View Full Version : Who is your favorite elf and why?

In reading the works of Tolkien, many elves are mentioned. Who is your favorite and why? Please make your explanations as thorough as possible.
Your choice should not be the character from the movie but from the books so don't just pick Legolas because you like the way he looks.

Carantalath you should have made it a poll with different choices on it, all well, too late now. But anyway guess who my favorite was? I pick him mainly because he's so cool and deserves more credit than he gets, and he saved Earendil's life when he died fighting that Balrog, and by saving Earendil's life he saved Middle-Earth. Of course if I was to look at it all like that I could also say he saved middle-earth by saving Frodo as well, but lets not get into that.:D ;)

No, there are too many elves to put on a poll...;)
Cirdan here. It is just that feeling. He is so wise and great....

I have to agree with you Anamatar, Cirdan is my second choice next to Glorfindel. And I voted for Cirdan on the "Who is the Greatest Elf Ever?" poll.;)

hhhmmm... well I am just starting The Silmarillion so I havent gotten that many Elves yet... of the ones I have read about in The Sil. and LOTR/Hobbit... I'd have to say hhmmmm.... well, Glorf. is cool just because he killed a balrog, but i havent read about him yet in The Sil. so all I have read about him is that he saved Frodo in LOTR and I dont know much about Cirdan either... just that he was the leader of a group of Elves, can't remember the name of the group...
Gah, now that I think about it, theres not any elves that I really know much about... Gil*Galad was an Elf, right? Well I'm saying him, just because he seems cool! haha
Maeglin
02-05-2003, 01:47 AM
It won't matter soon anyway Calimehtar. By the time you're done with the Sil there will be so many to choose from and so many names to try and remember that you won't be able to make up your mind. I've only read the Sil once and I always forget who is who and I always get confused between who is an elf and who is a man, its sooo confusing and frustrating!

Yeah, I remember the first time I tried reading it, I thought the Ainur were Elves and I thought the Children of Illuvatar were some type of special elf or something... WAS I SCREWED UP, OR WHAT?! I tried reading it in 6th grade why i was in the hospital visiting my dad one night, I ended up stopping at chapter 8 and never finished... I'm going to try to finish it now. I am only on like chapter 6 though.

I am fond of Gil-galad of Lindon, High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth. I have two elves: Cirdan, Gil-galad. The greatest Elves of the ages...
Calimehtar, finish the sil THEN give us your answer....
You know, Luthien wouldn't be a bad choice. How about Turgon? Finrod?;)
Maeglin

Stop it Anamatar you're going to confuse him, he doesn't know who they are yet, let him find out on his own.:D ;)

From inside Tolkien's work, to choose your favorite elf is a difficult choice. I have two favorites, but non of them derive from Tolkien's work however.
Both my favorite elves are from R.E.Feist's work, who may well be one of the most gifted writers to follow in Tolkien's footsteps.

lol Glorf. I actually have heard of all those Elves in LOTR. Gil*Galad from the Last Alliance, Luthien, I believe was an Elf who was in love with a man, right? and Cirdan brought Elves to Valinor.
(I think thats all right...)

I would say Feanor, cause he made the Silmaril, the Seeing Stones, and because it was his will and anger that led the Noldor back to Middleearth and to the Wars with Morgoth...
I like him not because he is good, but because he is one of the most interesting characters...

Felagund (Finrod Finarfin) is my favorite elf. The act of giving away his life to save Beren was one of the most selfless deeds. And becuase of his friendship with men.
Next comes Cìrdan. I always feel that the character of Cìrdan has been poorly explained. If indeed he was the Lord of Eagerlast and Brithimbor, he was by right the Ship-king of the Elves. He passed through all these ages and is probably more older then any living elf in Middle Earth. and Cirdan saw farther and deeper then anyother in Middle Earth.

Yes, I also like Feanor, but did he play a big role as a fighter? (I havent read that much of The Sil. yet. All I know about him is that he made the Silmarils and he lead the Noldor away from the Valar. And that he was crazily in love with his Silmarils, lol). But I wouldnt say he is my favorite.... (My favorite Valar is Tulkas!!!)

I think my favorite elf is either Fingolfin or Luthien. I like Fingolfin because he was brave enough to try to fight against Morgoth himself (though it wasn't the smartest thing to do, it was still brave) and I like Luthien because she did so many great things to be allowed to marry the man she fell in love with, even risking her own life.
I didn't post a poll because there are too many different elves to choose from and I didn't want to limit the ones you could choose from with a poll.

My favourite elf is probably Fingolfin too, because of his challenge to Morgoth and because he was brave enough to lead his people across Helcaraxe.

I agree with Lord Caelin about Feist. He's an excellant author too. I'd be interested to know who your favourite elf from his works is.

Gilgalad,
My two favorite elves from Feist's work are:
Caelis
Gorath
If you do not know why, then I suggest you re-read the books. ;)

You know i was just thinking (it's true, i was) that of all the Elves, Ingwe was probably the greatest who still lived at the end of the ME saga, if not ever, what with him being King of the Vanyar and all. It's strange that there isn't more info on him since Tolkien made him king of the most beloved of all the elf kindreds, and when you consider that he's been around since the first awakening of the elves you start to think that it's kind of weird that there's so little said about him. Sigh.

Well you knew It would come some day my favorite elf is the book Legolas. NOt the movie. I meen tht Orland ois very good looking and did an okay job on Legolas I just really like the book Legolas.
Glorfindels Gal
02-15-2003, 02:59 PM
I think the best elf is Glorfindel as well obviously. I was really annoyed that they cut him out of the film and the animated version as he is just so darn cool. I mean, come on, he killed as balrog and he was the one that came up with that...pre...(errm...cant remember the word)...well he said that a man couldnt kill the morgul king and he was right. thats why i think he is the best elf. The best female elf is Arwen, although im not too keen with the little added on bits of her in the film, no offence to liv tyler or any thing because she's great :)

Yeah...I know this isn't meant to be based on the movies, but it was really annoying that they killed Halidir in TTT, i mean if he has to be in it, can't he at least survive, not get stabbed in the back of the head or whatever

I know That was no fair Haldir was really kewl theri nad then he gets whacked in the back of the head!

Poor Haldir, and Poor Glorfindel, he didn't even make it to the movie! Lets hunt down PJ and yell at him about that!! Actually it wasn't his fault, I think he had someone planned to play Glorfindel, but evil Liv Tyler threatened to sue if she didn't get a bigger role in the movie, so they gave Glorfindel's role to Arwen!!!

I don't know so much about Luthien, but I do like the song of her. Aragon's singing it under the stars. Who can give me that lyric? Thanks!
anyway,my favourite elf is Legolas. why?hard to tell. but do I need a reason for like somebody?
Maeglin
02-25-2003, 12:28 AM
As long as your reason is not because you think he (or Orlando Bloom rather) is hot. If that is case then I shall have to ask you to die. :D lol no I wouldn't ask you to die, I would just argue to the death with you concerning him, because I am by far hotter than him!!!

Does anyone know who PJ was going to cast as Glorfindel then? I think it would be a hard role to cast and I'm interested to know who it would have really been...btw, Glorfindel1187, unless you have the pointy ears there is no way you can be as hot as Legolas hehehehee

Wow, I really have to keep up with more than the Rhun RPG. :D Liv Tyler threatened to sue if she didn't get a bigger part??!! I didn't know that! I would have to say that my favourite elf is Galadriel, because even though she was a women, she was wise and powerful and athletic. They even treated her like she was one of the men. Yay! Go her!:D

02-25-2003, 10:20 PM
Glorfindel's Gal I am not sure who was originally going to be casted as Glorfindel, possibly the person that played Haldir, or Gildor (he is in the extended version), it would be easy to do that and less costly.
And just one more thing Glorfindel's Gal, I'm afraid you cannot be my gal anymore! I am soooo hotter than Legolas!!!! Well I bet if they used Glorfindel in the movie you would all say that he is hotter because he's a more important elf so they'd have to make him better looking. Anyway, my girlfriend told me she didn't think Legolas was hot and that I am hotter than him, and that's what's important!!! None of your opinions matter! So there, I win!!! :D :p

They always seem to cut Glorfindel out of the movieds that they have done. For instance in the cartoon LOTR they usede legolas instead adn in LOTR they used Arwen(who i don't not like no offense to anybody who likes her)

Glorfindel1187, I think you must be an imposter as the real Glorfindel would most defintely have pointy ears, it was merely a test to check your real identity mwahahaaa...but yeah, no matter who played him in the movie I would always love him :p You on the other hand...if you are not the real Glorfindel of course I cannot be your gal hehehe

From LoTR my favorite is Legolas. I can't really explain why. I think it is because not much was written bout him which leaves me more room for my imagination.
From Sil I like Maedhros. He could have been a great leader of his people if that stupid oath hadn't kept getting in his way.

my fave elf is..hard legolas and galadriel
legolas, not cause he is cute or anythink (i aint shallow...no offence to any1) but cause of his fichting skill. bow and arrowz rule!!! and galadreil (cant spell) because she is cool. and i found it funny when her voice changed in FotR when frodo offered her the ring. that was cool tho

Aaye Mellonin!
My favorite elf is Luthien Tinuviel. She is in the Silmarillion. In my opinion she is better than Arwen, Legolas, Glorfindel, Elrond, or any of the elves. Pm me and I will tell you why! Or if you reply to this I will try to reply back!

Legolas, cause ever since I started reading the books I have been attarcted to him and his personality and he just always seemed so wonderful and smart so when they picked Orlando Bloom as him I have bee obbessed with him!
But my second fave is Arwen!
elfgirl
03-18-2003, 03:02 AM
OOhhhhhh... I cant possibly choose... Elrond the healer, wise and powerful... Arwen, Elrond's daughter, who chose love over immortality and peace... Legolas, the eyes and ears of the fellowship, one of the only elves to befriend a dwarf, and definitly the one with the best friendship... There are soo many others! Those are my top 3, though.

Personally, I got this thing for all Elves but I really like Legolas. No, it's not just because he looks good! I've liked him since I was eight and I'm now thirteen. I think it took a lot of guts to go with Frodo, especially since he hated Gimli. So there!
Scatha
03-26-2003, 12:59 PM
Legolas was among the first to be chosen for the quest, which Gimli was added to after he agreed to go. So the elf had little choice. He did not hate the dwarf, but was not kind towards him either. There's a difference there.

Legolas is cool. He could use a bow and his fighting skillz are sweet! Im writing a book and Kelonus a name I made up would be my 2nd fav. elf! :)
*sighs* My pet peeve is Legolas Lovers...:D
As far as Elves go, there are a lot to choose from but I would have to say that Fingolfin is one of my favorites, simply because of his fighting skills...Who else could take on Morgoth in single combat? Glorfindel and Ecthelion are also very cool, both slayers of Balrogs. As far as wisdom goes, I would have to say that Elu Thingol wins there.
Maeglin
04-07-2003, 06:43 PM
I agree with you 100% on Elu Thingol's wisdom, not even Elrond was as wise as him. IMHO;)

Fingolfin died. Seems like any Elf could take on Morgoth and die.
-Lasgalen
But could any Elf take on Morgoth and wound him seven times, that is the real question....:D If you think about it, even the Valar had trouble dealing with Melkor so Fingolfin must have been one heck of a warrior to last as long as he did.
Lasgalen
04-07-2003, 07:59 PM
That is true, Eol. He was one heck of a warrior. But so were many of his kin. Seems like greatness ran in the Finwe family genes.

and Glorfindel1187, i wont deny that i think that Orlando Bloom is very cute, and yes, I do think he made Legolas look very suave and wicked in the movies, but its like a girls nature nowadays to think Orlando is at least a tiny, microcsopic bit good looking. I do drool over Legolas, but because he's Bad-arse!!!!not neccesarily of the movies, but of the books too.

Ecthelion is definitely my favorite name (I think it sounds really cool), but I'd definitely have to say Glorfindel is my favorite Elf. For one thing, he's an Elf included in the Lord of the Rings trilogy whose history can be traced back some 6 or 7 thousand years to Gondolin where he fought and died killing a Balrog and was sent back to Middle-Earth and led the Elves in the battle that routed the Witch King from Fornost, and then he came and helped Frodo to get successfully to Rivendell.
Personally I think that Elrond, Glorfinel, Elladan and Elrohir should have all been part of the Fellowship along with the other nine. Glorfindel, having already fought a Balrog before to defend others while they escaped, would certainly have turned and fought, and I would guess that Elrond would also stand and fight, and unwilling to abandon their father Elladan and Elrohir would stand and fight, and then I doubt that Gandalf could have restrained Aragorn and Boromir from also fighting, and then most suredly Legolas and Gimli would be unwilling to run and would themselves fight. That would have been really sweet. Three Kings, five princes and one lesser god-like spirit against one lesser god-like spirit. I think they would have won. But now I'm rambling on and on and I should stop now before it gets out of hand.
