as that there is a picture of the Mouth of Sauron, I'd say it's very likely that there will be a battle of the Black Gates.

what about the grey havens? Is the movie going to be 5 hours long? I guess it clear that a lot will be cut out.

We already know that the Scouring of the Shire has been excised from the story, so Saruman will have to meet a different end.
I suspect that PJ thought Sam and Frodo's slow crawl across Mordor was too dull cinematically, so Shelob has been moved to RotK to liven their story up (which meant extra battles had to be added to TTT because the action was out of balance).
I expect the geography of Mordor will be played around with to fit the story into the three hours.
I missed Anduril in TTT when they handed their weapons over at Edoras - a non-event in the film! Anduril will probably replace the black and silver banner that Arwen made for Aragorn, which leads me to wonder what else will be changed.

their cutting the Scouring of the shire? How can they do that, thats one of the most important parts of the books! And they will have the black gate battle because they picked an actor for the mouth of sauron. And hes kinda freaky lookin too.

They could have the Mouth of Sauron without a battle, but this is Peter Jackson's film, so I think the battle will be, Trolls, eagles 'n' all.

I hope they don't do away with the standard Arwen makes for Aragorn. I love that part in the book when the standard is unfurled. I would be kinda peeved if they left that out.

*stares* What is this world coming to? LoTR is unconcluded without the Scouring of the Shire! It CANNOT be the same. If the hobbits return to their beloved Shire of old, or even if the movie concludes before they return and viewers are left with the IDEA that they did . . . well then, that's erasing the whole point of Tolkien's work! The amazing thing about his world, to me, is that it is so parallel to our own. There are no happy endings. Look at Aragorn and Arwen. Look at the Shire after Sharkey reaches it. I mean, come on.
Anyway, to the main topic - I think the main battle will be the Pelennor Fields. But they'd BETTER not have Elves! I agree with whoever said the Elves should be a minority in RoTK. The Elves in Helm's Deep were okay. Helm's Deep itself was so blown off course that the inclusion of the Elves didn't really bother me. But Elves on the Pelennor Fields! Now THAT would be horrible.
I think Black Gate will be big, too. But I think that Pelennor Fields will be "the main battle", or what have you, because there are several very heroic deeds performed that make it more than just a battle...

I am inclined to view Peter Jackson's work in the way Mrs Maggott suggests: that it be viewed not as a rendering of the book to film, but as a general Tolkienesque story closely related to Lord of the Rings. That way, you won't get so upset about how the battle at the Black Gate turns out; and you can always read the book again to console yourself.

I think The RotK will go something like this...
Starts with mustering of Rohan
Goes to Frodo, Sam and Shelob
Then Sam Rescueing Frodo(if it is included)
Ride Of Rohan and brief meeting wiht Ghanburighan(sp?)
Siege of Gondor and Faramir being shot with dart(Battle)
Rohan arriving in the nick of time
Battle
Battle
Battle
They march to Black Gate after brief council
Back to Frodo and Sam
Just as Battle starts Gollum jumps in to the Crack of Doom:rolleyes:
Then a summary thing kind of like in the FotR with clips from Battle of Dale :D , Saruman jumping out of Orthanc (don't know why they have to do it that way) and so on
Then Frodo, Gandalf, and elves leaving ME
Thoughts and Feelings?
