The nazgul are the black riders the nine the mortal men doomed to die the ringwraiths. They are not the beasts

The beasts that the Nazgul fly upon are beasts bred in Mordor. Possibly they were corrupted Eagles, or a variation.

I read something very weird in a book about tolkien's works: the author believed that Tolkien had wanted the story to have really taken place on this earth, and that the time when it happened was in between two Ice-ages! The author believed that the Oliphaunts were mammuths and that de winged horses were pterodactyls! (ever seen a pterodactyl in an Ice-age?).
