View Full Version : The Dorms

It was a sunny day with a dark blue sky filled with little white balls of cloud. Birds sang in the air and flit about, flying from green tree to green tree in search of a comfortable spot to perch. Into green lawns and flowering gardens they would fly, sometimes stopping by a birdbath and sometimes stopping to eat a dainty worm who was unlucky enough to have chosen that moment to pop its head out of the dry ground. Then across neatly paved cobblestone streets the birds would fly, and up, up over halls and buildings built of a majestic white stone. On the roof of one of these buildings, a congregation of birds was meeting. The building was two stories high and showed signs of prosperity. Even though it was one of the plainer buildings in sight, it was still rich enough to be trimmed every now and then with a little snitch of gold or other precious metal. Its door, situated firmly in the middle of the long side of the rectangle-shaped building, was engraved with a few simple lines, scrolled and manipulated in meticulous patterns. A small brick walk led up to the front door from the cobblestone street. Short iron fence posts surrounded the walk and the large yard around the building, which was filled with trees and flowers of the most beautiful hue. At the base of the building and almost touching the ground could be seen small, round windows which looked as though they were peeking out of some hiding place. Though all the buildings of Heren Istarion looked as though they were made by Elves and Men of past ages, an effort had still been made to accommodate and make any hobbit students who should come feel at home. For this building was The Dorms, the place of habitation for all the students of Heren Istarion during their training period. Quite unlike any dorms that have or will ever be seen, these dorms were rich even in themselves. The pointed peak overhanging each of the orderly windows in their two rows, the gray tiled roof, the golden door knob, and the glass-paned windows all spoke of the prosperity and respect which the leaders of Heren Istarion showed towards their students. Even the green lawns which surrounded the building spoke of prosperity. Trees, flowers, gardens, bowers, birds, butterflies, stone benches, and fountains; all kinds of Elvish and ancient novelties were placed with care in that lush verdure.
One of the birds flew noisily from the roof, being disturbed from his perch by a group of people making their way towards The Dorms. The group was led by Nenya, a member of the Grand Council and a Trainer of Heren Istarion. Turning around in front of the white engraved door and gesturing towards the white stone building behind her, she said, "This is where your living quarters will be. Enjoy yourselves while you are here!" She smiled. "The gardens are placed here for your refreshment and delight. I ask only that you treat this place with respect as you are required to treat every place in this institution with respect." The huddled group of students in front of the speaking elf nodded. "You have all been set to reside on the first floor. The basement is for hobbits, should we get any, storerooms, kitchens, and staff living quarters. As we get more students you may be required to move up to the next floor. Upper classmen will dwell on the top floor. Now, this building has been furnished with three cooks, three housekeepers, and one Leader of the Dorms. The Leader of the Dorms is in charge of this building and whatever happens in it. Pay him respect!
"Now," Nenya continued, "in this building there are two large sitting rooms for study, one large dining room, and many bedrooms for your good use. Use them well! You are of course not compelled to stay here unless you feel a need to do so. You may walk about the streets of this institution anytime you like and may visit the Library to study and meet with any friends you have not been able to see. Because of the small amount of students at the moment, you are all being housed in this one dorm. In the future, students will probably become separated into separate dorms. Enjoy the privilege you have of being the first group of Heren Istarion students!" A great cheer rose from the crowd of listeners. Nenya smiled and bowed her head slightly. Then, turning to Havor Drengen, the Leader of the Dorms, she handed him a shining golden key. "Here is the key to the front door. This door is to remain unlocked at all times except for in times of war." Havor took the key and, unlocking the door, led the group of students into The Dorms.

"Are there not any rooms suitable for a Dwarf?" Dain asked Havor. The man was about to reply, but Dain cut him off saying, "Back in my homelands I would have a royal welcome and a great re--"
"Well Master Dwarf, this is not your kingdom, so you will be treated as any other student," Havor said. Dain rolled his eyes and entered the Dorms.

Goldberry walked into the dorms happpily, almost skipping. As soon as she had found her room, she set to work decorating it and neatening it to her liking. She hung her spare bows, daggars, and swords on the walls, carefully oiled and stowed her armor and spread up her bed. When all was done she sat on her windowsil and began to draw the campus.

Dain, tired of pouting of how soft his bed was (Dwarves prefer stone for beds), decided to take a walk through the Dorms. While strolling through the halls, he came across a lovely Elf-maiden; the sunlight poured through the window, giving her hair the same look as a string of bright topaz. Astounded by her beauty, Dain asked, "Fair maiden, what is your name and where do you come from? For your eyes are more radiant and beautiful than any jewel upon Middle-Earth."
He was speaking to the fair Elf woman Charmania, though he did not know her name, and awaited her introduction.

Hello master dwarf it has been a long time since I have seen one of your kind---and in the company of so many elves --- but it is good that old predijuces are forgotten...I am Charmiana

Restless from being sitting so long and having so many new things around him Sarin took to the halls and began to wander looking for someone or something new.

Sighing, Goldie left her window, brushed her long, dark hair, and went to explore campus. Streching as she left her room, she ran almost directly into Sarin.
"Sorry," she muttered, "I'm not used to so many people. I'm Goldberry."

"Quite alright lady Goldberry." He then bows to her "I am Sarin Skysight of the Lokar Monastary. I was simply admiring the beautiful halls and wasn't paying attention. I still have to learn my way around this campus its large and some teachers like to try and hide their classes like the Word Skills teacher."

Sarin returned the smile welcoming the conversation. "Ah I am taking Hand to hand combat, Word skills, Wisdom, History of Arda,People of Arda, Races of Arda, Geography of Arda, Stealth Fighting, and Healing. Quite a full load but I have time to get adjusted as only two of them have started. So what classes are you taking and which class are you training to be?"
Goldberry344
01-23-2003, 04:06 AM
"That is quite a workload. I'm taking Archery courses now, courses on shooting from the ground and from horseback. I am also taking the history, races, people and geography classes, as well as troop formations, group fighting, knife play and sword fighting from horseback." Goldie grinned, "It is odd that the first person I, a warrior, should meet here is a monk!"

"Charmiana, let us go converse with our fellow peers!" Dain shouted, although the Elf stood next to him. Grabbing her by the hand, he rushed down the hall to where Goldie and Sarin stood conversing amongst themselves. "Hello my friends! My name is Dain Ironfoot, Lord of Erebor, and I will be training with you!" smiled Dain, the others looking at him oddly, but Dain continued, "I am taking the course for Mountain King, and my electives are war strategy, diplomacy, and word skills!"
The others exchanged glances with one another, and then burst into laughter, for the Dwarf was quite a talker.

Glarin walked slowly into the dorms. He was tall, even for an elf, and dressed in rich garments and jewels. He thought to himself, "what was my father thinking sending me to a place like this? It is full of riff-raff that cannot compare to me." Glarin had been a very spoiled elf that was full of himself, he did not know that his father had sent him here to teach him a lesson and to humble him. Glarin walked to his room and thought to himself "what a second-class room this is, I deserve better!" He then sighed and threw his stuff down on his bed, he took his swords, daggers, knives, and spear from his pack and hung them on the wall. He then took a step out of the door and saw a dwarf, he eyed the dwarf suspiciously and with an unfriendly look, he had not forgotten the prejuidices of old. Glarin then shut his door and began doing his daily work-out before going to his studies.
Goldberry344
01-28-2003, 12:50 AM
Goldie raised a black eybrow at the newcomer, then burst out laughing. "Perhaps he needs a welcoming?" she suggested, and she skipped down the hall to the room in question. Spiritedly she rapped three times at the elf's door, grinning insanely. "I love meeting new people," she explained to Dain, as the door swung open reveling a most grumpy looking elf. "HI! I'm Goldberry...I'm new here too, as a matter of fact we all are, and we're just trying to get to know people. Who are you?"
Maeglin
01-28-2003, 01:35 AM
Glarin raised an eyebrow at the elf and looked suspiciously at her, he was not used to being welcomed so cheerfully, nor was he in any mood to talk or deal with visitors. "I am Glarin, son of Glorfindel," he responded, "it is nice to meet you Goldberry, but I am busy right now, perhaps we shall meet again some-time during our stay here, until then, good day to you." Glarin turned back into his room and closed the door, where he had come from he had not had many friends, he did not realize this was because he was so conceited, and he was surprised that Goldberry had talked to him....

01-28-2003, 02:04 AM
Before the door swung totally shut, Goldie shoved her foot in the way of the door, wincing as it hit her toe, but smiling as it swung back open. "I am very persistant, as I think you will find, Glarin." Goldie grinned at the astonished elf. Following a wild instinct, Goldie walked confidently into the room. "Nice stuff you have, Glarin. You must be rich or something."

01-28-2003, 04:00 AM
"My father is very wealthy, the sword over there, the one that has a silvery glow to it, was used by him long ago when he challenged the witch-king and prophesied his doom, it is called Glorsil. The spear is also his." Glarin said this as though the conversation were at an end and it were time for Goldie to leave, but she just stood there still. Glarin looked at her with a dumbfounded look on his face, as if what she was doing was very rude, "Is there something else you would like from me, or like to ask me? If not, then once again I say good day to you, I must be getting back to my studies." But even as he said this on the outside, something that Glarin did not understand seemed to be going on inside of him, in his heart maybe.....

Sarin sighed and followed everyone else over with the new one. "Please we are only trying to be courteous in welcoming you. The Ladies Goldie and Charmiana are showing a good deal of kindness why turn it down?"
Goldberry344
01-28-2003, 04:42 AM
Goldie smiled at her new friends, then skipped further into the room, leaning against the open window sill. "Very pretty weapons. Perhaps I could show you mine some day, no challenge meant, of course." Goldie grinned even wider. "Talk about a family legacy, though. You know, that makes it so that both our families helped saving middle earth. Your dad and my grandfather, Tom Bombadil. Pretty nifty. What classes are you taking?"
Celebrien walked into the dorms and began unpacking his things. His sword hung on the wall with his two long blades and his bow from the forest of Nan Elmoth. He sighed and wondered how long it would be before he could use his bow properly. "An elf that never learned to shoot...sigh" he thought. His thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of an excited conversation going on down the hall. He quickly strapped his knives on and headed down the hall to check it out.

They went on their way toward the dining hall.

"Well thank you for the compliment on the lovely dress, and what lovely rags you are wearing," Glarin replied with a nasty look at her and a sarcastic tone in his voice. "If ever we do follow through with that challenge, I just pray that I my hand doesn't slip or maybe I swing too quickly and cannot stop myself from following through, if that happened there might be a most unfortunate accident."

A tall Elf wearing a dark robe with silver stars on it entered the hall from his room. "Hello everyone! My name is Celebrien, may I come with you? And the loss of his sons... but no matter. He would enjoy life as he had before, even if he was a hundred years older than some of them by Dwarf standards.

She quietly walked to the corner of the room and sat down, as she was still a stranger here and had not made any friends yet. She watched the other interact, with a quiet awe. Rasec arrived at the building supposed to be The Dorms. But he was not sure of it. He contemplated the beauty of the building for a while and then entered through the tall golden door. There he found himself walking on a long and large corridor, full of doors on both sides. While looking for some body to ask for a room, one of the doors on the right side opened and a fair elf came out.
- Greetings, newcomer - he said. - I am Glarin, one of the students. Are you looking for a room?
- Greetings, Lord Glarin - Rasec answered. - I am indeed looking for a room, if this is really The Dorms.
- Yes, it is. And there is place for you in the room I live in. Would you like to see the room?
- Of course. I would be delighted to.
Glarin led him through the door of the room. It seemed to be very comfortable and the decoration was indeed beautiful and harmonious.
- I will definitely stay here. Thank you for your help, Lord Glarin.
- You are welcome, Lord ...?
- I am Rasec, my lord. Rasec Dawnstar.

She walked to the next door, went inside and sat on the bed, taking out a piece of literature. She read for most of the rest of the night.

For Glarin and Goldie I have made these: two rings of mithril and ruby, in the same fashion. I have seen your infatuation, and I suggest you let these remind yourselves of each other. Lossandanduwen, for you I have made these: twin emerald daggers akin to the emeralds found in Kheled-zaram- the Mirrormere in your tongue. They remind me of you, for they are green like your kin, and sharp, simliar to your personality," he handed the items to each of his friends in turn. "Ah, do not think I have forgotten Sarin and Celebrien! For the monk I have these: sandals of dragon scales, and harder than stone. However, you will find that they allow movement with ease, and deliver a force more powerful than any footwear of Elf or Man. His expectations for us have gone up a great deal in the past weeks, the weapons we are training to use are more difficult to wield, and his tests are hell," Glarin replied to her question. "I wonder where everyone else is right now, there classes must be over by this time. Ah well, alright I'm going to finish all of the extra work I have, I'll see you at dinner." Glarin gave her a long kiss good-bye and then went off to his room.

Lossenandunewen swept into the dorms. She walked straight down the halls, still damp from the lake. She stopped again, at a door that was slightly ajar, and heard whispering once again. She strained her ears to hear anything that could tell her who it was, or what was so hushed. She soon gave up and walked to her room. She changed into some dry clothes, a deep purple robe, and laid onto her bed.

As the sun rose on a new day, Lita Shinahn Brandybuck, a hobbit, entered the dorms of Heren Istarion. The elaborate halls were silent except for the sound of a few soft snores. Lita's unshod feet made no noise on the polished floor, but a soft clickity clickity clickity could be heard echoing in the corridors. It was the sound of Licale, Lita's little dirt-brown terrier, trotting to keep up with his mistress.
Lita found the empty room that she had been directed to and entered it. It was on the bottom floor of the building, and it had cozy, round little windows looking out at the front yard. It was a rather small room, but Lita didn't mind. Licale seemed comfortable enough in it, for as soon as he entered the little dog jumped onto the hobbit-sized bed. "Licale, get off of there," she whispered, not wanting to disturb any of the other students. The terrier obeyed and jumped off, only to curl up on the rug in the middle of the room. Lita sighed. "You just love to get in my way, don't you?" she said. "Dumb dog." Lita didn't really mean this, however. As much as she loved to complain about her dog, he was really her only true friend.
Lita unpacked her things and sat on the rug petting Licale, waiting for the sun to rise.

Goldie woke up slowly, groggily remembering that she had fallen asleep on the couch. As that thought entered her brain she lurched to awareness, jumping off the couch and running down the halls to her room, swiftly cleaning herself and changing her clothes and speedily went to work on the homework she was supposed to have done the night before. She was distracted, however, by a newcomer. Goldie went to the room next to hers and knocked on the door.

Goldie heard a small voice from the other side of the door respond, "Just a moment!"
Lita jumped up and began shoving Licale under her bed. "Go on, you dumb mutt, I don't know if you're even allowed to be here!" Lita whispered to her dog. "Get under there! You might get us in trouble!"
After the terrier was stowed away under the bed Lita answered the door. The young woman stooping in the low doorway smiled warmly. Lita waited for her to speak.

She said this all fairly quickly, and Goldie was surprised at how hyperactive the hobbit was. "Thank you for your kind offer. Anytime I have questions I will be sure to go to you."
Just as Lita finished introducing herself, Licale decided he was fed up with hiding. The little dog ran out from under Lita's bed and began sniffing Goldie's ankles. "Licale! No!" the hobbit said exasperatedly. "I TOLD you to stay under the bed, you dumb dog! Now everybody's gonnaknowthatyou'rehereandwhatwillIdo?!?" The last part of Lita's scolding was said so fast that Goldie didn't know what to make of it. Licale, however, seemed to ignore the hobbit and looked up at Goldberry, wagging his little brown tail.

"Yes I think I'll be okay, I just need to go to the infirmary and get this taken care of," Glarin said, looking at the slash across his arm. But then he tried to get up and realized that his shelf had fallen across his leg, he tried to twist his leg out of it and there was a loud *Crack*, "that didn't feel good." Glarin said, and his ankle appeared to have been broken. "Can someone help get this off of me?"

"I'll help," Lita said, and without asking Glarin she bounded onto the foot of his bed. She began examining the shelf, which was almost twice her size. Her movements were jerky and full of energy, which made Lita remind Glarin of a squirrel. There were still a few items on the shelf. Lita picked up each item with care and grace that she had not shown before, and delicately set each item on the chair in the corner of the room before bounding back to the shelf to remove more items. Once the shelf was clear, Lita hopped off the foot of the elf's bed and grabbed the end of the shelf that was dangling off the bed. She began to tug on the massive peice of wood, but a yelp from Glarin made her stop. "Sorry! I'm sorry," she said. "Pulling it like that must be tweaking your ankle, yes? Now how, how, how to move this thing?"

Lita whirled around to face the other person who had spoken to Glarin. "Greetings!" the hobbit said with her energetic smile. "I do not believe we have been introduced. I am Lita Shinahn Brandybuck, but you can call me Lita. And who might you be?"
Hearing the loud crash of the shelf hitting the floor, Celebrien rolled off his bed and onto the floor. He sat rubbing his head, then quickly threw on some clothes and washed his face. He entered Glarin's room a few minutes later, and was surprised to see him hobbling around the room.
"Oh Glarin, that cut looks really bad! Here, I have a bandage in my pouch."
He carefully wound the bandage around Glarin's arm, then stepped back.
"There, good as new, but you should probably see the nurse about that ankle! What a great way to start the day, huh?"
Then, apparently noticing the newcomer for the first time Celebrien introduced himself.
"Hello, Mistress Hobbit, I am Celebrien of Nan Elmoth. What is your name?"

Anyway I am Sarin Skysight glad to meet you."
Suddenly, Chokang came barging through the door, his axe weilded high in the air, shouting something about Balrogs. When he realised what had happened though, he breathed a sigh of relief.
"You lot will be the death of me one day!" he muttered.

"Yes I don't know when they will start though which is an annoyance for me. I am already wellversed in the ways but I can always use the help. Anyway Ewen why worry about such a small miss? You will still hit your target and accomplish whatever you were trying to do which is most likely to kill someone."

"Well sorry to disappoint Sarin, but I would never kill unless it was absolutely necessary, or it was an orc. In which case, i've already killed a few in my toils. Hand to hand combat sounded wonderful, but i'm much better with my bow. That doesn't mean i'm weak though."
Lossenandunewen looked out the window to the stars, and realized that since the sun went down the only light in the room was from the fire. She looked at Sarin, the shadows dancing across his face, and she stopped for a second. The turned her head quickly to celebrien.
"Are your teachers rough?"

"The thought never crossed my mind I myself have only killed three beings in my time, and I never intend to kill another one. I can disable, but I would never kill again. Not even an orc. For they did not choose to be what they are it simply was." Sarin sat back in his chair feeling confused about why Lossenandunewen kept avoiding eye contact he sat chewing on it in his mind.
