In the the battle of Hornbug there is a
thunderstorm thata reveals the masses of
orcs approaching the castle.
Gandalf later says he doesn't know what
caused it, only that it was ancient

Was it the ents?huorns? what happened?

It took me a second to understand your question-

The thunderstorm you referred to was Tolkien setting the scene for battle. He used the themes of light and dark to set tones for his scenes. The aproaching storm of war and the thunder as it commences.

The ancients that Gandalf refers to -- In my text it is the "It was not wizardry but a power far older" He is referring to the Ents that created the forest that sprang up around Helms Deep during the night that trapped the orcs from Issengard for Gandald's troops from one side and Theoden from the other to trap and massacre. Hope this helps.
