*sighs* wow, Shadowfax, you really can draw! I luv the shield, the horse is so rohannish, and Merry and Pippin are just gorgeous.
I have absolutely no criticisms... just praise! Well done!!:D

Very nice. How long did that take you to do? I mean with all that shading it must have takin forever. When I draw a pic. It is really easy to draw a char. But the shading has got to be the worst. There is like no way around it. *sighes* Well keep up the good work!

Here's a pic I did on request for an RPG for someone who has really low standards of artists they ask- I hate watercolours! And coloured pencils! Can you tell? ;-)

And here's a remake of my Shadowfax pic...

(Legolas speaking) ... 'See how they run! There is Hasufel, And there is my friend Arod beside him. But there is another that strides ahead: A very great horse. I have not seen his like before.' 'Nor will you again,' said Gandalf. 'That is Shadowfax. He is the chief of the Mearas, lords of horses, and not even Theoden, King of Rohan, has ever looked on a better. Does he not shine like silver, and run as smoothly as a swift stream? He has come for me: the horse of the White Rider. We are going to battle together.'

Nice stuff, I especially like Shadofax, as far as the lates ink sketch goes it's looking good just watch thoes proportions Theoden's head is looking a little large in comparison to the horses head, when in doubt you can always look up some reference online. Keep posting!

Hi all- these aren't exactly 'fine art' but I'm rather proud of them. I've put two short stories up on my Library at Wyvern's in elfwood. Don't worry! You can read both in under two minutes they're not that long! Here's the link.

Is that you?

Shadowfax
02-19-2003, 11:59 PM
Where? In my elfwood gallery? Yup. Only I don't really look like that- my mum made get proffesional pics taken for my senior year in HS, and the makeup person put about 5 ibs of makeup on, and gave me a 'fro. Which was pretty fun, actually. I had to go to a party right after the session and my BEST FRIEND didn't recognise me! (I looked like a hooker) and she says: "I think you want the frat party down the street...this is a church group!"

Here's another p&i- it's a WIP and is going to be my first foray into coloured pencils- I have the coloured version about 1/4 done. It's from a scene in the book The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, where the unicorn meets the butterfly, and he tells her about the red bull.

How old are you Shadowfax?
I thought you were like 15.

Shadowfax
02-21-2003, 12:32 AM
No, I'm eighteen. Isenho's 15. Oh! Did you think I just cut out a pic from a fashion magazine and used it for my personal pic, or something? Heeheehee!

Wonko The Sane

No...I thought maybe it was someone else's page and they let you post on it.

Shadowfax
03-02-2003, 01:38 AM
Ok, here's a photo of a big thing I did awhile back- it's a unicorn, obviously, but the medium is drywall- yup, the stuff walls are made out of. I put it on particle board wet, and then carved into it with a paintbrush handle, and used a comb for the mane, tail, horn, and waves. The eye is a purple rhinstone.

Wonko The Sane

So that's a picture of a wall somewhere?!

AMAZING!!

Shadowfax
03-06-2003, 10:22 PM
No, it's not actually a wall, though I suppose it could be built into one, it's just made out of drywall compound. It is heavy enough for a wall! About 30 lbs. My parent's won't hang it up because of that, they're afraid it's too heavy. (It would also ruin our western themed living room, but they won't say that)

Shadowfax
03-12-2003, 07:39 AM
OK, i've just updated my elfwood gallery, the address is in my signature. I'm not posting the pic here, even though it is of a hobbit. Sam, actually. But said hobbit is in, ahem, deshabille. there's nothing naughty, it's just a figure study for an upcoming piece, but in deference to our guild's rules, I won't post it directly on here.

So, if you're old enough to know what deshabille means, please go visit my elfwood gallery and tell me what you think!

Shadowfax
03-16-2003, 12:41 AM
Sam yelled and brandished Sting, but his little voice was drowned in the tumult. No one heeded him. The great doors slammed to. Boom. The bars of iron fell into place inside. Clang. The gate was shut. Sam hurled himself against the bolted brazen plates and fell senseless to the ground.

This is my first attempt at coloured pencils...I don't really like the way it came out. Blech. I hope by posting this I don't ruin my artistic reputation.

Just one suggestion from a visitor about the "reunion" sketch: you have made your background too "busy"; it fights with your figures and takes the eye away from the central focus of you work. A simple suggestion of large blocks of stone with perhas just a small amount of shading to break up a completely blank background would have worked, but what you have is too much and confuses the eye.

Also, you should have made your central figures larger. It might be that you felt the need to "spruce up" the background because there was so much of it. If the figures had been larger (or the size of the field smaller so that the figures were larger in proportion to it), then I don't believe you would have felt "obligated" to be preoccupied with the wall behind them to quite the same degree.

Of course, the fact that you are working in shades of black and white also causes a problem since colored figures would have stood out considerably against the neutral stone backdrop.

Well done! I hope you don't mind the comments from a visitor!

Shadowfax

Thankyou for your comments- I was going for photorealism, so I really couldn't have made the wall dreamy, but this is something that plagues black and white pictures- it is nearly impossible to have a high level of detail and not have your central characters blend into the background. If it was a colour pic, I would have simply done the wall in a different colour scheme than the central characters.

But thankyou for your comments, I'll work on that, and I appreciate you taking the time to look at my gallery.

Yes, but you don't have to be "bland" or leave out the detail. Take a look at pictures of some "stone" walls, especially ones in the great Central American Indian cities where huge stone blocks were piled on each other without mortar and were cut so perfectly that they just "sat" there with only a thin line to mark where each block ended. You could have created such a wall (I'm sure the technology was there) and just had the thin demarkation lines with slight shading and very light indications that the stones were not altogether smooth (even a few straggling ivy vines in a corner would not overwhelm your subject matter).

I keep a few (thousand) scrap books with pictures that might come in handy at some time or other. These includes commercial photo shoots showing people sitting around fires at night, trees, stone buildings, streams, waterfalls, smoke, clouds, and, of course, interesting faces etc. ad nauseum. (Old photo magazines are great for these as are "injured" photo and travelogue books that they sell at used book stores; old National Georgraphics are also a gold-mine of useful photos.) These are absolutely essential as references in your work! So many artists believe that the greats just "drew" or painted directly from their minds to the canvas or paper! Not so! They all used models not only of people, but fabric, light patterns, glasswear, silverwear, plant material etc. as tools of their art. Just trying to "pull something out of your memory or imagination" will result in dissatisfaction since you don't have anything concrete to look at, but, rather, an elusive "memory" that sometimes doesn't translate right down to the "nitty-gritty" of the details. The artist's imagination is for the composition of the picture, not the various elements that make up that composition.

Also, if you're working in b&w, you can take any colored photo and reproduce it on a regular copy machine (you may have to "tinker" with the values). You will get a b&w repro of whatever it is (including stone walls) which will assist you (in the beginning) in translating color into shades of grey.

You have the tools, you just need to have some reference materials and the ability to remember that in art (as in film), sometimes "less is more".

Shadowfax
03-18-2003, 03:02 PM
I actually have 4 file cabinets with photos for reference- And Natl. Geo. is my Bible! My Dad got it for years before he died. The cabintes are 1) people 2) scenery/backgrounds 3) animals 4) inanimate objects and theres lots of different categories they're subdivided into. I'm working on how to post a really big acrylic painting I did of some Indian women and a camel I painted with reference to a Natl Geo. I'll have to experiment with photographing it.

But no- I'm afraid I didn't use a reference in this one, other than making 2 of my friends pose! ;)

My only critique is that unicorns don't have horse's tails. They have a sort of lion's tail but the "brush" on the end is much larger and almost curly. so it would be a length of "naked" tale (covered with hair, but not long hair) and then at the end you would have a large "puff" of hair. Of course, this is an zoological critique, not an artistic one; artistically, I have no criticism, the drawing is excellent (and a robust fellow he certainly is!)

Doomseeker
03-19-2003, 04:28 PM
People are always very stubborn when it comes to accepting someones horse drawings. They say "It has to be perfect" as far as muscle tone and proportions and such. I'd have to say that I have no such complaints. Keep em coming. You have tons of LOTR drawings.

yeah, I normally do classical uini's like that, (this one and the one in drywall are the exceptions) but when I tried to put that sort of tail in a perky position on this one, it kept looking like he had to make manure, so I opted for a more modern, "Children's book" look to him. And yes, he is VERY robust- chubby, I would say. If he doesn't go on a diet soon he's going to get laminitis! (I wonder if cloven hoofed animals can get that?)

Old Took's great-granduncle Bullroarer, who was so huge (for a hobbit) that he could ride a horse. He charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram in the Battle of the Green Fields, and knocked their knig Golfimbul's head clean off with a wooden club. It sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit-hole, and in this way the battle was won and the game of Golf invented at the same moment.

--J.R.R. "On the Road to Dunharrow"

Sometimes, where the way was broader he had ridden at the king's side, not noticing that many of the Riders smiled to see the two together: the hobbit on his little shaggy grey pony, and the Lord of Rohan on his great white horse. Then he had talked to Theoden, telling him about his home and the doings of the Shire-folk, or listening in turn to tales of the Mark and its mighty men of old.

Bay coloring, which I think is cool cuz people usually only think of white arabians. *doesn't know why she felt like mentioning this, but oh well*

Yep- my friend's horse is just about the epitome of a classical Arabian. V.v. beautiful. But I'm afraid I prefer quarter horses and warmbloods. ;)

You guys are good!
I'm really into art too. I do cartoony

Anime. (I'm American) I also enjoy
sketching. And I LOVE horses!

Arabs Rule!
I'm back! Just so lazy most of the time, and so busy the rest so I don't get on here very often.

My Arab mare was bay, and if you EVER hear people say arabs can't jump tell them they talk rubbish... cuz my baby and I won the showjumping champs of South Africa. (About 4ft to 4ft6 I think, and my pony was 14.1hh).
Funny how I prefer Arabs and Warmbloods, and mares to anything else yet I end up with two thoroughbred geldings!!

By the way, that painting of the Road to Dunharrow is excellent! GREAT work! And the arab is just lovely, but nothing on my mare I'm afraid. ;)

I've missed this place!

"Fog On the Barrowdowns"
Tom shook his head, saying: ‘You’ve found yourselves again, out of deep water. Clothes are but a little loss, if you escape from drowning. Be glad my merry friends, and let the warm sunlight heat now heart and limb! Cast off these cold rags! Run naked on the grass while Tom goes a-hunting! ...The air was growing very warm again. The hobbits ran about for awhile on the grass, as he told them. Then they lay basking in the sun with the delight of those that have been wafted suddenly from bitter winter to a friendly clime, or of people that, after being long ill and bedridden, wake one day to find that they are unexpectedly well and the day is again full of promise.'

Ernil i Pheriannath
Pippin soon found himself arrayed in strange garments, all of black and silver. He had a small hauberk, its rings forged of steel, maybe, yet black as jet; and a high crowned helm with small raven-wings on either side, set in a silver star in the centre of the circlet. Above the mail was a short surcoat of black, but broidered on the breast in silver with the token of the Tree...He looked now, had he known it, verily Ernil i Pheriannath, the Prince of the Halflings, that folk called him; but he felt uncomortable.

Voyage to the Undying Lands
And the ship went out onto the High Sea and passed on into the West, unil at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water.

Shadowfax, that last one...of the Undying Land voyage thing: GORGEOUS! What is it done on and with what? It's soo beautiful...It really captures the moment.
The waves are a bit too "peaked"...I think something softer might suit the image better...but then again...it IS a voyage on the sea and I don't know much about those. :)
It's so gorgeous.
I also love the way the flag is flying in the "ernil y pherrianath" pic. :)

That is some very cool stuff there. Well done on the ship by the way.

*just watched Pirates again* Yeah, I'd make the waves a bit softer, and maybe more spread out and not so closely packed. Also, the ship needs to sit lower in the water, especially if it's carrying supplies in the hold.

I do love the sail though and the design of the ship!

I'm glad you guys liked them! When I did the sketch for the ship it looked OK, but when I transferred it to the paper I could see that it was too high..but couldn't really do anything about it. ;)

Well, here are two things: If the waves are going to be choppy like that it's best to have the ship lower in the water for reasons Tal mentioned...but actually, the ship looks like it could be small enough to sit fairly high up on the water (maybe not that high...but it wouldn't have to be much lower) since I'm comparing it with the proportion of the people in the ship...but if that were the case it should be softer waves...cos a small ship would die. :)

But I hate saying things like that cos they sound critical...and I'm not critical because the pic is gorgeous. :)

Well, if you people aren't critical, how will I know what to improve? ;)

And thanks- I'm glad you like it.
