Are there any passages in LOTR that you find irritating?

I'm confused about Sauron's viewpoint concerning the ring. For me, confusion = irritation! ;-) Somewhere in The Fellowship of the Ring, perhaps when Gandalf was speaking to Frodo in The Shadow of the Past or at The Council of Elrond, someone (probably Gandalf) says that Sauron believed the elves...

Are there any passages in LOTR that you find irritating?

I didn't like that either. Boring! I never thought the whole business was really clear. Especially . . what was the significance of the king's lore about men who had come upon an old man who looked like he was dead but wasn't, and he said to them "the way is shut," and then he died.

    ~Tolkien Trivia Game~

Yes, I think the word blench has to refer to Éowyn. Answer to: About what did Rosie disagree with Sam? I think it's about the time it took Sam to speak. That is, to ask her to marry him. She told him he had wasted a year so why wait longer. Something like that. I'd have to look it up in the...

Are there any passages in LOTR that you find irritating?

I think you're right. That's the only conclusion to come to. I'll have to go back and read Aragorn's entry into the Paths of the Dead to understand what you're referring to. Hopefully today! I think you're right. He felt that the pool was evil but didn't know exactly why.

Are there any passages in LOTR that you find irritating?

I love Tolkien's works, especially LOTR and mostly enjoy every word. However, there are a few passages (very few, indeed) that I find irritating. Here's one: The Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two, Chapter IV, A Journey In The Dark. The Company have arrived at the hidden doors of Moria. All...

How did Gollum know that Frodo was a Baggins?

Thanks for the welcome, Merroe! I've read and listened to The Hobbit many times and you're right, Bilbo told Gollum his full name. Still, there's no connection to Frodo in The Hobbit. Yes, the fact that Frodo was wearing the ring and that he had Sting is the only evidence I've found. I think...

That's right! And wow was that fast! I thought the question was rather obscure. Thanks for the welcome, Squint-eyed! "Blench" rings a bell but I have no idea at the moment. No doubt someone will answer before I can. ;-)

How did Gollum know that Frodo was a Baggins?

Hail and well met! I'm brand new to this forum and this is my first post. I've been reading so many postings today - all very interesting and informative. I've read the LOTR many times and have listened to the audiobooks even more and I have yet to understand how Gollum knew that Frodo was a...
