Go and have a look how other authors would have written The Lord of the Rings.

One of the great What-if questions!
I personally think Hemingway would have done a great job:
" And earth moved."
What an understatement and still strong.

That's a great link, lol. :)
I can't comment much, as my class has only recently begun to read Hemingway: we read Hills Like White Elephants last time. I thought it was very interesting and complex. It really makes you think, both while reading it and afterwards.
I suppose that there might be as much much or even more detail in surroundings, but there would be more detail in acts and what the characters did.
Frodo clutched at the string around his neck with longing. His finger happened to peck the smooth, calling surface of the ring, and he muttered. He looked around him, and the embers glowed brightly and angrily in the small campfire. Aragorn stood at the opening of the cave, and looked outside, calmly. Sam by his side was shivering.
"Are they coming?"
"Yes," said Aragorn.
"Shall we die?"
"That is to be seen," said Frodo, and took his hand reluctantly from under his shirt. The cool metal gently struck his chest, but he ignored it and closed his eyes.
"What was that?"
"Imagination," said Aragorn, and sat down.
Or something like that, I don't know. I may have a more clear picture of Hemingway's writing style later next week.

:) some of those are great! Especially the A.A.Milne version:
" "What we're going to do," said Frodo, "is we're going to go on an expotition." " Genius! :D

This is frickin hilarious!
Lord of the Rings, by PG Wodehouse
"Sam, I've decided to go and overthrow the Dark Lord by tossing his jewellery into a volcano."
"Very good, sir. Should I lay out your crazy adventure garb? I presume that this will pose a delay to tea-time. I would remind your Hobbitship that your Great Aunt Lobellia Sackville-Baggins is expected for tea."
"Blast! I say, bother! How can a chap overthrow the Dark Lord? I suppose I will have to delay my campaign."
"Very good, sir. I believe you will be free in about a decade."
"I'll do it then. Make a note, Sam."
I liked the Dylan Thomas, too.

That is an excellent link, the best I have seen to date on this forum. Thank-you for bringing it to my attention..........Oscar Wilde cracks me up;
"He picked and pocketed a pretty prize, performing perfidious behaviour. How very noble, so like our own Lords and Masters"....
Wonderful
