This thread is for random topics that do not meet the qualifications for the other threads. So, if you make a website about LOTR, here you can say "Hey! I made a website about Elves, check it out!" or whatever. So, here is my random topic:
If anyone wants an animated or still avatar made, you can ask me and tell me what you want and stuff and I'll make it. I also have a website I just put up with a few avatars I have made.
LOTR Avatars (http://www.LOTRavatars.20m.com)
Thanks,

Calimehtar your link isn't working for me:( , is anyone else having this problem?
Well let's see, I have started a website with my friend HobbitGirl but she has been very busy so it is not very complete at all yet but you can check it out at My site! (http://www.geocities.com/iamcelebrien)
P.S. Glorf, I didn't have trouble with the link maybe your computer is just acting up.
P.P.S.If anyone is interested in helping me and has fast internet (cable or DSL) please PM me. Of course I would like to know this person at least a little bit before I let them go mess with my site.:D

Just curious... why would we have to have fast internet? If high-speed internet isn't necessary, I could help. I have made a few websites. (Though I know my new one doesn't look very good.)
Glorf. - The link worked for me... heres the site:

Hey Calimehtar the link is working for me but there is no order form at the bottom of the page like it says.

Yes, I know. I had one, but when I changed the background for the site, it deleted it. I will bring it back up today.

Okay, and then I can order an avatar. Hey can you make any 2 pictures flash back and forth? Like it doesn't have to be just photos does it?
Calimehtar
01-17-2003, 01:59 AM
Do you mean can I have a cartoon drawing flash back and forth? yes. It can be ANY kind of picture. (And you can just tell me what you want here instead of going to the site.)

These avatars are actually quite easy to make.
The hard thing would be making something original.
Calimehtar
01-17-2003, 03:02 AM
Yes, with Paint Shop Pro it isn't very hard. What do you mean by original though? Making your own picture to use?

Calimehtar this (http://www.nightrunner.com/cgi-bin/search.py?kw=Glorfindel&type=and&l=12&pn=0) is the site where the pictures I want are, you'll see the thumbnail of my current avatar and the other picture I wanted with it was the facial portrait of Glorfindel, if you could do that for me it would be great, thanks,
Glorf;)

Calimethar, If you like to do such things, I'd like to have my current avatar
and this animated fire (http://people.freenet.de/madblueimp/anim_feuer.gif) together in one...
And would you tell how you do it?
By the way, if someone is interested, I got some nice Tolkien Art Wallpapers stored on my site:
Just go on my site (http://www.madblueimp.tk) and follow the link wallpaper...

OK glorf, I will work on it right now.
Ramagna: Are you wanting the fire to engulf that picture of the aligator... or what?
Calimehtar
01-17-2003, 11:29 PM
OK, Glorf. I just finished your avatar. Its over there<----. (In my avatar place. I will go back to my normal one once you reply to this.) I am going to change the color of the font because that doesn't show up too well. So, do you want me to change what it says or do you even want it to say anything?
Maeglin
01-17-2003, 11:31 PM
Oohh I like what it says, thanks Calimehtar!:)

Ramagna, I'm not sure if this is what you are wanting.... but here is what I did. I figured you were thinking the flame would end up filling the who screen like the alligator was totally blown up, but it didnt fill it all up, anyways, here it is.
Maeglin
01-18-2003, 01:16 AM
Thats an Alligator on Ramagna's Avatar? Why did I always think it was a bear?! I guess it all depends on how one percieves it.

Yes, I thought of something like that... but, my avatar is no aligator, it's a monster out of a wonderful french movie...

I'd like an avatar of Arwen, please. I don't know anything more specific than that.
BTW, does anyone know how to say "There is always hope" in Elvish? Quenya or Sindarin, it doesn't matter.

Could I have an avatar please?
I was thinking a cartoonish but good colour young elf.
Over the top, if it's not to much trouble, I thought it could feature writing superimposed. First my name (Isal Celebalda) superimposed over the picture and then the name dissolving and "Seeker of the truth" after? Then that dissolves again and my name reappears? Would that be ok/possible?
Thanks a lot! :D
Calimehtar
02-05-2003, 01:45 AM
Yes, that is possible... I will have to reinstall the program I use for avatars first, though. Also, do you know of a picture like that? or something.... also... does superimposed mean to have the writing on top of the picture?

Yes, superimposed means over the top. However... no I don't have a picture. Anyone have one suitable to what I said on the last page?
Bethelarien
02-05-2003, 08:06 PM
Okay, since this is for random topics, I have a pretty random thing to ask.
Let me explain a bit first. I am writing a book. (or at least attempting to) Now then. Here's my little blurb of background info:
Despite the beliefs of all Middle-earth, Gollum (Smeagol) survived his fall into the Cracks of Fire, and managed to save the ring. However, he lost it once more while sneaking through Greenwood the Great. Sauron, who managed to endure, is desperately seeking it. The Elves have returned to Middle-earth in great numbers, not trusting Man-kind with the fate of all civilized people.
Okay. So it takes place about 300 years after the LOTR series. Now. I'm really bad at thinking up names, so I am asking for permission to use some of your screen names, namely the following:
Isal Celebalda
Farathorn
Emoduil
Chokang
Aren (though I don't know if Ol'gaffer posts in here)
If it's not okay, that's fine. And just because it's your name doesn't mean that it sticks to your character. For instance, I'd like to use Farathorn as the king of Gondor. Get the idea? (Maybe you don't. Oh well.)
Also, if anyone can help me out, I need some more Man and Dwarf names, and perhaps a hobbit-name or two. I especially need one for the king of Rohan.
Thanks for your help!
EDIT: I'd also like to use Nefmariel's name. Since I don't know if people actually read this thread very often, those on my list can expect a PM from me very soon.
Isal Celebalda
02-05-2003, 09:48 PM
I'd love it if my name (Isal Celebalda) was in a book! Although it'd be difficult/impossible to get published due to being set in Middle-Earth and including Sauron and Gollum (copyright infringement).
But even if it wouldn't be able to be published I think it's a great idea and you should go for it! It'd be fantastic to have my name used. You'll have to sent me the document as you do each chapter! ;) Were you planning on keeping my character or just the name?
Bethelarien
02-05-2003, 11:14 PM
I know it can't be published, I'm just an amateur. I plan to keep your character, not just your name. I like your character, and it will go well with the plot. And I would love to send it to you. If I write in chapters, I'll send it in chapters. Otherwise, I'll send sections. When I figure out how to do attachments. :o
Calimehtar
02-06-2003, 01:03 AM
Cool!!! You can use my name... AND I'd REALLY LOVE IT IF YOU DID! As for other names, I'll put some at the bottom... but if someone is going to re-make Rivendell... CAN I BE THE king or whatever?! That'd be cool. Calimehtar - Lord of Rivendell! haha, (unless Elrond is coming back... which I guess he might be).
Names:
Sancho Sandyman--------Hobbit
Legolin-----------------------Elf
maybe I can think of others... heres a site, where you can put in a name, and it will give you the Elf/Orc/Hobbit/Dwarf names for that name... go there, put in a couple names, and use the names that come back... Some of them are good, others aren't. I got Sancho Sandyman from there... I like that... anyways, heres the site:
The Barrow Downs (http://www.barrowdowns.com)
Maeglin
02-06-2003, 01:31 AM
Well I'd say you can use my name, but I guess you really can't, at least not without permission from the Tolkien Estate, and they're not about to give anyone any rights to anything. :(
Bethelarien
02-06-2003, 03:21 PM
Calimhetar-
Your name is certainly a possiblity, though Lord Elrond is returning with most of the Elves. Thanks for suggesting the Barrow-Downs, I almost forgot about them!
Glorf-
I know technically I'm not supposed to use names from the Tolkien books (copyrights and whatnot), but since I'm only an amateur and this will never be published, I'm going to do what I want.:D And I may use your character as well.

02-07-2003, 04:25 AM
Isal Celebalda, I made an avatar for you. Tell me if this one is OK. (I only have 1 day left on the demo program I am using...)
P.S. you may want to ask "Nom" to make you an avatar. He made mine and he is very good at it...

Does anybody know how many types of elvish there are? At first I thought there was only Quenya, but people have talked of others. Does anybody know a few of 'em?
Well there is Sindarin, I'm not entirely sure which language was used by whom, but I think that almost all of the Elves used Sindarin because Quenya was the High Elven tongue and usually only used in records and high council meetings.
elfgirl

Oh... Thanks
Scatha
02-19-2003, 01:22 PM
Quenya is the elven language used by the valar and the high elves thereafter. The Sindarin tongue initially came to life through those that didn't travel to Valinor, then gradually became the most spoken elvish language. Quenya is now mostly used by high elven scholars and nobility.

In addition to Sindarin (which was already mentioned), there is also Silvan. In UT it says that Nimrodel would only speak Silvan even though most in Lorien spoke Sindarin.

I was in Spain for 8 days Lasgalen. A place near Alicante if that means anything to you. While i was over there i read Unfinished Tales, re-read the Silmarillion and re-read the Hobbit as part of my preparation for rankings tests in the Guild of Tolkienology, believe it or not. A very productive (and relaxing) week!

OK, time for a dumb question:
What exactly is the Guild of Tolkienology? I mean, what do they do?
I may be biased here because I am in the Guild Of Tolkienology:D but their main point is to learn all that Tolkien has written. That includes discussions about books, debates and my personal favorite "The Study." There is also a lot of discussions about various topics, for example there was recently a discussion about the Watcher in the Water. So if you want to learn a lot (the Guildmaster, Grond is a Tolkien genius!) then I sugest joining. However, participation is strictly enforced.

I don't think there's any rule against non-members joining discussions, but then again why not just join? It's an excellant guild, and some of its members are extremely dedicated. For example, i just took my test last night, and the amount of work FoolofATook must have put in to get them all ready is mind-boggling. People like that are only going to help in one's study of Tolkien, and like Eol said, Grond knows his stuff.

What test?
gilgalad
03-16-2003, 08:45 PM
In the Guild of Tolkienology, a recent introduction has been a ranking system, whereby each member has a rank, ranging from apprentice to master. To gain a rank you must take a test pertinent to that rank, set out and examined by FoolofATook.
Scatha
03-16-2003, 10:20 PM
I already stated to be willing to take that test, but never got a reply on that. (unfortunately)
gilgalad
03-16-2003, 11:05 PM
Chances are that FoolofATook wasn't online at that time and therefore never saw the post. You should try again as im pretty sure that at least one other non-member has taken a test already.
Yes my avatar is Squall, and I can't remember where I got it....:D And Scatha, if you have MSN Messenger (I know you don't want to give out your email that's fine) FoolofaTook's screen name is ncsutook@hotmail.com. He's a cool guy and I'm sure he would be willing to let you take the test even if you don't join. Other than that...nothing! Actually, because of lack of participation I'm gonna stop posting Quenya lessons...*tear* I'm sorry for those of you who were participating!

I have a question mellonin...If an elf and a human had a baby, would it live only in human years or elf years?
Some answers that I asked a few people: a vulcan, a halfling, it would live a 1000 years and then die. If the human was a man, then it would live in human years because of the domination of man? Please help:),
If a baby was born to an elf and a man, it is hard to say what would happen. Elros and Elrond for example chose seperate fates, one being a Man (Elros), and Elrond being an Elf. However, the son of Beren and Luthien was Mortal, if I'm not mistaken. Also Arwen and Aragorn's children were mortal. So vulcan, thousand years, and a halfling are all wrong answers. The baby would probably have a longer lifespan than normal Men though.

The offspring of Elros had longer life than the average man. Quote from Sil: "and all his line, the kings and lords of the royal house, had long life even according to the measure of the Numenoreans." I would imagine all Elf-Man children would have this extended life span.
-Lasgalen
spirit
03-19-2003, 09:39 AM
that is a little ... weird...but then you still live longer
Correct Lasgalen, but what about Dior? Did he have longer life, just not as long as the line of Elros?
Lasgalen
03-19-2003, 08:58 PM
We will never know that, Eol. Dior was slain in the second kin slaying. Whether he would have had a longer life will remain speculation.
-Lasgalen
You are right...I made a quick scan just now through my copy of LotR and could not find when Aragorn and Arwen's son died...Does anyone know when he died, and when he was born because if he lived to be 300 years old or something like that we will know the answer to our little question.
