Brothers And Sisters of the Guild:

The Ranks:
Level 1) Novice - entry level with no test or requirements
Level 2) Apprentice - basic first level rank requiring knowledge of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (Test required)
Level 3) Journeyman - Requires reading of the Silmarillion (Test required)
Level 4) Sr. Journeyman - Requires reading of the Unfinished Tales (Test required)
Level 5) Expert - Requires reading Letters and some HoMe (Test required)
Level 6) Master - Requires extensive knowledge of all of Tolkien's works. (Extensive test required) Also, this rank will likely require either an advanced skill in Quenya or a high degree of knowledge about the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien (and when I say high degree of knowledge, reading Carpenter's biography isn't enough. My Tolkien test will be a real beast ;)) However, Grond and the rest of the leadership of the Guild (and leaders who are only nominal, such as myself ;)) have yet to reach an "official" position about this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So far, only a relative handfull of Guild members have indicated what rank they seek to test for, or to defend. The only ones are:

Grond- Expert (Untill I can convince him that if he isn't a Master Tolkienologist NONE of us have any hope of that rank ;))
Beleg_strongbow- Senior Journeyman
Anamatar IV- Senior Journeyman
gilgalad(The Irish one ;))- Senior Journeyman
Celebrien- Senior Journeyman
Lhunithiliel- Senior Journeyman
Gate7ole- Journeyman
Finduilas- Journeyman
Gil-Galad(The Bulgarian one;))- Senior Journeyman
Goldmare- Apprentice
Froggum- Apprentice

This means that thirty-something members still haven't gotten up with me about this. Everyone, please let me know as soon as possible what your plans are here! I'd really like to get this part of my new testing gig out of the way. I've said before that I'd like to get through the Apprentice and Journeyman tests first, but I'm more than willing to test anyone going for a rank below Master this weekend. If you have any questions, please send me a PM, or an e-mail, or get up with me on MSN Messenger. All of the relevant addresses are in my profile. Anyone who is thinking about trying for Master, please PM me so we can discuss the specifics (if the rest of the tests are thought of as exams, the Master test will be more like a PHD candidate's orals).

Thank you

Test me for Master (but only the part about Quenya that I'm currently learning). Just kidding of course. I don't think that they are many people in this forum generally that can be considered Masters.
As for me, just a Journeyman please.

Brothers and Sisters Of The Guild:

I'm quite pleased with the number of you who have already gotten in touch with me about the tests, and I hope that those of you who haven't yet will contact me at their earliest convenience.

I am pleased to announce that tommrow the testing will officially begin, as Gate7ole, Finduilas and Beleg_Strongbow will be taking the tests. I will have time to test several others tommorrow, so if that would be good for your schedule, please send me a PM or talk to me on MSN or AIM as soon as you can.

On behalf of the Guild, I'd like to wish the best of luck to Finduilas, Gate7ole and Beleg_Strongbow, and to every single Guild member on the tests.

FoolOfATook,

I am not yet a member of this guild, but I'd like to test for the Apprentice, having read the books multiple times. I have read the silmarillion, but just once so far. Should I pass the test, then i'd be willing to join the guild and prove myself worthy of the title.

Well, I'm an Expert now, but I see i have to read the Letters. I don't think I can find them so maybe I should be now a Sr. Journeyman?

FoolOfATook
02-18-2003, 02:14 AM
Okay, I'm glad to announce that this evening, I'll be doing the first rounds of testing. Scheduling is first come, first serve- whoever responds to me over MSN Messenger first gets to test first. I should be on pretty much non-stop after 8:00 PM EST. Tonight, I'll only be doing tests over MSN Messenger, and I'll only be doing tests for Sr. Journeymen and lower. Since I can only think of one member who has their eyes set on Expert right now, I don't think that this will be too much of an issue. I'll hopefully have time to test five or six Guildmembers tonight, and that's a conservative estimate.

My MSN username is ncsutook@hotmail.com
If I'm in the process of testing someone, my status will be "Busy", if my status isn't "busy", then I'm free to test someone.

Thanks for your cooperation and good luck on the tests.

Could you be so kind and alow me to take the apprentice test. Thank you for your doing.

First things first- On Monday, two Guild members in very good standing challenged for rankings, and it is with a good deal of pleasure that I announce that Anamatar IV has earned the rank of Senior Journeyman, and Gate7ole has earned the rank of Journeyman. Both passed the tests in a most convincing manner, and truly earned their ranks.

Secondly- This Friday, starting around 6:00 PM EST, I'll be free to test any and all comers. If Friday evening, or Friday night, or even early on Saturday morning is a good time for you, either PM to set up a time, or just send me an instant message over MSN Messenger whenever my status isn't "Busy" and we'll go ahead and get your test out of the way. Unfortunately, I still don't have tests that I'm fully comfortable with for the Expert and Master ranks, but everyone else I'm more than prepared for.

Thirdly- I don't have a third point. Now I'm just deliberately wasting your time. ;)

Good Luck to everyone, and if you bump into Gate7ole or Anamatar IV, don't forget to congratulate them on their impressive test performances.

At your service,
FoolofATook, esquire

Well, esquire, I don't mind your lingering with the expert tests, since obviously I'll lower my rank:) The longer it takes you to make them up, the longer I'll retain my expertship:D

And, now seriously, I'd like to congratulate you on the hard job you've undertaken. I guess it's not easy hanging here all friday night! So thank you on the behalf of the whole Guild.

I have a few questions:

*I don't have MSN Messenger I only have AIM, will I still be allowed to take tests?

*Are all tests different for the same level i.e. two people are testing for Journeyman, will they both have different tests?

*And is their a time limit on tests?

Gil-Galad
02-21-2003, 01:26 AM
FoolOfATook,I'm sorry I wasn't in i-net last week to pass the test.As you probably know I've been ill and I don't have the physical ability to pass it.When I get better and have some more time I'll inform you.Just prepare the test for me and when I pm you give it to me.

FoolOfATook
02-21-2003, 04:51 AM
*I don't have MSN Messenger I only have AIM, will I still be allowed to take tests?

Yes. I've got AIM (ncsutook is my id), but I never go on it. We can set up a time through private messages.

*Are all tests different for the same level i.e. two people are testing for Journeyman, will they both have different tests?

Okay, here's how it works- In my notebooks, and on my computer, I have hundreds out different questions, and everyone's test questions are drawn from this. I pretty much prepare each person's test individually, usually picking the questions I'll ask them right before I give them their test. There are some questions that I like so much that nearly everyone will have them.

*And is their a time limit on tests?

Yes and no. The way I give the tests, I ask you one question at a time, but I'm more than willing to let you pass on a question and return to it later, and I won't try to rush you through the test. I don't ask you the next question until you either answer the one before you, or announce your intentions to pass on it. Of course, if you spend 15 minutes on every question, I might begin to get suspicious.... ;)

When I get better and have some more time I'll inform you.Just prepare the test for me and when I pm you give it to me.

No problem Gil-Galad.

FOAT is it possible that you will be avalable to take the tests next week?

Absolutely.

As I've mentioned to a few people in Private Messages, this Saturday I'm planning on freeing up a big chunk of time to administer tests. Now that the semester has begun to really pick up, I'm obligated to be a bit more stingy with my free time, so I'm trying to decide what kind of time-frame would be the best in terms of testing the most possible people. So, I'm asking everyone who A) Feels ready to take their ranking test now and B) Also has some free time this Saturday to post a message in this thread, saying which test they plan on taking and listing the times when they would be able to take the test. Since we're an international group, I think it best if people posted the hours when they could take the test in Greenwich Mean Time. To figure out the difference between your time and GMT, just look at the very bottom of the thread, where it says what time it currently is. It'll tell you how many hours of difference there are between your time and GMT. For example, as I write this it is 2:56 PM, EST. This is -5 Hours from GMT, where it is currently 7:56 PM. This is just one of those things where, by making everyone's individual task a bit harder, it make's the group's task easier, if you follow me.

So, to sum up. If you want to take your ranking test this Saturday, post a message like this:

Name: Foolofatook
Test: Sr. Journeyman
Times: 2:00 PM-11:PM, GMT.

One final note: I'm still haven't finished creating an "Expert" test that I'm comfortable with, so I'll only be able to test aspring Apprentices, Journeymen and Sr. Journeymen. However, since I can only think of one person who has indicated to me that they want to try for the "Expert" rank, and no one who has even mentioned considering trying for "Master", I don't think that this will be too large of an inconvenience. Besides, any aspiring Experts should be glad of any extra time I give them to prepare ;)

As always, any questions, concerns, ideas, hate mail, fan mail or bribery offers can be expressed to me through a private message, or by finding me on MSN Messenger under the username ncsutook@hotmail.com

Thanks for your cooperation and patience.

At your service,
FoolofATook

Alright, some stupid questions.

1) How many questions are on a test, say, for Journeyman?

2) What exactly does a test entail? How do I go about it?

3) Do I have to have IM?

FoolOfATook
03-27-2003, 03:36 AM
1) How many questions are on a test, say, for Journeyman?

From the very begining, Grond and I decided on 15 questions per book on the tests. I'm this close to officially reducing that number to ten questions for each book on the Apprentice test, but to answer your question, the Journeyman test has a total of 75 questions, with one extra credit question.

2) What exactly does a test entail? How do I go about it?

So far, I've given all of the tests over MSN Messenger. The tests entail a series of short answer questions, although I am toying with the idea of varying the formats some, perhaps to include some sort of a short essay question on the higher level tests. I'm a long way away from making up my mind on this, though. The way the tests have worked so far is fairly simple- I ask a question, and then the person being tested either answers the question, asks me to clarify the question, or passes on the question.

3) Do I have to have IM?

Well, I suppose that if there's some sort of problem preventing you from being able to take the test over a messenger, or you simply can't bring yourself to take the test over a messenger, then other arrangements can be, well, arranged. I think that this would be done on a case-by-case basis.

I hope that helps. If anyone else has questions, please let me know.

Perhaps we can all sit back awhile and let FoaT deal with his school work. It is more important that he passes those tests than that we get our Guild rankings. The school year has a couple of months to run (most UK exams are over by mid-June; I believe the US school year is similar), and he could do without this pressure right now.

I have only two things to say here.

1. Rank Testings are pretty much open again. Tests for Expert and Master levels do not exist yet, but since I'm not sure that anyone is even interested in taking those tests yet, I'm focusing more on working on the lower tests.

2. Sunday night/Monday morning (the difference between America and Bulgaria), Gil-Galad earned the rank of Sr. Journeyman, so big congratulations go to him. He passed the test easily, displaying impressive knowledge. :D

It's a great honor (and surprise) to have you with us Lantarion!:) The tests are administered via MSN or AOL Instant Messenger. Just to give you an idea of how hard they are, I passed by:

Reading UT once (probably should have read it twice)
Reading The Silmarillion twice
Reading Lord Of The Rings three times (probably should have read it four times)
Reading The Hobbit three times

That's for the Sr. Journeyman test. Lhun, I know you can easily pass that test, and probably the as-of-yet not created Expert test with a little work!

OK...maybe it's a silly question, but...
How many times is it enough to read book(s) when you want to pass the tests (for example--Apprentice)?

Eriol
06-19-2003, 01:38 AM
Oh, I'd say if you have read all of them some 17 times it is enough.

:D ;)

Seriously, if you have a good memory and are an attentive reader, once should be enough. But who wants to read them once only???

Lantarion
06-19-2003, 06:54 PM
I'm feeling really insecure about my LotR-test.. I haven't read it in a year, and I will have to remember facts off the top of my head..! :( I asked FoaT to postpone it, but I just started to re-read the Sil, and then I'll be on the Kalevala.. Blah!

Lhunithiliel
06-22-2003, 06:44 AM
Well, you all know that unfortunately FoaT left the Guild and this means that now we shall have to do sth. about the testing-ranking system.

Back in the "Elder Days" ;) :D when the questions to form up the tests were being gathered, Gate7ole and I covered a part of this work. I still have these on my computer.

The thing is that now we shall have to gather more questions in order to form up the new tests, as Took obviously will keep those from the old tests.

Therefore, here is what I suggest:

PM me with any number of question on any book and I will thus form up a question bank.
I am thinking of some opportunity that can let each member test her/himself independently ...but this is just an idea I have to discuss with some people.

So, I will be waiting for your questions.

Books to be covered:
The Hobbit; The LOTR, the Silmarillion, the HoMe volumes; the Letters; other works by T.

I count on your assistance! :)

Gil-Galad
06-22-2003, 06:39 PM
I wonder what was the reason for FOAT's leaving the Guild?!Will he come back some day?:( :(
By the way I have a suggestion concerning the tests and rankings.First of all we need of a person who can be very often online in MSN Messenger,a person who can test those who wish as soon as possible.
From what I have seen so far such person is Fiduilas. She is almost every evening online and also nights, and mornings and afternoons.......What is more, she is now in Summer Holiday till September 15th and that means she will be able to be online even more often.:) ;) than all of us.
What would you say about my suggestion?Shall we give her the chance to test all of us?or at least those who want to be tested?

Scatha
06-22-2003, 10:29 PM
Wel, I know next to nothing about Finduilas, but however can concur that she is online almost every night.

So if she is willing to perform the tests, then by all means let her.

Finduilas

I'm honoured to hear that you find me appropriate for this Rank. And I think that if you give me the chance I won't let you down.I'm very often on-line actually as GG said every night and I will be able to be on-line even more often now after my exam on Tuesday.

APPRENTICE?!!! Come on,as Fin said you are at least for Sr.Journeman status.I've passed the test and I can assure you, you'll pass it with closed eyes!
But,now we have to decide something, actually Lhun has make the decision. If we give that chance to Finduilas,is she going to become a Dep.?
Anyway,I think that Fin should take care of her new duties as soon as possible cause there are some members who still do not have any status,or they want to change theirs.(Lhun, that's for you,are you going to pass the test for at least "Expert"?)

Oh, my fair Finduilas, if only this could have been the problem!!!
It is wonderful if you could organize the testing procedure, but the most important thing now is to gather more questions in order to form the tests!
So far only Manveru has sent me a list of questions on the "Hobbit" and I thank him! :D

We need more! Much more!

And for those who will be sending me questions, don't forget to mark them as being "Apprentice" level or "Journeman" level etc.

Only when we have our question bank filled we can think of making the lists of questions for the respective test for each rank and ONLY then we can proceed.

Untill then, all members of the Guild - just feel free to contribute and don't mind the rank! ;) :D

You will have your tests, don't worry! :D

Gil-Galad
06-23-2003, 03:52 PM
.......and I have a suggestion about the questions.
When we fill our bank with question we'll use them for the tests, but after some time all of them will be used more than several times. So they will have to be changed. That is why I suggest every 6 months or every 3 months to fill the bank with new questions.

I am discussing with Gate7ole (as a computer expert) the possibility and the opportunity of making the tests computerized. :)

It IS possible to make it, Gate says, but still there are a few things to be decided and well thought of.

Therefore, I wish you could keep on sending to me the questions
BUT!!!!!!!
REMEMBER THIS:

1/ The questions should be formulated in such a way that they could have a "Multiple choice" - answer. Thus the person who is passing the test shall have to chose only one of the given options.

2/ When you send me the questions, please, send me the correct answer too ;) :D.

3/ Group your suggested questions for levels - i.e. "Journeman", "Sr.Journeman" etc.

AND PLEASE........... SEND QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!! :)

Only if I have enough number of them I will be able to start building up the groups for each test and provide it to the computer wizard Gate7ole to make the computerized version.

Scatha, I have just found out that you can not ONLY draw fantastically well :D, but you're also a computer specialist!!!! Would you care to contact Gate and discuss the computerized opportunity for the testing-ranking system? You both will certainly have valuable opinions to exchange!! :D

All right...

Lhunithiliel
06-25-2003, 05:17 PM
Well, at the very beginning of the present thread there should be an explanation on the Ranks and knowledge on which of Tolkien writings one should have in order to obtain a respective rank.

As for the difficulty of the questions:

Compare for example:
>> "When was Bilbo's birthday?" - Novice level
to
>> "How many direct heirs did Durin have and what were their names?" - Journeman
to
>> "Where did Eorl take his Oath?" - Senior Journeman
etc.

It is all related to the books one has read.

Actually, you mentioned them- you didn't ask for them. But nevermind. If the Guild wants the questions, I'll spend the next week typing up the contents of my testing notebook, and formatting them into something that people other than myself understand. If you aren't interested in them, then that's fine- it saves me the work of trying to organize them. I, for one, will be glad when the tests come out. I should try for Journeyman, or Sr. Journeyman. Goodness knows, I've read The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales countless times. I only have some of the HoMe books, so I can't really go further than that until I come by the rest of them. Now being given the job of the new Deputy on New Members and Ranking and Testing ;), I would like to push you all a bit. ;)

First of all, I want to invite the new members :

-Finrod
-Morgoth
-Shaky_the_Mohel

to take the ranking test and prove their knowledge, which, I have no doubt! , is a lot! ;)
After that, please, report to me of the Rank you have taken and after the one-month period, if you are accepted, you will have the chance to use your Rank officially. ;)
I also want to invite ALL members who have no ranking passed to take the test and get one! :)

Secondly, the other members, please, try again and again...;) You can do it! No lower than Expert, you know... ;) But if you wish no higher Rank, that 's ok.:)

And finally, please post here the rankings you have passed!!!

Thank you and GOOD LUCK!!!

Ok, here are the results of the testing period for two of our 'candidate'-members.;) They are all based on the voting of some of the honourable members of the Guild of Tolkienology!

Morgoth:

WELCOME, MORGOTH! ;)
You're accepted in our honourable Guild and given the status Proud Member of the Guild of Tolkienology! Please (if you want;)) insert this message in your signature and as well as your Rank passed (Apprentice in your case;)).
Also, I expect you to take the Higher tests too and pass them;).

Finrod:

Unfortunately, I have to anounce that Finrod has not passed the testing period. However, he still has the chance to reapply and prove his wilingness to be part of this place in another one-month testing period.:)

The two members will receive PM's with the reasons for their acceptance/refusal of membership.

In the second test, it is asked "Which battle started the First Age of Middle-earth?" As far as I can tell there was no battle that STARTED it, unless you count what happened at the Noldor's return.

The First Age began when the sun rose for the first time, no?

By the way, the abc choices of some of the questions are out of order, and one is abb instead of abc.

There appears to be no way to check the answers, it's pass or not.

The way this test is set up doesn't really make it seem to be worth going on with — disappointing.

I thinkt that the question actually asks which Battle starts in the First Age...

As for the answers, when you take a level, in the end there're shown the questions you have gone wrong and if there are NO questions it means they are ALL right. But if there are there're also marks which show which are the correct ones and which are the wrong you have chosen. That's it.
The quiz has it's mistakes as every machine and we will fix them , but it checks your knowledge and definetely is worthy doing!!!!!

But it's up to you, if see it pointless, then just stop taking it. We'll enter your Apprentice Rank in the Member List.

Put me up for an Expert testing. ;) I may not pass, as I haven't really bothered with all the Letters of JRRT, if it requires the knowledge of them all, then I'll just forget the test altogether! Perhaps a list of the knowledge required (criteria) would indeed be of use.

You don't have to be in a list to take it. If you pass it,however, your mark will be written down in the Member List Thread.

For Expert you need a wide knowledge on HOME and the Letters. Of course, before the Expert level you have to pass the other tests, otherwise you don't have access.;)

I am truly sorry for this inconvenience!
I have talked to the software developer - Beorn about it and he said that with all the changes in TTF we shall have to wait a bit more for the Quiz to start functioning again. :(

We shall have to show understanding and patience.

Also, I am preparing some changes... some updates of the questions in various levels. I am too waiting to be allowed to the Administration pannel of the Quiz to start working on them.

Patience, my "brother"! ;) :)

Well,Ulairi, you can share your ideas with our two beautiful ladies-Lhun and Findi and they will take care of the Quiz.
I am glad somebody wants to improve the question. As a matter of fact we need to change the questions permanently,in order to make the Quiz more interesting.
Let's first fix the Quiz, and then we can talk about the new questions,I would be glad if I receive a list with possible new questions. :)

Scatha
01-15-2004, 10:08 PM
The number of questions should be drastically improved upon and the questions on the different books be picked at random, so no two tests are similar. This will increase the level of difficulty and prevent the 'cheat factor' of writing down the correct answers. :)

Gil-Galad
01-15-2004, 10:19 PM
Exactly Scatha, there should be more versions of every level.Otherwise we cannot be sure that everybody is completely honest.

Úlairi
01-16-2004, 05:27 AM
Or, we could have the same questions, but create a 'programmed jumbler' in which it rotates the questions in a random fashion for each section. Might be easier than organizing a million different tests, and it would throw a few people off. How do they write down the correct answers anyway? Unless you give it to them!

Gil-Galad
01-16-2004, 08:58 AM
I know what you mean, but I am afraid that it will be difficult to create such a "programmed jumbler".It will depends on Beorn and the software.
As Lhun said the Qiuz will not be working for at least a month,so we can use this time to make new questions, ideas etc.

Now the bad news. Two of the members applied for a membership are not accepted due to lack of activity, Belegmacar and Lotho_Pimple. We all despise denying membership but those two members didn't participate ectively in the Guild's matters, and I feel free to say that they didn't participate at all. This is not the way to become a member of the Guild of Tolkienology. I hope that they'll reconsider and reapply and then be active so that they become a part of our big family. I trully hope so...

Sorry I havent posted much of late, I have been very busy with Maths coursework, but I promise to be spending alot more time here in days to come (especially during my 2 1/2 month summer holiday!). With regard to the test, I believe that the Sr. Journeyman test questions should be made a leetle bit harder, as I nearly passed it first time, a rank which I do not believe I earned, when comparing my knowledge to others who have that rank. With regard to testing, when I used to be a member last year, testing was done based on msn, or another instant messenger service. I know this might make testing difficult for some members, but I think it would be worthwhile considering. Unless I've missed a really big reason for not doing this, in which case I apologise in advance for bringing this up :D

I was looking on the member list, and it appears that I have no rank next to my name, yet others do. I passed the apprentice and Journeyman tests, but no rank is there. Is this because members with ranks had got theirs using other means, like instant messanger tests, or older members of the Guild, whose abilities are more well known?

i know that very few members are hanging around lately, but if anyone of the "fresh tide" wants to check on her/his knowledge of hobbit+lotr+sil can go here (http://www.lordotrings.com/quiz.asp).

having nothing much to do i followed the link from Ulairi's GoT post (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?t=4255), squeezed my tiny brain and... wept (yeah, right;))

went thru 4 initial tests almost unharmed (2 errors  ), but then stopped, cause during the first question of test 5 i made a mistake and that cost me much (game over:p). so i don't think i went far (tho i wasn't using any book or sth like this to help me, just head...whoa :D). after a few tries (guess 4--hard question) i started again test 5 and... survived till the end (tho making a lot of mistakes: they almost caught me on mount doom:p) with a score of 90/111.

not that i'm proud of it (tho why not? if i, personally, don't give credit to myself, who will?;))

those who haven't tried that, go there (recommend)

have fun and gain knowledge (again talking to myself:p)
