Ideas for a LOTR RPG game

OK so for a long time its been bugging me that no one has managed to create a realistic LOTR rpg that allows you to explore middle earth in great detail (LOTRO does not count). So basically I've been trying to come up with a bunch of ideas for the perfect LOTR RPG, if I had to compare it to another game, i'd say I want it to be similar to Skyrim. I brainstormed some ideas and wrote it down, i'd appreciate feedback on anything I could improve upon or add to the game, In the future I plan to draw weapons, armour and create skill trees and just flesh out the game in my spare time.

  • I want the game to be primarily Single-player, I also wanted to include online co-op, some of my best childhood memories were playing co-op on xbox with my friends on Return of the king/The Two towers, so I wanted to give people that option to do quests and kill orcs with their friends.
  • 1st person and 3rd person views
  • I want the game to be artistically based on the movies, so that landmarks like Helms Deep, Rivendell or Minas Tirith are instantly recognisable.
  • The map will be the entirety of middle-earth.
The player can pick from these races:
  • Elves (Silvan)
  • Men (Dunedain)
  • Dwarves
  • Maia
(I am unsure of whether to include any enemy races)
  • Each race will have unique traits and special abilities that provide variation and accommodate different play-styles. e.g. Silvan Elves have naturally higher Archery, Maia race has naturally higher magic.

  • The player will be able to level up the skills they want, which will unlock unique perks in that skill, which they can then spend their skill points on. e.g. One-handed weapons skill increased > One handed weapons deal 20% more damage, One handed weapon attacks are 10% faster

  • My original idea was to have the game begin at the council of Elrond and the player joins as the 10th member of the fellowship, meaning the main quest would consist of all the events of the fellowship. When the fellowship eventually breaks up, I was planning on splitting the main quest into several sections. so there would be main quests missions for Frodo and Sam as well as Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, you would have to complete main quest missions for all characters in the fellowship in order to progress in the game.
  • Side-missions would obviously be in the game, but I haven't thought of any yet.
  • Rohan/Gondor factions where the player would have to undertake missions for each faction such as:
  • Stealth type infiltration missions to acquire enemy information
  • Defend villages/outposts from enemy attacks
  • Attack enemy outposts

I also brainstormed some ideas about allowing the player to join forces with Sauron and undertake missions for the enemy, since it is a RPG the game should allow the player to play the game in the way they want. I was going to use a scale of corruption, where doing bad deeds in the game will increase your corruption and visa versa. If a high enough level of corruption is reached the player will be able to interact with more enemy NPC'S and undertake 'evil' quests for them. Your level of corruption will dictate how NPC's in the world react to you etc.

Thats essentially the main bulk of the things I have brainstormed, in my notes I have gone into more detail about enemy types/collectables/mounts/armour/weapons/boss battles, which I may share later.

I just wanted some feedback on these ideas and to see If anyone could come up anything better, particularly for the time period in which the game is set. Obviously in my notes I have set the game at the end of the third age during the war for the ring but I am open to other periods of Middle-earth which would make for an interesting RPG.

I want a Middle-Earth game in this fashion. When it comes to exploring, this is my favorite formula, fixed camera angles on pre rendered backgrounds. Travel around, solve puzzles, read documents and talk/flee/fight with many different characters/monsters. I miss this genre.
