    Some good points TB, but Merry, and Pippin too, always struck me as commoners, until their rising to the occasion upon the return of the four to the Shire. I didn't get any sense that Merry had any nobility in him, even after his encounter with the Witch King, when he rose to the occasion and made possible Eowyn's slaying of the Witch King.

    I don't think Merry and Pippin are commoners. It's just that there is not as great a separation between the "nobles" and the "commoners" as in other cultures. The Master of Buckland had rule or control over Buckland. He was the highest authority in that region, which I would consider a noble.

    Sadowfax is of the royal blood and king at that.
    On the other hand, Bill the Pony is a common Bree pony. Unless he is prince of ponies in disguise ^_~
