A Guild of Elves debate team?

Hmm I have been pondering over this for a while. Should the Guild of Elves do debates? Both inter and intra guild debates (other guilds and in this guild).

Of course the debates in the guild would be of Elves but the inter guild debates would be of any subject.

Nothing has to be decided soon. I think all the debate guilds are currently in an interguild debate so we have time to think about this.

So what do you think? Should we show these nehaws how to debate?;)

But of course since I am in the Guild of Tolkienology I would not be able to participate in the inter guild debates....that may be the case with some other members of the guild. hmm. But tell me what you think!

Funny, I was thinking of asking the Elves whether they planned to field a team for debating just this morning.

Hmmm, this is a tricky situation.
It states somewhere that a member can be in only one of the 4 debating guilds (Periaur, OiE, Tolkienology, Scholars)

Now, if the Elves became a debating team, the rules would extend to them, therefore many of us will have to leave a Guild.
Now I shall not be leaving the Pariaur, so if this eventuates, I would have to regretfully leave this guild.

Good point, both of you. However, as I have not been asked to be on the OiE debate team, I think it would be fine. But I don't know much about this whole thing.

Yes, I don't know if this would work for a lot of us. I want to support my guild, but I like being the Guild Of Tolkienology a lot, which poses a problem. Also, most of the members interested in debates are probably in OiE, or Tolkienology.

Yes, a lot of members are in the other guilds. hmmm. This might cancel out the idea of debates with other guilds....but who is to say we can't hold debates amongst ourselves?

Why are we actually debating if we should make a debating team? We're already doing it now anyways. ;)

If you really want to debate, you should join one of the 4 debating Guilds.
I don't see how it is nessesary for the GoE to have a debating team.

That's true, and also why go to the trouble of making a debate team if there are already four guilds which support debating. Quite a few members in the Guild Of Elves are already in the Guild of Tolkienology. I'm not really sure about Ost-in-Edhil, Periaur, or Scholar's since I don't really know much about those guilds.

So I suppose it is settled. But as I said before, there is no reason why we can't hold debates (probably concerning elves) among ourselves.:)

Wow, I've been gone for a while, and I just found this thread. Anyway I do not think that a debate team would be a very good idea, for: 1. the reasons already mentioned, and 2. We have many people on this guild that have little to no experience with debating. But if anyone wants to have intra-guild debates, you have my permission. But anyway, if anyone really wants to debate and have a team of members on the Guild of Elves, just join Tolkien Debates and let me know and we can start up a team of people on this guild if enough join. Oh and speaking of Tolkien Debates, Anamatar I'll be ready to continue our debate in a couple of days, I just haven't gotten around to re-reading your last few posts and even checking the site since I've returned from break and being sick.;)

I think a debate work would be an excellent guide for the new members. Moreover (since I 'm new to debating ) those who have not got much experience in debating would have the opportunity to perfect it.
It is not said that debates should be similar to those in the other guilds. On the contrary, I think we should try to make them much more interesting and even extravagant. For example, why don't we start a (in-guild) debate related to other writers' characters which are similar to Tolkien's. It would probably be more like a research but it would be something ti start with. Later other topics would be posted (but not ordinary ones even boring ones). We can even start doing lectures and discussions similar to ones in the Guild of Tolkienology.
I hope my ideas would be taken under consideration.

How about: Were the actions of Feanor leading the Noldor back to Middle-earth folly or forseen?

Meaning was it good that Feanor led the Noldor into Middle-earth or not. The center of the team that debated it WAS good would most likely be the outcome and all that. The center of the team that debates it was NOT good would probably look at the losses and the hurts of Beleriand/Middle-earth. Also this team might look at whether or not the Valar would wage war upon Morgoth again.

I'd love to be involved in that debate if possible. I suggested the very same motion in the Guild of Tolkienology a while back but there was already a debate in progress so it never got started. I'd still like to debate the topic th.ough
