Silmarillion RP?

I've been mulling this idea over for a while now - quite an epic project, but one which could be rewarding for all should it ever get off the ground. A few people, myself included have tried to run RP's set in and around Beleriand and yet these tentative stories have usually fallen into shadow. Why? Perhaps because it is so damned hard to create a story that comes close to any of Tolkien's First Age tales.

So I hit on the idea of running an RP in which we actually use Tolkien's stories - what would happen if we actually roleplayed the Silmarillion? How different would our tale turn out?

Of course it would take a lot of work - I'm thinking that we may need about three 'gamesmasters' to see that things run smoothly. But at the moment I'm just testing the water - is anybody actually interested in this project? Let me know what you think...

I just want to say in public that this is, in my opinion, the ultimate RP. I hope that enough people are interested that this can be done.

I have a question though: Why would YayGollum play Feanor when Maedhros could do it without having to get in character. ;)

I have a question: Will multiple characters be allowed? because some characters die early on, some aren't introduced until late....

There are very few characters alive throughout the books.

I'm not this Turgon person, but I doubt that he's actually expecting enough people to get in on this where it'll be possible for everyone to play only one character. I wouldn't mind playing Eol. I should read The Sil. again.

Indeed multiple character would be allowed - a maximum of three, but only one major character each. Fictionals character will be allowed should anybody which to create one, but they must first be vetted by the Gamesmasters, one thing I'm adamant about is that this RP will be run strictly in the Spirit of Tolkien.

I've got a few rules in my mind for making this thing run more smoothly (stolen, it must be said, from another site where they are running a similar RP based upon Luo Guanzhong's 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms')

Certain characters though will be run by the gamesmasters - here I'm thinking of any Valar - Ulmo and Melkor specifically - and possibly Fëanor. I'm not too sure of that yet. Although I'd like to leave the RP open for any changes that we decide to bring to the story - I'm thinking that certain events: Fëanor's death, the Quest for the Silmaril and so on should happen as they do in the book... for the good of the story.

Casting aside for the moment - I'd like to ask if anybody is willing to be a gamesmaster in the RP - three are needed (I can't run this thing on my own - it's just too big) so if anybody thinks they can bring something to the running of the game PM me.

Lastly an advertisement, as Nóm has said this is the ultimate RP, so come on folks - get involved - I'm sure there are many people on the forum, not just the regular RPers who will get a lot out of this project. So if you know of somebody would enjoy this - let them know about it!

Turgon, I have never ever before participated in an RPG and I don't know anything about the rules and all ...
But the subject suggested for this RP is a new and terrific idea and I would like to join.
I would very much apreaciate if someone could give me some valuable instructions...

You're welcome to join Lhun - RP experience is not needed - just a love of Tolkien and the desire to tell a good tale - qualities I'm sure you have an abundance of!

But, as far as I have noticed, there ARE certain rules to observe, so instead of "firing" at you or others with many questions, is there a place I could perhaps read about them?

For example: how can I "book" a character for myself?

You can read the RP manual here (http://www.thetolkienforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2606) Lhun. As for booking characters I'd prefer to wait a few days first to see how many people we get involved. That way everybody will have a shot at getting a good character.

I don't think we need worry about assigning roles like Túrin and Beren just yet - but we'll certainly need some Noldorin Princes, a Thingol and Melian, perhaps even a Beleg and Mablung if some people are interested in developing a bit of early history for them.

I have a question though - where does everybody think we should start this RP? Melkor's release? The destruction of the trees? With Fëanor's death? Any ideas?

I think it would be neat to at least start it as far back as the meeting of Orome and the firstborn.

I don't think it should be started as late as Feanor's death, because I imagine that the Darkening of Valinor and the Flight of the Noldor would be fun.

Actually I did think originally of beginning the RP in Cuiviénen - And yes, to begin with the Death of Fëanor would be to miss out on a lot of great things. My only concern about beginning with the Meeting of Oromë and the Elves is the lack of characters to play and the complication of having to Role-play the birth of so many elven-princelings. My own preference would be to begin just prior to Melkor's release from captivity - that way most of the main characters will have been born and Tirion and Alqualondë built. But I'm willing to go along with the general consensus.

how about starting with the making of the Silmarils? It's been a while since I read the sil and I don't remember if there was anything TOO important that we'd be missing.....aside from...you know....the creation of the world and all that stuff.:rolleyes:

Will this rp be strictly what is in the Silmarillion or will it have the stuff in Unfinished Tales and (*doesn't know if there is anything concerning the sil in HoMe*) in History of MIddle Earth?

I think it best if we take the Published Silmarillion as our authority, after all it is the work most people are familiar with. I have no objection to people using HoME and UT though, as there are many gems tucked away in there. For instance I see no reason why we shouldn't use the description of Gondolin given in BoLT 2, as the city is described beautifully. Just as long as the people who do choose to use ideas from HoME don't take it for granted that everybody is familiar with them.

Why Turgon, I would like to join this RP. I am not sure of which characters I would play... considering Dwarves are not all that important in the Sil. But anywhere there is a Dwarf or Aule... Dain Ironfoot'll be there.

Turgon, what a novel idea! I must say I am amazed at the prospect of what this RP could be(come). I have never taken part in one, but I sure would love to try here. To be part of Silmarillion the beloved! Ahh! :rolleyes: ;)

Starting the RP by the waters of awakening would be perfect, but full of little problematic details, as you have pointed out. So I see the time prior to Melkor's release as appropriate.

Great - you're all more than welcome to join! Anyway it looks like we have a fair number of people interested in this. I have a also have a few other people interested who have not posted on the thread but can be counted on to take part - as well as one or two who I think may join once they notice what we are doing.

So later today I will begin an official discussion thread in which I'll outline my ideas for how this thing with be run - we will deal with the cast list in there - then get ready to being!?!
