    Name that creature

OK, I've been looking all over for the answer to this question. In the Battle at Pelennor Fields, the enemy siege towers roll up. They are pushed by trolls but pulled by errrrr... some other creature. It looks kind of like a rhinocerus with the head of a musk ox. Anybody know or have any idea what this creature is?

Can't say for certain, but it might be a reference to the Kine (oxen I suppose) from Rhun. This is the creature whose horn was used to make Boromir's "horn of Gondor". Here is Denethor's description, from the books:
Verily,’ said Denethor. ‘And in my turn I bore it, and so did each eldest son of our house, far back into the vanished years before the failing of the kings, since Vorondil father of Mardil hunted the wild kine of Araw in the far fields of Rhûn.
Since we saw Easterlings in the Two Towers, it isn't impossible that they would consider these beasts as part of the Easterling's contribution to the war effort. I'll have to look next time to see if the horns on the beast in any way resemble Boromir's horn.
What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve?

    Interesting idea Aragil!

If the wild kine of Araw is truly that large I am doubly impressed by any hunter who could take one on!

But judging by the size of the siege engines and by the images of Boromir that I have when he handles his horn, PJ's beast is much larger creature!

Only from the mind of PJ!
Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.

More likely to be a baby kine- 'Araw' is another name for the Vala Orome. But I do appreciate the humor!

Don't write off PJ yet, Brytta. If I am write then you will have to say "only from the mind of Tolkien and PJ together."

Brilliant Aragil! A great deduction. That's someting that, even though I must have read that phrase several times over the course of reading the books several times, I missed!

I thought that they might be some kind of decendent or break off from an Oliphaunt or a Mumak. I know it sounds a little crazy, but you never know.

    Definitely a Kine of Araw.
