Which is your favorite of the tales?
If you can't tell by my name, Smith of Wooton Major. It lets me imagine that I have a chance to go to Faery/Middle Earth.
It would have to be Farmer Giles of Ham.
O' Giles was tough , witty , could think on his feet , handy with his Blunderbuss ... Plus his dog Garm was pretty squared away too.
The tale itself is a fun lighthearted read.
Leaf by Niggle is a great allegory (although Tolkien claimed to hate allegory) for his own creation - Arda. It's about an artist who begins painting a leaf only to find he becomes engrossed with its setting. He keeps adding new pictures to its sides and ends up with a whole forest.
His rendition of the Volsunga Saga is amazing. After that I recently read and loved Roverandom; furthermore, I love Leaf by Niggle a truly unique and abstract story. It is also way different then what I would expect it to be. Yet it is profound, and I too found it highly allegorical. There is a depth and beauty to all his work.
