Hoping to boost up enthusiasm and wake spirits, I've come to the idea (not too original, though) to start threads that would implement Tolkien's work into every-day, and not so-every-day life. This has also come as the result to our Guildmistress' plea concerning further life of our Guild. Having to make it more Tolkien based ( ), but still firmly holding onto our tween spirit and original idea, I propose we engage into discussions about life, existential, philosophical questions - but trying to find (at least) some of the answers in Tolkien's work.
Elbereth gave me the idea for thread name, 'cause I mentioned how Gandalf's words "All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us" changed my way of seeing things in life. How? Well...

    ...

Often in life I came up with problems which were not of my doing, problems I couldn't control. Like we all do. Illness of a loved one, bad economy, annoying teachers... And each time I would curse ( ), and do that "God, why me?" ...
And then I came up to Gandalf's words. They honestly changed me. Their power, the power of that moment influenced me. The change didn't come over night, of course. But I was so amazed by those words that I coudn't stop thinking about them... And one day I just decided to act in accordance with them. And slowly my life - my attitude towards it - changed. I stopped whining everytime I run into a problem I couldn't get rid of. I just try to do my best with it.
There are opportunities in life, and there are our chices, things we do with the time given to us. That's my philosophy now.
    What about you?

Is there something you read in Tolkien's work that made you think more about it?
Come on, guys! If you have something to say, just do! :)

    This means I think that:
1.All you need it worry about it the present.
    2.Live life to the fullest.
3.Do the best you can during the present time.

    and just what it says
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us"

What are you gong to do right now?

Actually I bet you could go very deep into this comment but I am deciding not to do that right now. :p

I don't know if I got it right but I love that line.

I try to apply this in my everyday life I really have not mastered it yet.

This phrase I chose to be my signature and yet after reading your entry I have to say they haven't had that kind of impact on me. Well, not yet anyway, but in general I've come to realize it's no use to spend your time complaining about everything but instead just move on and think the next thing you can possibly do if this one doesn't work. And despite of that realization, I do complain sometimes.
Maybe the best thing is to learn how to continue and forget the past, even though you feel like complaining about something. Yet sometimes it's good to let some steam out that you won't completely flip some day...:)
It's good to focus on keeping in mind what really are the most important things in life. And be content with less...like in the books deciding that you don't want to take the Ring and it's power to make yourself the evil ruler of the world.
This present society forces people compete too much with each other and that makes many people blind to the good things they have. Comparison and competition are the curse of our day.

Perhaps the Hobbits of the Shire had it right...

Having a full stomach, a warm, safe bed, and a good mug of beer with friends and family is what makes the time we have so great. And when they come across a bump in the road...they just deal with the problem and move on.

Not like Elves, who have to delve into the problem and try to understand it inside and out....or Dwarves who hold grudges....or men and orcs who have to go to war about it. Hobbits try to take things in stride...and not let the outside world get to them. We could learn alot from our furry footed friends. ;)

"The Road goes ever on and on
Out the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone.
Let others follow it who can!
    Let them journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet."

Yes, it seems our lives have been too complicated, just like Ireth said. Sometimes slowing down and taking things simply can solve any problem. And sometimes I feel a simplier life could be a happier one...

Well, although the simple life of Hobbits is most ideal...it is certainly not very practical for many of us.

What race of Middle earth most closely parallels your own life.

For me....lately I have been all about work...production...getting my product out there to the masses. I think that may be closer to dwarves...but my pursuit of wisdom is close to an elvish quality...so maybe I am a combo of both.

This rises the question: Is simpler life better? Is it really ideal? Do we satisfy with lesser things, lesser knowlege, less "brainwork"? To me, even though the Hobbits seem ever happy with their simple existance, they are much unaware of the world around them. During the War of the Ring, they didn't even realise there was a war! And that just rises yet another old question: is ignorance really bliss? Would you choose to be ignorant of the troubles around you, and live a calm life, or would you rather be aware of the world around, despite all its troubles and wrongs? To me, the Elves seem of the latter kind; perhaps that's why they seem the wisest and most profound of all races.

Our way of life is sometimes very hard to compare to the lives of Tolkien's races. But somehow we remind me mostly of Dwarves; mass production, usage of natural resources, and when we take a serious look, the same greed for welth that the Elves hated so much about the Dwarves. Elves would say how Dwarves take wealth of nature ant take none back. Just like us; we do not know how to keep the natural balance, and how to restrain the greed that caused ecological desaster.
But on the other hand, we do not simply think of work and wealth; we have arts, crafts, science, and philosophy - which means "love of wisdom"... In that way we're more like Elves. Love for beauty, grace....
And then, there are "dark lords" in this world, too. People who may not wish to qonquer the world, but have some great thirst for power...
And there are people who love and live from the land - more like Hobbits, even Tolkien once mentioned he was more like a Hobbit, enjoying a simple life...
I guess we are a bit of everything...

P.S. Elbereth, this seems like an interesting topic, maybe we should make it a separate thread? We've drifted off the subject here...

Well, we could create a new thread. But that is up to you. I am not sure if we can say that the topic "Is simpler life better" is off topic from the original topic of this thread (boy that's a mouthful)...because having a simple life or not is a decision we have to make in the time we are given. Or perhaps you had another idea for the new thread....do as you wish...I have faith in your decisions.
